How is this a bad clip of NSU? I like both recordings. Jackson State gives me a little bit more of everything. NSU's is no slouch at all, unfortunately in comparison to Jackson's trumpets they (NSU) don't have the presence that Jackson does.
waaay too many hangovers from those screamers from JSU... but the rest was clean. just wish i could get more from the Mellos.. and it sounded like JSU was in a studio and NSU was outside... NSU's mellos were giving a little too much on the lower end and trumpets got overshadowed when they had the melody... i'd give this to NSU tho... very clean... very understandable
now anybody in their right mind and really knows about black college bands knows u gotta have some sound coming from your drums.its easy to see and hear jsu blowed them out, clearly!!!! jsu had the best band directors since 1945 if i'm correct and the sound hasn't changed.nobody can touch them with that war and thunder drum section.we have history and it shows...pump up your drum section and we'll talk about it.
this is a great comparison!!!!!! this depends on what you like in a percussion section. personally... i lliked nsu's performance a little better than jsu's... but thats not to say that jsu didnt do a fantastic job. there is really no loser here. they are 2 completely different styles. i will say that jsu has a really funky percussion part. but the ending fanfare from nsu gave them a slight edge. it was different. 1 day will will be treated with a match between these 2 juggernauts of band.
I was ready to say JSU just because I went there, but there versions sound almost identical and both sound Great! I do like JSU percussion sound better. They seemed to have more of a groove, but both sound fantastic!
Common man. This is not a normal outdoor JSU clip. It's sounds like one of the HQ recordings of some of those other tunes I've checked out. JSU sounds great but we have all heard outdoor clips of you guys. And only the HQ tracks of JSU with no video sound that way. So, I guess may statement was inaccurate. What I meant to say is that the clips are not of the same quality in favor of JSU. Both bands sound great as usual regardless.
Very similar. I wonder why. LOL. JSU's trumpets are the truth. Period. But NSU's btones and tbones articulated better. Both were good. To be fair, it's too close to say which one is better.
hmmmmmmmm.....conflicted......I'mma have to say NSU...and i'm really ot even an NSU fan. Only b/c....the JSU part sounds like it came from a HIGH QUALITY CD recording. NSU...to me....sounds JUST AS GOOD....but theirs is from an actuall game...so i'll give them the W. Like the ending alot VERY UNIQUE.....(still love JSU tho)
LMAO at all of you who think NSU version was better than JSU. That ending was diplorable. NSU version gets so thin at 2:27 and the ending damn sure blessed them with an L.
I'm still mad they tried to white out Jackson State on the sheet music and when the band turned the sheet over, you could still see their name. Some of us were salty as hell, but its a good original and exited version.
Paul Adams made a "slight" change to the arrangement for Norfolk, but this is NOT a Paul Adams arrangement. JSU's arrangement was done by Blake Gaines...Paul Adams edited it for NSU.
i wish jus trompbones wudda came out a lil more in tha beggining;; trumpets overpowerin em;; ending was marvelous!
nsu hadda gread balance;; their trombones took over their part like they should have;; tha recording sounds messy but it was still on point;; ending was sick!!!
I like both of these bands, and i plan to attend jsu next year. my thoughts on this comparison was, i think they sound very good, both have good tuba players to balance that massive sound, but i think jsu's trumpets might have been a lil overpowering in the chords. still good trumpets but thats just my opinion.
@trumpetman6530 im a trombone player, but i want to try out on trumpet when i get there. and not next year as in after this summer is over, next year as in after i graduate in 2011.
@saxophone2005: Yes that ending is "different". I cant state that is in a good way lol. This is simply my opinion in which everybody has 1. JSU has add-ons such as fanfares to set the mood for particular songs as well...in which they are amongst marching bands' elite so to call them traditional is hilarious lol. Just strongly believe that nsu's ending takes away from the song which is upbeat. Its suppose to be a groove song. JSU is my fav of the swac & NSU being my fav of the meac
I believe that jsu main issue was cutting off together and being crisp together. they sound good but that was my main issue. i liked nsu more cuz they used more of the actual song and the ended give a chance for the percussion to show off and have fun too. and u kno it is legion when paul adams puts that behold(tritone) trademark in there. so of course i choose legion. and the reason why u may not be able to get find another clip like this is because they like to change the parts alot.
They sound almost similar to me, but yeah that was a bad second clip. Someone wanted to make this comparison easy because it way better clips out there. Trust. GO NSU
hey hey hey... I thought it was a good comparison. I'm not biased to either side. Just posted this video mainly as a comparison of style and execution between two different bands on the same arrangement of a song.
I'm likin' the feedback its getting so far. Thanks yall.
@atl85201 thats there style to end songs in that "epic" way. if you notice they have alot of songs that end in that triumphant feel. its just different. its their STYLE. i admire that they stay true to them. im glad its not that traditional ending. their just doing them. i like it
JSU all the way man..crisp clean perfect..i like NSU but that particular clip was sloppy and the ending could have been kept no matter how you look at it.
Ummm... Can yall please fine tune your sensory apparattus cus CLEARLY JSU killed that song! Besides did u hear that long unnecessary ending, not legion like!!! Don't get me wrong NSU is a good band but come on now let's be SERIOUS!!!
Im so sorry,, but i love jsu to death,, but you have to be more then crazy if you believe that jsu sounded or interpreted that song better then the legion... no shade.. and not being bias... the legion didnt just play at one level.. LOUD....
my middle school band is doing this song! It's so fun to play :D
