@mysticalphawolf you don't have to hurt others feeling just because you feel sad that she killed the Brine Shrimp because actually she did not kill them, the Brine Shrimp practically just didn't survive so stop bullying
Look'm up in Wikipedia: Sea-Monkeys is the brand name for brine shrimp – a group of crustaceans that undergo cryptobiosis – often sold in hatching kits as novelty aquarium pets. The animals sold as Sea-Monkeys are an artificial breed known as "Artemia NYOS"formed by hybridising different species of Artemia. They undergo cryptobiosis or anhydrobiosis, a condition of apparent lifelessness which allows them to survive the desiccation of the temporary pools they live in.
After thinking a bit, I should rephrase some things as not to confuse anyone of facts. I don't dispute that Sea Monkeys are marketed as Artemia NYOS as opposed to Artemia Salina. However, I should point out that the original Sea Monkeys (according to the patent) were the salina variety. They than began to play with breeding. The eggs are still brown (look closely.) My point is that the salina species CAN live even in the SAME TANK with NYOS. I've done this several times to increase a colony.
Also, I have done the experiments as well and they have lived. I've placed brine shrimp in the sea monkey tank with success. When you hatch brine shrimp "they way you're supposed to," it's meant for feeding fish, so they are not expected to live long. You have to adjust your formula. Mine for successful brine shrimp in a sea monkey sized tank is:
Just want to clear some things up here. I've worked with Sea Monkeys for over 15 years, and have scientific research under my belt. They ARE brine shrimp. The eggs are not white; they are indeed brown. The packet in the kit contains some additional salt, brine shrimp eggs, and yeast to feed them. Look more closely into the packet. You will see the brown eggs. You can also go online and read the original patent for Sea Monkeys (where they must list ingredients) and you will see the same. Thanks!
Actually, "sea monkeys" are an unnaturally produced hybridized form of brine shrimp. They are similar to Artemia salina (common brine shrimp) but have been bred by humans to develop in a completely artificial environment (yeast, borax, soda), so they can't be raised in the same water. They can't actually live in the sea, but are meant to live in inland salt lakes. The good thing is because of their unnatural husbandry needs, they can't survive in the wild and out-compete native shrimps.
I love how you say sea monkeys are not brine shrimp, just a "form of brine shrimp". Thats like saying a chihuahua is not a dog, just a "form of a dog".
Just to clarify a little on my last pouch, here are the contents of each of the first two pouches in any sea monkey kit: The first pouch, the one labeled Water Purifier, contains marine salt and a few sea monkey eggs. The second pouch, the one labeled Instant Life Eggs, contains a mix of sea monkey eggs, yeast, borax, soda, salt, and sometimes a dye. The reason why the eggs appear white is because they are hidden among the other ingredients. They are in fact a pale beige-pink color. Just an FYI.
Arent they just a hybrid of bryne shrimp that have been altered to live long and die in unpurified water as to not contaminate the enviroment with genetically modified animals?
Arent they just a hybrid of bryne shrimp that have been altered to live long and die in unpurified water as to not contminate the enviroment with genetically modified animals?
what do you mean exactly ??? i bought brine shrimp eggs off ebay to hatch for my dwarf puffer babies ... and i also bought all my sea monkeys from ebay as well :O)
@cheryl4967 Hay i have a Q,how long does it take for the sea monkeys to hatch cause i have never had them before and i was wondering if they hatch like in 5 minutes or like days?
you would have order more food from transcience ... i am unable to post an web address with this reply but i will email you the web address ... you have to live in the united states to order from transcience and if you do not live in the united states you would have to buy the sea monkey replacement kit which has more purifier, eggs and food ...
The term "Sea-Monkey" is just an attractive catch name for kids. The SM brand has made good money with clever marketing. Good on them for that.
However, the "white eggs" are simply decapsulated brine shrimp eggs. Hence when they hatch there are no egg casings. It's actually a standard method of growing brine shrimp in many professional hatcheries.
Both are hatched and raised using exactly the same methodology. The demise of either is the same also.
i have here with me some brine shrimp and seamonkeys, i have siphoned some brine shrimp and put them in the seamonkeys tank, theyre all living, none has died and the jar of brine shrimp is full of dead bodies.... i think its the seamonkeys water thats keeping them alive. but well see in a weeks time if they both will look the same.
@cheryl4967 will do! its been 4 days and they are doing great. more eggs are hatching too. the brine shrimp hatcheries dont last longer than a couple days. im feeding newly hatched ones to my gourami frys. this is really stressing me out too! since i keep having to make new batches everytime. i am baffled about the seamonkeys living in the small tank they are in! i cant wait until they are fully grown. but like i said it is a mixture of brine shrimp for hatching and seamonkeys from the packet.
@cheryl4967 hi cheryl i just want to update you. i have moved the seamonkeys in a 3quart betta tank. i ddint have a hydrometer so i had to gauge the salt by taste! the formula i had ended up with is one heaping teaspoon per quart. i have also started a brine shrimp batch that is lasting me longer by same amt of salt. theyve been okay for the past 4 days, this is when i notice something. the brine shrimp does not grow as fast as the seamonkeys. i think youre right, theyre not the same :)
@cheryl4967 i also plan to get a hydrometer to test the new batch of seamonkeys i just made last night, and finally crack their secret formula. i cant find it online where someone has done this. i dont know when i would be able to test it, but if you have the means to do so, lets compare notes!
