I'm not advocating that anyone get a hyena as they're wild animals, but I've heard that hyenas are like dogs and like dogs can make good pets. They are intelligent and have a pack mentality which is what makes dogs such good pets.
They can indeed become quite tame and very loving with a human handler. However... these are still *wild animals*. They can never be considered to be entirely reliable. They are to be honored and respected--in the wild or in an appropriate conservation environment.

i read that if you hand raise striped hyenas from birth they are very loving pets. but i dont think id try it with a spotted hyena, they are alot bigger and more aggressive than striped hyenas. just stick with a big dog, lol, they generally wont consume you if you forget to feed them.lol peace:)
It is incredible the strenght they have in their jaws, they can crush bones! There´s a video here in youtube of a couple of lions attacking a hyena and one of them is biting her neck and spite of that she still manages to bite the lion in the lips, but still the lions doesn´t show any pain. And we are talking about jaws that can crush bones. Scary if one of them decided to have a human snack! lol

I just watched a video in which a lion attacks brutally a hyena and breaks her back. You know, this is so sad to watch. :( Anyway, I think this fight among animals is nobler than, for example bullfights in which "humans" fight bulls till death.
if hyenas were as big as lions it would be different, it used to be. yes, staged animal fights and "sports" like bullfighting should be outlawed with harsh penalties. they are a shameful aspect of humanity.
i worked at animal kingdom(: those guys r cool- they chain frozen rabbits in icecubes to the backs of trees so the lions stay outside where visitors can see them, lol

I went there about 2 weeks ago. They have tons of animals! 4 tigers, 3lions, panthers, lynxes, yes this Hyena. If you ever go to the DEW animal kingdom, definitely do the tour, its really a redneck guy that saves animals in the middle of the Maine forest.
Visit Maine and go to Mount Vernon and see how fake Madeena is :) Along with best exotic animal refuge I have ever seen. They are passionate about their animals and their animals respond in a way that you KNOW they are well loved by their keepers.
