  • Greetings out of the Vauban!!!

  • I'm living in the center of Leeuwarden. 3 minutes walk, I get to a supermarket, a club, today I've got waken up by some irritating orchestra, called 'best in the world' practising next door.

  • I couldn't stand that. I need my car to get away and to travel different places.

  • @RandiDied Well you still have access to your car when you want to travel. For daily living this doesn't seem to be a bad idea.

  • I think one day we'll look back on the car-era. At some point, cars will likely be banned from most major cities and even towns like Vauban. I live in Los Angeles, which makes my opinions very controversial to some folks around here, but whatever, deal with it. :) Car-free for 3 years now.

  • Yeah and we all will wash our cloth per hand and make our own clothing, then were back in second WW xD

  • very interesting resident..great job

  • i life in freiburg and such find a amarican girl!

  • We are so deep in the hole we can't even see that we are burning down our own homes.

  • Fantastic video - agree with every word. The world would be a nicer place without cars - and, like it or not, as the fuel runs out and populations grow, this will HAVE TO HAPPEN!

  • ugg! she is the most anoying person on youtube!!!!! i want to strangle her to the point were she does not make her stupid Al Gore inspired videos!

  • Greetings from Freiburg

  • In the US, if you build communities like Vauban, it will attract the small percentage of the population that want to live in a clean, quiet, energy efficient environment, over time as it will become more and more attractive to the general public, I think a more acceptable option would to have a community that has car free zones, but also allow 100% electric vehicles . in some areas, solar panels could generate the "fuel" to go shopping or visit non eco cities.

  • girl in this video is very cute.

  • So you do it just for the emissions, and not because you like the car? Weirdo.

  • Yeah, but you like it for the sweet emissions, right? lol Dude I am totally just messing with you.

  • Well, you know, sarcasm is hard to detect in text over the internet.

  • I love my 1966 427 Cobra. Loud, FAST! sucks down gas and LOTS of emissions

  • There you go!

  • i want her to be on cbs news she is the best

  • im in holland now, and everyone rides bikes here its amazing.

  • I'd follow you on a bicycle anywhere :)

  • It's nice that you live in a city where you can experience the privlege of "vaguely hating cars." Not only would it be implausible in just about the entire state where I live to not own a car, it would most likely be dangerous. Thank you for trying to make people feel guilty about things that they have absolutely no control over. I still agree with you 90% of the time though.

  • Absolutely no control over? You could relocate...

And how is it dangerous not to own a car in your state? I think it's far more dangerous to drive a car than to walk..

  • usless hippies

i bet you would not give up your cars. you wouldnt walk anywhere. global warming is all a lie. go back to watching your elitist controlled media. you will never know the truth. you would not last a day living like an amish

  • You make some big assumptions and broad generalizations about people. Take a hint from your screenname, Knowledge. Living like "an amish" isn't something that happens overnight. The more I live, the more I choose to live simply. It's better for the earth and better for me.

Cars make the world a worse place.. PERIOD! Not only does it dangerous and pollute like a mofo, but it also disconnects people from communities.

  • In my opinion Suck my balls.

If you'r building house and you bring all wood and stuff on bicycle.... Don't think so.

I live in europe and if I order something from america. Hmmm UPS brings it to me on bicycle.

Cars = revolution. Newer cars produce less CO2. Plus thanks to global warming it's hot in Estonia :p

  • You hate cars? Move to Mars, end of story!

  • Fuck that.. Cars doesn't sucks..BUT lobbys around petrol sucks and control the world of energy ! Wrong analyse as everybody does.

  • a world with cars, its like a world withot woman.

  • a world with hot women?!

  • Here in Michigan, Mackinaw Island is actually car free. To get around you need a Bicycle, Go Kart, Skateboard, and Mopeds (not Scooters). During winter you get around by sleighs, snowmobiles, and Icebreakers if you want to go to land.

  • You should focus more on power plants not cars... Where I live... cant go anywhere without a car.

  • k, we need transport - it could be nature friendly though

  • all that global warming is bull.

as to jasong19711, ya it'd be funny to see the ups/fedex guy dying trying to pull all those packages by bike lmao

  • Um yeah... get a motorcycle.

  • Somebody should run that stupid town down with a monster truck.

  • You SUCK!....... gently

  • A better name for the video could be "I hate oil"

On that point I would agree with you. But, some free and independent people rely on cars because they choose to live in rural areas. The farmer needs his car and his tractor. New sources of energy are rapidly becoming more available and people are capitalizing on them. Don't hate cars Res, hate big oil interests and the oligarchies that promote them.

  • Why hate cars?

You could hate the fact that they use petrol engine and not some other type of energy. But cars in general? Come on, don't be one of those stupid green peace people why heard that cars are bad and express other's ideas without thinking. Yes, cars can be used in a bad way just like anything else, and that is no good - we can hate that. But hate them in general is just stupid.

  • Cars do suck. But we're trapped into using them. If you have a job, you gotta get to work. Public transportation is not readily available everywhere.

  • Humans are too stupid to be allowed to drive

  • I bet you are # 1 in the list...

  • I agree totally with you. Cars are douchbags and suck a lot of ass. There is no need for them on this planet, not anymore. We will see this transformation happen during our lifetime. But I don't see USA as a leader in anti-car trend only Europe is able to pull this one off!

  • There are always electric cars so no more dependency on oil.

  • So car owning capitalists are considered enemies? Since you are being told at school that cars are bad then I have a question for you. Do all of your teachers, lunch ladies, and the principal walk to school or do they drive cars? Do you ride on a big evil bus that puts black smoke in the air or do your parents drive you to school. If you walk to school then maybe you should ask your teachers why they don't walk if they really believe that cars are hurting the environment.

  • Typical liberal idealist. Imagine where society would be and the things we would do without if the automobile had never been invented. By the way, volcanoes are putting alot more crap in the air then cars so you should start a coalition to cap them. So is it global warming caused by the greenhouse effect, is it global cooling, or is it a ploy for the liberals to get their hands on our money to fix a problem that doesn't exist? Cars aren't bad unless Ted Kennedy is behind the wheel.

  • Try living in the suburbs where public transportation isn't readily available. Then you can tell us cars suck.

Didn't you recently go to a car show?

  • Who started the hummer thing I would like to see him get in & out of a smart car with his wife LOL Lets see Ted Drive a smart car

  • Yea I'm going to get my "bike cart" to go shopping in a Minnesota winter.

  • limitation to car transportation can work in high density areas like eg. Ruhr Area in Germany, but in the USA it is HARD to imagine that. Also, such ideas highly support collectivism where you are forbidden to behave differently from once and for all decided by someone (let t be the group officials of elected by 35%-50 of t society) set of rules. It can be the ban on cars but also other ideas well known from such collectivist friendly systems like communism, fascism, and the law of Shariah.

  • I only have four words to say too you YOU ARE A LOSER! I hope you don't have any kids to pollute the human gene pool

  • hahahaha

  • But we live and america, we love our cars and have the right to have our cars and pollute as much as we want and ARE 10000000 times better than walking. and carless communities are a thing of the middle ages.

  • Yeah I heard about that town about a month ago. It was one of the top stories in the local paper. Although, the town has a good idea and applaud their willingness to try new things. I still think that cars and trucks are necessary for various reasons, including but not limited to hauling major things across the country to keep our economy going and to allow people to experience different parts of their own countries and to gain a better perspective of different ways of life

  • Some people still love cars, and view them as works of art. Taking them away is like taking a piano away-for some people. It would be nice to clean up our air, but to rid the world of something that has a certain respect for being artistic and romantic is just...wrong. You know, there are artist that actually design cars, they were born artists and most fell in love with the automobile when they were kids, and dreamed of designing them. Take away their canvas for ultra-liberal city girls?

  • i love how there's a car ad right next to this whole semi anti car video. it amused me thoroughly. ^_^

  • You check out Mackinac Island in Michigan. :)

  • americans love their cars. we're too big of a country and too spread out. i live in the burbs and work overnight hrs. there is no public trans that would accommodate me. public trans would be great but i'm not sure it's realistic (money-wise, etc) in certain areas.

  • i love cars

  • Granted, you do need cars in some areas and for different purposes. However, I think theresident's point is that there are many communities that do NOT or WOULD NOT need cars, were they designed and developed wisely. In addition, we can all use cars fewer times than we think - I have a friend who insists on driving from the library to her apartment, two blocks away. So apparently cars also make people LAZY, resident ;-)

  • To the best of my knowledge, NYC is probably the only city where you REALLY don't need a car. Correct me if I'm wrong though. Don't get me wrong, I wish I didn't need my car but most of us do.

  • I have always loved living in New York City because I didn't need a car, but being in florida you sooo need one.

    **Kisses**

  • I think you have a good idea but I don't think riding bicycles everywhere is the answer. What we need is a community in which their are successions of automated transportation lines, like the system of low carbon emitting pods planned for Abu Dhabi public transport in dubai. If you're not aware of it, check it out. But I definitely think futuristic is the way to go, not archaic.

  • Thanks for the vid, Resident. I want to live in an area where cars are not the dominant consideration of the city planners. I enjoy driving a car and find them useful, but I am resentful for having to depend on them when I know that alternatives are available.

  • You are dumb as fuck.

  • C'mon Resident. Live in the real world where people need a car to travel to work etc. Unlike your other video's, this one makes no sense at all.

You drying up in terms of topics to discuss?

  • Great! lets go back to the stone age, where are the Flinstones when you need them?

  • come on the resident. the nearest big grocery store to me is ten miles away and I live in a city of seventy five thounsand. How do you think I'm going to bring ten bags of home. Think before you post a video. ten miles is close compared to some people. The environment will be fine. It has been through a lot worst than us. the worst that will happen is we will die and another speceis will take over. live for today because all we got is today. tomorrow isn't guaruanted.

  • Wow, this is the first time I watched a video of yours and disagreed with you. So maybe we are not a match made in heaven like I thought afterall? LOL!

Seriously though, when I got to 1:45 you did make some sense and I can understand where you're coming from. But for me, I have grown far too dependent on my car to maintain my way of life.

Hey, wanna go for a ride with me? :-)

  • You would hate it here in L.A. then.

  • Btw the "original" Car less community (not including the Amish) is Mackinac Island on lake ontario.....the only cars there are one ambulance, one police unit, and one firetruck. You can ride a bike around it's circumference in about 2 hours. (taking it easy, that is)

It was amazing how quiet is is there. This is coming from a self-admitted motorhead. (I liked it!)

  • a pragmatic approach of simply restoring public transportation would be a good first step. standard oil colluded with the automakers decades ago to buy public transportation systems which they then closed. (they were sued and ordered to pay a nominal fine in antitrust.) of course, a good american will accept that they are the dupe of such subterfuge, but will instantly defend their cars and adamantly refusing to even consider the huge benefits of public transportation.

  • I want to move to your "huge small town" someday...but won't give up my car...just won't use it nearly as much. (i like cars, I like working on them too)

  • This would be a good concept unless you lived in the ghetto and you ran the risk of getting shot every time you got on a city bus.

  • Who wants to watch a bunch of rednecks drive in circles all day?

  • I do hate the aspect of that I need to drive 20 minutes just to get to a public transportation, which defeats the purpose. I do not enjoy this idea of a dependency on a car but I do still need one. I do require to drive to work / doctor's / etc. There should be no extriems

  • wow! i use my car for busniess, sorry you feel that way, but it will not work where i live. i'm still glad i live in the USA, so i can keep my car..

  • Sorry, I'm not a fan of going back to the 19th century. Americans hate public transportation and carpooling, much less WALKING. Hybrid, electric and hydrogen powered cars are the future.

  • no kidding, im not a fan of going back to the 19th century either.

(hybrids are junk from what i've heard... apparantly they are way too complicated, for no good reason.)

  • wow, sucks for them, hope it doesn't rain or snow or anything

  • Not everyone lives in a congested big city with everything you need to sustain life within 2 blocks of your dwelling, and not all of us work in internet show business.

Most Americans live in less congested areas where stores, their workplace, or most every other place they go in a typical day are not within walking or bicycle distance. Also, many people have jobs or businesses that require vehicles, including myself.

I know all about cars and love them. Cars enabled America to be prosperous.

  • you are one hot woman!

  • You're incredibly cute when you talk about how we need to reduce our dependence on cars and fossil fuels. How about doing a Piney Power show with me? I'm sick of being the Lonely Loner, LOL

  • no body walks in L.A.....but me !)

  • Yeah screw cars, I want my Jetsons space ship to fly around.

  • 1 thing you seem to forget this is still a free country and a lot of us love our cars. The key words are you are free to do what you want and I am free to do what I want. Also in a disaster (Katrina) the people who didn't get out didn't own cars. No one will look out for you but yourself. I disagree with you but I still love you. Good job.

  • Was that the new green screen? Very cool. Are you going to have a different background theme every episode? Next week: The Resident reports from the belly of a whale!

Thanks for the info on Vauban. Seems like an interesting project.

  • Luv the backgound...but the content more. :-D

  • i love cars !!! i do own the road !!

  • If I could not own a car, I'd so go for it! But, right now I'm very dependant on it. I want to get a smart car, though, so it at least takes up less space.

  • Don't blame it on the cars. I have to drive 30 minutes to work. If I relay in public transportation it would take me 3 hours. The car let you move faster and work far away from your home without having to move near your job. I think with new clean technologies the cars won't be a problem to the environment, and more and better roads will fix the traffic problem.

  • Why is it important to "work far away from your home?" What is wrong with living near your job? It would seem a lot less stressful living close to your job...wouldn't it gouki230?

  • bikenik, what if your job is driving all over to inspect and appraise houses, like I did for 14 years? Not all jobs entail sitting inside of one building for 8 hours a day, you know?

But, if that is what your job is, then yeah, living a block away would be beneficial, but only people who live in big cities have a shot at being in that situation. Most of America is rural or suburban.

  • Looks like they could use a lawn mower or two. Support NASCAR go out and buy a Dodge,Ford or Chevy the real great AMERICAN sport second only to NFL.

  • NASCAR is not a sport. Driving a car doesn't make you an athlete.

  • While not being a fan of NASCAR myself I can still say that driving a race car is not like a drive in the park. It takes a great deal of physical strength and stamina to hold a car traveling 200 mph on the track for the duration of a typical race. I would argue that NASCAR is a sport for the physical effort involved in wrestling with the car at high speed and for the need for quick reflexes, mental concentration and driving skill.

  • Wrong Baseball and Basketball is much bigger than NASCAR

  • check it out nascar has more fans than baseball and basketball combined. Who wants to watch a bunch of dope heades play baseball??

  • Going to a NASCAR events is like attending a KKK rally. Who wants to see that.

  • hahaha its a great idea, but one problem with the carless city though, what if u injure your leg? how are u gon to walk or bike to the doctor? and for those who are permanantly disabled, are they going to be wheelchair-ing around? but im sure there are essential vehicles like ambulance and firetrucks, right? lol.

  • Awesome, omizm! :)

  • Yes, carts on the backs of bikes will work in North Dakota when it's 60 below zero and there's a 50 mile an hour crosswind and 3 feet of snow.

    Get real.

  • i agree with you that we should use cars less, but what will happen to millions who work in car companies

  • another awesome video... :)

  • Thanks drew!

  • I do agree that we should use cars less. There is no justification for driving to the local shops when you can just walk (walking is a win-win situation).

But I'm an enthusiast and I love cars. Well, the cool ones anyway. Once you hear a Ferrari V12 with six twin-choke Webers fire up you will never look back at anything else.

If Italian cars didn't exist I may be tempted to be cold on cars. But thank the gods that they do exist!

But if a Ferrari doesn't move you, I guess nothing will. :-)

  • Yeah. If electric motors work I'm all for them. We can have our beautiful Italian sports cars without having to polute.

  • I live in Portland, Oregon and I'm proud to not own a car. I take public transit all the time and I hate cars. It's time that we moved away from such a destructive influence on our society like the car.

  • The only cure from oil, is space age molecular transporters... we are on hooked on oil for a while longer.

  • lol we have learn from the japanese and jam packed ourselves into trains during peak hours.

  • this video is out of reality.

  • Yes. They generally are, from me. :)

  • Now.... thats what I'm talking about..... If they give me a job I'm moving there.

  • Very nice topic, Lori. And, your delivery was nice and smooth today. Maybe you have started drinking decaf? What I really mean is, Wow! You delivered the message, I was eager for each thought as they flowed gently off your tongue. I wasn't beaten up by any yelling or harsh background traffic. Very good topic and delivery. ( I like the street interviews, too. This was a good change, though.)

  • Thanks, vodka neat. :) I do a lot of vlogs, but it's been a while. Keep tuning in, there will be more!

  • Errr exsqueeze me if I'm wrong, but by definition a car doesn't need to run with a fossil fuel engine. That's just the defacto standard at the moment.

  • After spening 5 weeks in East Berlin, where most people still walk, bike and take trains, I'm surprised to find that one town in West Berliners shunned cars and patted themselves on the back for it.

  • Hopefully they still allow delivery vans into the neighbourhood for those items which cannot be reasonably transported by bike.

  • Did you ever try to bring a book shelf home from IKEA on the back of a bike?? There are other ways to fuel/propel vehicles besides gasoline. I think these people are in the extreme.

  • good message... sucky background. You should stick to the brick wall

  • Yeah, agreed.

Rez, I've told you before that the brick wall background is absolutely awesome and we all love it - why you keep messing with a solid formula?

The brick wall works. It works well.

It's non-distracting. Everyone can relate. It's "honest" and "unvarnished" - like the truth you endeavour to bring. It works on so many levels and it genuinely looks cool.

You've got the "formula" just right already - stop messing with it!

  • I live in Pa. and I have 3 kids. What am I supposed to do in the winter time?

I hate when people try forcing their own views on others.

We choose to have one car, my husband lives close to work and bikes it. We plan our trips so that we only run shopping errands once a week. We choose not to own a gas guzzler despite the luxury that a minivan or etc would bring us and our 3 kids.

  • However, I do want to drive to the library, go to the park and do other things that aren't very close by and would be terrible to bike all of us to.

  • It's not smart planning, it's marxism. Personal transportation is great for the economy and great for personal freedom. We should look to improvements in cleaner, quieter personal transportation rather than trying to outlaw it altogether.

Yet another sophomoric video from the resident. 1 star.

  • No one forces these people to live car-free. Since it is their choice, there is little resemblance to a dictatorship of any kind.

  • How is billions in government subsidies going to roads and highways economical? London recently started charging car drivers fees to enter the city center, yet they've been doing great. As Lori would know, New York also considered the idea last year. Cities need to stay competitive, this is why even cities in the Sunbelt such as Vegas, Charlotte Dallas and Phoenix are building light-rail. And no, the mayors of those cities are not communists.

  • I am a mechanic, I love cars. You are somewhat delusional if you believe people aren't going to want to drive around in cars.

  • I hate cars, but I live in Phoenix (the epitome of urban sprawl). It kinda sucks.

  • la amo.... le pasaria la lengua por todos lados.

    =P~

  • I am sorry to say it,, but to believe in a world without cars is just plain naive

  • What a leap in fallacious reasoning. People who drive cars just live in "poorly planned cities". Like NYC is some kind of utopian paradise.

  • It's one of the most impersonal and mechanized places on Earth. People are shuffled around like cattle. No one person really matters to the community, and the city itself is designed the way it is because the mere existence of people in its vicinity is a burden.

  • I'm 21 now and I still walk on my feet! woohoo! I don't like cars. I like buses, I like trains.

  • OK - Good idea, but did you ever consider the inclement weather?!

Several inches of Snow and ice on the ground?! An absolute nightmare to ride thru on a bike!

Constant falling - I've tried it myself and said, "WTF am I doing?!"

Get me a four-door pickup with some tire-chain and a shovel hooked to the front and you're good to go!

  • don't hate the car, hate the gas. the problem is NOT our dependence on cars, but our dependence on gas. if we can just find something else to power these cars we will do just fine.

  • Great video. While I don't agree with eliminating all cars, better city planning would be able to eliminate a lot of the problems we face today.

  • Ahhh yes the company town. America tried that a hundred years ago and found that the employers became oppressive and exploitative.

  • they do!

  • We need to make cars more efficient and environmentally sound...not eliminate them.

You've taken some clear stances, and I applaud you for your convictions...but this anti-car stance is just about the craziest yet.

But there's too many variables to debate on this forum, some already mentioned in other comments like weather, emergency situations, etc.

100 years from now, cars will be completely clean and efficient...we just happen to live in the era before that.

  • Great idea! I can't drive anyway. Getting around in a bike is not only environmental, but economical as well.

Btw, did you get sucked into your computer or is that your new superhero hideout?

  • MY CAR DOESNT SUCK!!! :"( I hate the train... It sucks. Its dirty, unsafe at night, and a hassel ESPECIALLY going into brooklyn. Why would i wait 2 hrs for a train to get home at night cause the mta sucks. WHEN! I can hop in my lexus and drive home :)

  • Looks like someone got a new green screen...

Anyways I couldn't agree more. As an owner of a car, I'm fed up with paying insurance, maintenance, etc.. That, and I need to do some walking myself. It's no surprise that a recent study found pedestrian friendly Seattle to be the most fit city in America while autocentric and sprawly Houston was the fattest. I guess it's no wonder Europeans with their well planned cities live better and longer than us.

  • How about a horse & buggy community, too. Why not a skateboard one, also!

Seriously, if gas prices keep going up again and stay there you will see the Main Streets of America thriving again and the Walmarts and mega-malls struggling.

  • Cool!

  • 80 yrs old gonna walk or bike 3 miles woman get real

  • anti-car!

  • Comment removed

  • cars don't, you suck

  • when I lived in downtown San Diego I didn't own a car I walked everywhere and took the trolley...sometimes I used my bicycle..but ever since I bought a house in the suburbs, I have to have a car to drive around and I must say it has raised cost of living I am paying for gas, car payment, insurance, maintenance and repair, and who knows perhaps for medical too since I am walking less.

  • I like this idea. Maybe a community could be made int he US that caters to this need. where people choose to live there

  • hating cars is a luxury it's not that most of America is planned poorly it's just the low population density that makes public transportation less of an option.

  • the automobile is my only option. I work forty-five mins from my job. not my fault. no way i'm ridin' a freakin bike and PT is non-existent.

  • Way to go girl !!! :D

  • folks, there will never be a time without cars. the only thing that will and should change, are the engines!!

  • Hello,Lori,

yes carless communities will have to be the wave of the future. It is the transition to that goal which raises people's ire. There are many people who have achieved the "American Dream" of owning a home. And,as you pointed out, poor civic planning has put the home distant from the job. Further, food and services are distant, and would require a dependable, efficient mass transit system to bring suburban dwellers to them, with little hassle.

  • dont hate cars, hate the engines which run with pollutive fuel.

  • I don't like the pollution cars make either however, in the years to come cars like the Honda FCX Clarity will become more common. It's cars like this I look forward to because when you live in a cold city/town it the middle of winter and it's forever raining a comfortable warm car with air conditioning radio etc... is a great thing to have. Turning up to work in the morning wet and with hypothermia is something I don't find terribly desirable.

  • Reality Check: Germany is farther north than Maine or Minnesota. It could never work in America...especially not in a hot southern state.

  • Why is there a semi-conscious woman and a baby carriage in the middle of the road at :40? It looks like a hit and run to me. Maybe a bus hit them

  • Hahahaha, could be! Mindless playtime. :)

  • I miss my titanium Raleigh road bike...

  • i dont want the govt tellin me i cant own a car and what i can or cant park on my property. as long as it voluntary and people willingly make the choice i think its a good idea.

  • That's easy for you to say, Lori. You live in a city where cars are practically useless and with lots of other options for getting around. The rest of us need cars!! But maybe smart cars instead of SUVs.

  • Agree. Many people in the world live in suburbs where they need cars to commute to their daily jobs. Unless you have an incredible public transportation systems, we can't get rid of cars. The solution you propose isn't feasible on a large scale, especially in an industrialized country like America. Props for dreaming though.

  • I vote for pedestrian free racing zones in all suburban areas with no restrictions on speed.

The folks could then be housed in a small garage out side of the city limits.

  • After years and years of biking, hiking and (late) public transportation, I can only say one thing.. I love my car! :)
