I can hear a difference between the two, but this is not due to much more than synth settings, keyboard velocity curves and A/D conversion. The digital only sounds a little stale due to it not being Amped. If anyone who works with vsts knows, amp emulation is at a advanced level now and you can get the warm analogue sound.
I'm not that inspired by the sounds though, you can create far more interesting sounds with softsynths than old hardware these days. Still nice to hear older synthesis.
It's really cool - but if you listen - the attack of the sound of original OB-8 can't be emulated. If you listen to Arturia Plugins it's all the same. The silkey blowy attack sound always flat on emulations - is a pity but it's a fact. Are you with me?
There is no way that any of you could tell that what he was playing at the beginning was a softsynth if you hadn't seen the midi out cable. You would all have been singing its praises. Sorry, its only when you put them side by side is there a slight brightness and warmth to the real thing but other than that nothing to suggest that my pocket needs to lose several thousands of pounds and a major headache if anything goes wrong with the hardware, not to forget lugging the bastard around.
@maccagrabme This soft synth is actually one of the very few that does analog right. The differences in sound are hardly noticeable at all. Most soft synths I can hear the difference, especially Arturia stuff, but this one is classy.
@maccagrabme This soft synth is great sounding, and in a mix I probably wouldn't be able to tell the difference. On the other hand there are probably some particular settings that will give it away.
For me, the OB-8 is a lovely synth. It's huge,but still lighter than the OBX-A, and the feel of twisting the knobs is way more inspiring than clicking with a mouse and well worth the extra money. Of course something can go wrong..but the soft synth won't last forever either.
OPX is based on the OBX, not OB8. Two very different synths circuit and sound wise. Probably this guy explains that, I don´t know. Anyway, take that plugin, put a simple saw or square waveform on one osc, without filter, and tune it very low... sounds like a sampled waveform, nothing like an analogue osc.
the real one have a boost in the low freq or mabe just more warm.. but if you add EQ + UAD Phatso plugin mabe it will sound just the same.. i will try that!
Using an OB-8 for playng the OP-X... It's pure pornography!! :D
Simply great!

I don't speak Japanese, but I'm convinced that at 2:04 he said something like: "you thought I was playing the real thing, heh? Gotcha!"

@maccagrabme
You are 100% correct.
Its a fine sounding softsynth....and the difference in sound between it and the hardware would not justify the expense.

Is this a joke, or do you have some problems with your ears?

@uHuTNO
Nope my ears are I fine, I used to be a mastering engineer, and I have some analog synths here

@CoolColJ
Ok ... must be a matter of taste then. I personally really like the Oberheim sound although I prefer stuff like Roland MKS80.

damn if i could only play as well as that guy
id rather have that level of skill than that ob8

The VST is very close but it's needless to say that the real thing is a damn hot and sexy synth. No emulation can give you that.
