Flip Ultra HD VS Canon HV30

I have a Vixia and I actually think the Flip footage looks better full screen 720p than the Vixia. Wish the Flip had an external mic input. A 30 dollar lavaliere I have would really improve it. I did recommend the Flip to a friend based on this video, he's looking for a camera and is not as picky about audio as I am.

I am shopping for the 3rd Generation HD Ultra Flip and this video on presumably a 2nd generation Flip is pretty convincing of the quality of this inexpensive camera. The split screen at 3:10 seems to be mislabeled as the upper left video is actually the Flip. At HD 720p youtube resolution on my laptop I can see some slight jerkiness when the commentator runs with the dog compared to smoother action on the HV30 video. At lower resolutions it's not so obvious on my laptop. Nice video to compare!

On the Canon the sky was over-exposed too in addition (in this particular video) the picture was less sharp (could just be a focus issue if the guy used manual focus) than the flip video.

Personally I think for the average camera user, the flip is the better buy.

Also people STOP COMPLAINING ABOUT IMAGE STABILIZATION. It is a HD video camera. TV and Movie Studios use tripods and expensive equipment to get their stable shots. If you don't hold the camera still it will be shaky! Get a monopod.

The Flip looks great but these two cameras don't really compare. I think the people saying the Flip looks sharper are confusing contrast with sharpness. Less native contrast means the Canon can gather more information. You can add as much contrast as you want in post but you can't add information that isn't there.

most people that comment the video have no clue what their talking about. the canon obviously wasnt rendered properly and the settings werent for outdoors, like icenrye stated in one of his comments. the flip also uses digital zoom which lowers the quality, nothing to do with focusing. the canon is obviously better and if the guy who made the video color corrected with the canon, like he did with the flip, you would see how amazing the canons quality really is.

Thats weird. The Flip looked better the entire video up until 3:09 through 3:15 when the Canon looked better. It's almost as though you got the labels mixed up? The Canon looked washed out, the Flip looked clear and sharp. Canon was obviously wider view but that's embarrassing that a cheap Flip Ultra camera would perform so well against a very expensive Canon.

anyone who knows anything would know that the Canon HV30 creates tremendously better images. First of all, it has MANUAL CONTROLS. Meaning you can set every single individual aspect of the video to tweak it to your needs IN THE CAMERA.

If you can manually adjust sharpness, brightness, contrast, saturation, shutter speed(controls motion blur), aperture(controls background blur), and use shutter and aperture together in overally exposure controls.

Btw less contrast video has more dynamic range.

that's not an image stabilizing problem, it's a rolling shutter problem. I always have my image stabilization on the hv30 turned off, and the result isn't like Jello like the flip.

The difference is contrast. It looks like he contrasted the flips video a little bit. Believe me. You get what you pay for. A seven dollar warming filter on the Canon would get rid of the grayish look and you could see the pure 1080p quality the flip couldn't dream of. Of coarse, the canon is ALOT more expensive but in turn more customizable. The flips are EXTREMELY convenient though! We use them at my school to film the news and weather in the morning.

I have an HV20 (pretty much identical to HV30), and it produces a lot sharper image than what we see here. So I believe there was something wrong with the settings in the HV30 (focus, sharpness, the format that was used, compression maybe?)

Nevertheless I think Flip does a great job for the money, and I might buy one myself to play around with (maybe someone will buy 15 of those and make some matrix-fx with them :D )
