  • what type of board is this? do they still make them, im so inspired by this video

  • only time tic tacs have ever been the dope

  • One of my favorite skaters from back in the day.Remember this part so well. Now i´m almost 40 y.o...Shit how time flies

  • I GREW UP WATCHIN OLD ASS POWELL AND BONES BRIGADE VHS TAPES EVEN IF THEY HAD DVD SKATE MOVIES. AND RAY BARBEE WAS A BIG INSPIRATION TO ME BACC IN THE DAY ALSO (SOMETIMES I WISH I LIVED THRU THIS ERA OF SKATeBOARDING IT LOOKS FUN AND SICC AS FUCC)

  • this was shot before every idiot and his left handed sister went out and purchased their super charged fish eye lens.

  • Smoothest part ever. Poetry in motion. I don't understand how...

  • i love this old school flat ground

  • Ray Barbee was my hero after this dropped. What a section...so smooth.

  • my best

  • The REAL Definition of "STEEZ" starts from 2:43 and end after the 360 bs ollie north

  • going to see Mr. Barbee and Tommy Guerrero perform tonight on my street for free. STOKED!

  • I'm a longboarder and it just proves that all skating, longboarding, street, bowl, park anything, has no boundries and its all about freestyling, being yourself and being unique.

  • I just picked up a Ray Barbee Powell Peralta reissue with Indy 169s(Bones Hardcore Bushings) :) I love the old school heft of it....It glides through turns like butter.

  • I did no complies for ages too, Ray Barbie had that smoothness we all tried to emulate. It was like you learned a trick then it took even longer to get it dialed in like it was pure expression, absent any hesitation, Ray looked like that in this video. Those were simpler times for skaters.

  • I was shopping one day with my mark gonazales vision, some dude points at it and says "dude! Is that a vision?! Man this is a board! Not like those new boards man, its like theyre made for fucking dancing!" Man I loved his comment, skaters from back then know their shit man.

  • when i first saw this i shitted myself and then skated for ten years every day

  • Long live Ray Barbee and Tommy Guerrero. Heroes.

  • sweetjesus.jpg

    It's so beautiful!

  • skateboarding isn't what it used to be... people that skate like this these days get hated on, it sucks.

  • I met Ray in an airport, he was such a cool guy.

  • @tweeezl dude, I met him when they premiered ban this in london..he stole my cap!..and was a really cool guy, approachable and polite...and if I remember rightly he attempted what at the time was a huge handrail outside the cinema..still love his style - proper flows.

  • @jaytv777 when did they premier ban this in London?

  • @TheUnderdogzX it must have been in 1989 when it was released - but to be honest I couldn't tell you a date (although I seem to remember it being autumn??) our local skate store organised a coach trip (they also did for hocus pocus I seem to remember) so we all piled up to London and checked out slam city before the film..thats all I can remember I'm afraid!

  • 10 people cant no comply

  • this made me realize how everything as a whole sucks now, what happened?

  • this is just blowing my mind oh my goodness.

  • Who the hell disliked this?!

  • this is real skateboarding unlike most kids nowadays who just skate because it's mainstream and they think it's cool, they dont really do it for the love of it they do it because it became popular and they try to fit in when their really just faggots who claim to be skateboarders and it pisses me off.

  • @NoCheeseJustCrackers Kick Ass :) Account Name haha

  • thumbs up if want to know what trick that car blocked

  • thanks to this vid, I went out and learned pressure flip no comply, no comply stail-fish grabs and tre-flip no comply

  • met him at my job at vans yesterday, chill as dude, righteous guitar player, just all around great guy

  • @eggowaffleboy7 ass*

  • no comply ghetto bird???

  • fuckin no comply hardflip to manny.......straight g!

  • man if i could just talk to ray barbee...my life would then be complete

  • im 15 and this is hella cool, watching this months ago made me want to leanr no comply 180's, the 80's seemed cooler in terms of skating since innovation was easier, now a days you gotta do 3 half flips and a 180 switch down a fat stairset to get wows

  • i was 15 yrs old when i first watched this! in 1989!

  • Comment removed

  • idk if theres no soul in it anymore im not mister pro but i enjoy skating and doing it everyday, and skateboarding is not just for watching it doesnt matter who enjoys it around you as long as you like how you skate thats what its all about isnt it?

  • you want and do whatever tricks you want. It's a sport now. It's all about competition, you go to a skatepark, noones smiling laughing and having a good time, everyone sits around and judges everyone elses skating as if its really even possible.....

  • Skateboarding today kindof sucks and its boring as hell to watch. Every skateboarder does the same tricks the same way on the same terrain to the same music wearing the same clothes. You cant tell one from the other as far as style goes. But you can totally tell when it comes to the older skateboarders. Mark Gonzales, Tommy Guerrero, Ray Barbee and Vallely have TOTALLY different styles from each other. That's what makes skateboarding great. You can be whoever you want to be, dress however

  • I agree, skating is obviously not how it used to be especially how trendy it is now and the fashion is horrible, People like Ryan Sheckler and P Rod make me fuckin sick with their Lambos and Jaguars and diamond earrings, give me a break, thats not what skateboarding was about back then, That shit was RAW!

  • i love the style of old school skateboarding, him and Tommy Guerrero are my favorite skaters from that time

  • I challenge any new school skater to use a board like that and still do the tricks that they do now. Beyond that I challenge any skater to skate like this. Smooth, organic, consistent. He makes it look like he's just friggin walking along the street.

  • Ray Barbee is the one who inspired me to keep it up back in the day, although I couldn't even ollie. :( It was really all about having fun skating with my friends, not doing insane moves to show off... Those were the days.

  • Damn he's good, even by new school standards.

  • This guy was my hero. I used my skate for transport, not to be cool. He did both with style. The Frank Sinatra of skateboarding

    Dig it baby.

  • @2:39 is that the gap Rick Howard hits at the beginning of his part in Virtual Reality with the homeless guy?

  • DAMN! he's cool

  • Dislikes?? really? what's not to appreciate, like, respect about your roots? WTF

  • yeahh tic tac

  • @InwardFingerCrew Are you kidding me dude this is real skating the skate industry changed for the worst after the 80's and maybe 90's were over nowadays theirs so many dudes claiming to skate but their not doing it for the love of skateboarding they do it just to look cool fit in and get noticed by girls and thats what pisses me off like don't skate if you don't truly love it.

  • Did he invent the No Comply?

  • @omrlpz I always associate it with him, though I can't say for certain. In my mind, he did.

  • @omrlpz I always associate it with him. Don't know for sure.

  • I REMEMBER THAT WAY OF SKATEBOARDING,THE OLD SCHOOL, SO SIMPLY , SO BEAUTYFUL!

  • STYLE FOR MILES!!!

  • I love this... I always wanted to get the mix on tape. Its "The Cure" when they still rocked.

  • i wanna get a tattoo of the ragdoll/cards graphics

  • Absolutly rad

  • im 11 and just wanted 2 know........ my 17 year old brother says on my varial heels if i only land with one foot and the other foot hits da ground 4 only half a second it doesnt count... is dat true?

  • this is what skating is supposed to be....but todays fuckin fame hungry, obsessed with "who lands what cleaner",have an "outfit" JUST to skate in kids have ruined it beyond repair ....no worries kids just slap on some gangsta wear, some DC's, and look cool standing around in chick pants at your skatepark....us real skaters will keep doin what we're doin

  • ray barbee sick az old school part

  • this guys ragdoll deck is to this day one of the best designs and shapes a skateboard has ever seen.

  • Everything becomes mainstream and dies a little. Cant wait till the next creative , weird, left of centre thing comes along.

  • @benaberry

    Downhill skating?

ITs actually pretty steezy when theyre good at it

  • I met Ray at a boardshop in Long Beach. Turns ouut he's my friends neighbor!

  • Does anyone know what kind of shoes he's wearing in this?

  • @TheGlandsMusic vision street wear but he removed the logos

  • @walmartian Thank you so much

  • Dope!

  • i think this sucks.. hes good but i don't like it

  • what happens now simply is evolution dudes. the kids nowadays do all things like that they start doing the impossible - a trick that allmost nobody standet when i was young...

  • that would be cool if he didnt ever mess up those sidewalk lines. like all that was just crusin through town.

  • This is amazing. It's almost like a dance because of his fluidity (idk if that's even a word). It's certainly more interesting to watch than seeing 12 year old kids doing "nightmaredaydreamdiscohospitalquadruple flips"

  • These old vids are priceless. The technical stuff is impressive but like music, too much tech loses soul. THIS IS SOUL!!

  • I'm not a skateboarder and I don't hang out with skateboarders. I do watch skateboarding videos from time to time though and this is one of the few times where I really felt connected with the skateboarder. He has a style and flow to his skateboarding. Great composition and choice of music as well as editing. Great Job Man!

  • @Jazminflower Good to see a non skater appreciating the art of skateboarding.

  • took me like 2 months of saving lunch money to buy dude's deck when it came out.

  • After watching this we all went out and did "no complies" for ages

  • @chrisandbeck1976

Ray Barbee was the no comply king

  • @chrisandbeck1976 Just my idea!

  • soo sick..in school fur black history month my project is on him...cause he contributes alot..and is awsome

  • Ray was pure smooth style, miss skating so bad when I see these old vids, might build a mini ramp for my boy show him how skating was.

  • man fuck off, don't matter if you skate in bowl, vert, mini ramp, street spots etc

do what you want, have fun, and be free... don't matter wat those stupid jerks r sayin'

  • Very few can flow like Barbee...a true skate legend. WAYYY ahead of his time.

  • 0:45 18st

  • Such effortless creativity and individuality. This guy is truly a part of skateboarding history.

  • Track id???

  • nobody cruises like that. past or present

  • mis tiempos cuando patine en los 90s

  • how these fools got those rocks off the ground is beyond me. i just bought a mike v powell peralta reissue and i can barely ollie it

  • i remember this time, he was really great with no comply tricks!

  • The Music just fits perfectly with Barbee Style . Luv it

  • Best Ban This Part ! Ray Barbee Kick Flips Ass !

  • 3:00

  • his kickflips have such great style

  • This makes you really want to go out and skate. Nice flow.

  • hahaha when everyone got all uptight and sketchy and thuggo, Barbee just got more relaxed, buttery, and smiley. Check out his sick frontside flips in the 411 debut...

oh, and the full helipop varial at 1:16-1:19

  • Barbee is fricking fluid. His 360 no comply's are flawless.

  • Damn I remember back in the day trying to learn all those no-comply trick variations Ray was doing on this vid. with such ease..

  • Fantastic skating.

  • i love his style!

  • This would be the definition of "Graceful" skateboarding!

What he's doing is quite technical, but done with skill & ease

  • aus welchem jahr ist das?

  • i started skating about five years ago and this was way before my, but also i understand that this right here is real skateboarding i mean it's self expression of one's feeling and motions. i'd rather watch this then some dude throw him self down handrails and sets. it's the real skateboarding i think that matters but these days it's all about the steeziest tre's. look man if you got somde bomb ass tre's and switch lazer then shit no disrespect. but my point is so do i but i appriciate this!

  • @thrasher0121 I drink to your comment, that's how skateboarding should be, it goes beyond.... peace

  • One Love

  • 100% style! skating is so gay today, if you dont do a tre in every clip you arent "steezy" enough...

  • Ahhh the memories

  • i love watching skateboarders, and longboarders for that matter, who have that really fluid motion, everything looks so effortless. Makes me want to go out and skate to my hearts content even though I suck. Just magical.

  • Today's society acts like black skateboarders have just arrived, but the truth is that we have been around just as long as white skateboarders. It's only at the turn of the century that we are starting to be recognized for it. Even today I still skate. I'm 26 and I wish these syle of skaters would come back. When skaters were able to just skate for fun and not worry about all the politics of getting sponsored and shit. Much love to the O. G. skaters in the world. I miss days like this.

  • @clwhite1510 dude gtfo of here with your black skaters not being recognized this dude was the man back in the 80s. why does it always have to be about race, cant you see that this type of attitude is what keeps racism alive. quit thinking that the white man always has a synical plan to degrade you because they dont. nowadays race doesnt matter but this shit just keeps it going

  • @emptyhalo23 Did you even read his comment it has nothing to do with "thinking that the white man always has a synical plan to degrade". All he's saying is alot of people THINK that black people are just getting in to skateboarding. His comment had nothing to do with talking about "the white man" as you put it.

  • black rodney mullen nuff said

  • the 10 dislikes -and counting- are all cops/security guard/rent-a-cops, and there sons and daughters.

  • @programer97 As well as Jocks, teachers, preps, and Tight asses

  • @programer97

or gay ass generic skaters today that think its about who can tre the most stairs or whatever they do nowdays

  • @programer97 and racist bastards!

  • @programer97 *their

  • when i first watch this video it like dam how he do that it not what i am use to seeing

  • New School Sketchy is Old Skool Steeze.

  • Comment removed

  • truly the most raw state of the art. what a gentle genius

  • It's not normal, but fu**in' good!

  • Growing up a skater in the 80's, I appreciate this style way more than quadruple heelflips over 20 steps. There's very little soul in today's skating.

  • @TRE1275 some one quadriple heelflipped a 20 step? who? kidding. im 17 years old and i kinda agree with you. when i go to skateparks it seems like everyone looks the same, and do the same tricks. It seems like most skaters have the same style. I wish i could just cruise the streets and bust no-comply like Ray. just saying

  • @TRE1275 One could compare the lack of soul in skateboarding today to the lack of soul in music also. Coincidence? I hope not.

  • @TRE1275 i disagree

  • @TRE1275 hows there little soul in todays skating? its changed. things change, theres still soul in it.

  • @lethalyoshie if you have the fun transition skating but street skating doesnt have soul really i agree with @TRE1275 but the town i live in is all transition skaters and they are all stoked on having fun they dont care street skating doesnt seem the same

  • the no-comply king, bow down .

  • This video part inspired me for years. Barbee's style heavily influenced my own and I still get a thrill watching it today 20 years later.

  • Hypnotizing.

  • Young Barbee! This song sucks. Why couldn't they have just used The Cure's original version of Like Cockatoos?

  • @noisyrag i used to wonder the same thing but it's probably a licensing issue. just like Torture on the tour section

  • you gotta miss the fatground lines

  • beautiful

  • the whole freaking part was filmed in one day

  • @deathbyheroin No, they just made him wear the same clothes whenever they filmed.

  • @deathbyheroin I doubt that. Peralta made them wear always the same clothes while filming.

  • this is the goods

  • what a true pioneer for skating, his style is just so carefree and just it shows the joy of skating

  • I was never a skater. A couple of friends were kind of. In 1990 or 1991 I saw a video of Ray Barbee which might have been this one, and I don't think I've seen anything since that said more to me about why my friends skated.

  • man he did alot of 43 to variations regular, shiftie, shiftie 360, wraparound, backside shiftie.....the good old days just havin fun no switch 540 flips down 20 stairs

  • I remember those kicks with the shell toe and ollie patch,I think it was vision strret wear chuka boots not 100% sure

  • Remember Powell-Peralta came out with boneite which was supposed to make the board alot tougher to break. My buddy had one that broke so we looked at this boneite shit and all it was just a piece of tar paper in between the laminate

  • Thanks for posting - smmmmmmmmmmmmmooooth

That spot - First Interstate Bank - gap to ledge at 2:39 - anyone know where it is, or, was???

  • Its crazy when you look at this video and see how different skating was back then, but even now you see some thing's that have smoothly made a transition into modern day street skating

  • @Ekilla9402 if u look at the h street vids, world industries' rubbish heap, and blind's video days u can see it even more of a street vibe more reminiscent. wen boards first had double kick and a long nose(it seems this shape lasted only from 89-91. after that boards had rounded tails and noses and just got smaller from their)

  • haha, i live right next to this guy

  • @0lethalxinjectionx ...........r u a skater

  • such an effortless looking skater!

  • what that called at 0:18?

  • @ukuleleprodigy Thats called a frontside Rock Walk. A very fluid one at that. Small nose wheelie and shift the backside of the board around 180 and as soon as the back wheels hit the front comes off the ground completing a 360. I used to do these constantly , front side and backside. If you gain enough speend and enough leg pressure you can get the board completely off the ground for a full 360 rotation and continue on.

  • Pure style! Love it. I think I owned two or maybe three versions of this video because I wore it out!

  • if you love music and skateboarding.... slip BB king's "the Thrill is Gone" on while watching this.... it beautiful

  • i loved his style...he was doing it all the time with the barbee-smoothness... what is he doing today?

  • He doesnt get the credit he deserves because of good skaters like matt hensly.

  • this is probably the best skating video ever made by human race. he's dancing on the skateboard, he's not just skating.

  • i saw some people disliked this video

if you did, you have no appreciation for skating

  • Damn what the hell? This dude got magic in his feet that circulate through his board? I can't even explain how sick and fluid his skating is.

  • I KNOW RAY BARBEE BITCHEZ.......LONGBEACH!!!

  • Such Flow Even Back Then!

  • whats first trick??

  • i got his autograph hey u remember me my grandma got ur autograph on a plane

  • the guy who uploaded this isnt ray barbee

  • What era was this? Looks very late 80's

  • what's the trick at 1:14 ? Looks similar to a bigspin but different. with a bigspin the board goes 360 and the body goes 180. His body went 360 though and the board went 540?

  • @freezazoid: It's called a Gazelle Shove-It, 540 Shove-It with the Body doing a 360 body varial - though actually most of the time it's more of a 270 body varial with the board going 450 degrees and then the last 90 degrees as a 90 degree revert on the back truck. It was actually a freestyle move, but Barbee did those a lot back then. You can sometimes see Rodney Mullen do them - even frontside, which is insanely hard imho, but looks even better.

  • @rmns1234 Thanks for the info bro. Modern day skaters are all flip tricks and stairs except for a handful of guys. I'd like to see somebody at the berricks try to do that trick: 1:14 (well a lot of them probably could, first try, but you never see it?!)

  • @freezazoid Nope , that is what we called a 360 Nose shoevit. What he did there was a small nose wheelie then with his back foot kicked the board into a lateral spin. At the exact same time he jumped off the front of the board spinning his body 360. Back in the day there were many versions of this. His is so smooth it almost fools the eye.

  • Back when a part was made in 3 days, not 3 years.

  • he makes one of thje hardest parts of skating i think which is flatland look so simple
