You are. The council of "Derry" city calls itself that, the same way Belfast city council could call itself Lagan council or something. In the Royal Charter however, which is the only way a city can actually change its name, it is called Londonderry. Only the Queen can change this.

Because in the 1600's the London guilds basically built the city as it was then, so they put the London in to reflect that, without them the city probably would be a village still or a small town so I think its nice that the city remembers its heritage, it could be worse like, they couldve called it London lol

Anyway, they were in search of a better life so they came here to find it. As I mentioned before, they didnt change it right away, they changed it when the settlement began to develop into an economic centre thanks to the London guilds....the name change was to honour the guilds involvement in this.
