The boss scared you with appearance, symbolism, irony, action, and SHOCK. The game looks like the pages of a well-illustrated children's book. Even aptly named Skull Plains weren't creepy. Fun fact: In the Japanese version of the game, there was no Night on Bald Mountain. When ported to the US, they added it just for this boss only, making Chernabog the only boss with his own theme.

From what I hear, the original plan was to make the Chernabog the final boss of Kingdom Hearts and Ansem be defeated at the end of Hallow Bastion. The final level was going to be a long climb up Bald Mountain to defeat the embodiment of darkness itself (said Chernabog.) This didn't work out during development, but they still kept it in as a surprise mid boss.
