''Despite all our failings, we humans are capable of greatness' - stirs so much of reason and humanity. Gives me hope. Shows me the big picture where I am just a tiny fragment. A small pixel :)
My scientific schooling period failed me. It never seemed to me, in school, to be an amazing experience, devoid of any sense of awe and emotion it was mere facts of nature that were portrayed and how individual systems function, the origin and sense of place in the universe was never conveyed, never illustrated. Yet, watching something like Cosmos: A Personal Voyage can teach you so much more about science then 5 years of science education.
I have a hard time believing that we will leave our solar system. I just don't see it as a possibility for our race. The amount resources required alone... would be astronomical, pardon the pun.
@IlkainwolfIl Not in our life time, most likely not in a few hundred perhaps thousand years. but eventually. Once investors find exploration profitable.
This needs more views on all the parts! Carl Sagan is a brilliant mind that should be exposed to ALL! I ask kids at my school about Carl Sagan and say they have never heard of him. This is disappointing and frustrating. His words and wisdom should be past on, never forgotten, never disperse into the blackened darkness... Peace out Carl!!!!!!! ;)
I so badly want to live in a future where we skip across the stars, and not be stuck on this planet where all we do is argue. No one looks at what mankind can do in the long run, its sad
This video moved me to tears. I am always amazed at the amount of emotion Carl Sagan's words can stir in you. It is a damn shame that we lost this man so early, though we will always remember.
This video moved me to tears. I am always amazed at the amount of emotion Carl Sagan's words can stir in you. It is a damn shame that we lost this man so early, though we will always remember.
What's sad is that when i first watched this i thought it was one of the greatest things I've seen in a long time. But when i showed it to other people they think I'm the idiot.
@StOnion who would be so blissfully oblivious to the existence of other personalities and preferances that you'd find it suprising they think us idiots?(wrongly)
It amazes me that over a million didn't watch the last 7 episodes. For me, it kind of sums up why we haven't ventured further into space. People don't seem to care...
Carl Sagan 's words are some of the most powerful of our time. I can't watch this enough. It reminds me I have a lot to do and see before my time is up!
I watch this series over and over again to be inspired. The total beauty of our Universe has yet to reveal itself, but the beauty that we can see, is absolutely breath taking.
I think the more you study the sciences, the more you can agree in what Sagan said. Our infancy as a species is perilous, and we may never make it out there to the depths of space despite our great potential
I hope to leave this planet soon, I hope to be forgotten soon, I hope, in my perpetual repose no nightmare of my life here will haunt me. I hope, my daughter does not have to endure what I have had to endure and I hope, before I leave this planet, I will be able to forgive you, people who hope, you will never have to meet me and answer my questions. What dreams may come, when I have shuffled off this mortal coil I and billions of others will find out soon. Very soon!
@Thaulopi I hope your daughter will be able to recognize her father's egotistical attempt at separating himself from the universe. Thanks for your hopes to forgive us people. Unfortunately, what you've failed to accept is that you are one of us, not above. You are not separate. You are not beyond this existence and furthermore you in fact are the universe itself. Maybe she will recognize the only truth, that you cannot be sure of anything... Hopefully, this will make her smile.
What makes Sagan so great, at least for me, is his ever optmistic approach to our species and our future. His poetic depictions of a possible bright future where reason and intellect triumphs over fear and bigotry.. but I feel like that its far too optmistic for me to believe in, which saddens me. Nevertheless, people like Sagan are really what gives me some kind of hope about the futurue of humankind and brings me some kind of peace in this insane world.
About the seventh time I'm watching the sagan series all the way through now, and I never tire of it. He's such an inspiration. His voice and words erase any worries, if only for a brief moment, and strengthen my belief in the human race, for a while at the very least.
Such a grand man. If only this planet had more like him...
I rewatch these videos and send them to as many people as possible, because it's always reassuring to hear voices of reason say "We'll be fine, humanity will learn." rather than turning on the news and seeing how, in the short term, we're apparently all destroying ourselves.
@Hyperion7433 As a matter of fact I wouldn't like to see Glenn Beck. But it doesn't matter who's in charge, people are faulted and will mess up. But if you listened to Carl Sagan, even he said it won't be us, but someone much like us.
Wow. This video (along with pretty much anything Carl Sagan has ever done) makes me want to climb up on the roof and start screaming. He did so very much for us all, and there will never be another quite like him. Thank you for sharing this.
Thank you for this! Despite the prevalence of an anti-intellectualism and anti-scientific mindset in the US, I have notice that a good size of my generation (millennials) is starting to wake up. This needs to be aired to as many people as possible. Can't wait for Cosmos: A Space-Time Odyssey
Well, I guess someone believed there is a future for humanity. I, for one, do not. Contrary to the popular belief, people in the stone ages weren't any more savage or primitive than we were. I don't think there is any real reason to think that people in the future would be better than us.
That is what my cynical self thinks, but I wish that Sagan was right.
I really love Carl Sagan. His voice calms and cheers me. He's so free with his knowledge. He's so wondrous, rapturous. I love his joy at explaining things and I love learning things from him. I wish we could all be more like him. I don't know how I got started watching CGP Grey's favorites but I'm glad I did. Every day with Carl is a better day than without!
Nice people, you have Carl Sagan trying to talk peace and equality and you fucking idiots want to argue about religion and atheism. Creation and evolution. Why don't you all just accept each other or just the fuck up and get over it.
@benderbot44 Because it matters. Because ideas eventually determine our actions. And if those ideas are bad, those actions will be as well. Well that and of course lots of biological impulses which cause us to be really zealous about our ideas.
@benderbot44 Because those topics have very much to do with science, and how it will be taught to younger generations. I agree though, with your comment ! ( The swear word was probably unnecessary ;) )
Thank you who ever posted this videos, you have done a great favor thanks and not only to me , but to the thousands or even millions of people who are seeing this right now , you have brought hope again to me , you have brought hapiness , and for that my friend is more valuable than anything you could ever imagined, so thank you a lot and have a MERRY CHRISTMAS.
Ive educated myself to become a chef, not because that is what I mostly wanted, but because that my future looked brighter for me. But now... my craving for space and science is almost unbeareable. I wanted first to become an astronaut, but I realized that I simply want to be a part of our scientific achievements, our development. I want to know what my knowledge can do for space science, perhaps how to eat better? How to make a decent meal in zero gravity? Whatever is is, I want to do my Part.
I cannot emphasize enough how incredibly well done this series is. It gives hope to those who are confined in the everyday ignorance permeated throughout society. It puts life in perspective, and makes your realize that while we still have a lot of work to do, we've come a long way.
I'm sad to say in my debate team at the highschool I attend, we have the topic of the Advancing of Space Programs. Only 3 people agree to advance while the rest laugh at SETI, NASA, the ideas to expand the human race outwards into space. They call it a waste of money and time.
These are the people soon to be the future voters, citizens, and possibly leaders of our world's nations. I wish they could understand the words of Sagan, and realize the ignorance of their words.
@stayawayfromtheshed ive had exactly the same reaction from some ppl ive talked to. These are the same ppl who support having a military, the fact that every nation (except those that do not have a military force eg Costa rica) put a sht load of money into military projects instead of projects that actually benifit humanity and the earth, it is disconcerting. Thats why ive created a petition for my government to abolish the miliatry defence force here in new zealand.
i have had the most depressing one month behind me. kind of better now, not feeling so futureless and lost. come here, hit up Mr Sagan as usual, and have eyes full of tears, as usual, again...
Alot of people view a world based on science and progress as strict and alot of thinking and no feeling, this is so wrong. Sure the math and the very science is important! But whats even more important in physics? The understanding, the understanding of the actual physical picture, seeing the red lines. How do one find those red lines? Its hard, it's what seperates most people from the greatest minds, not their math or information, but something machines will never replicate, creativity.
Beautiful...just beautiful...Thank you sincerely for following your bliss, for giving Carl Sagan's beautiful soul to the world again...He's very much here today still inspiring us to open our hearts, to humbly seek the truth, to appreciate the often overwhelming wonder of life on Earth and beyond, of the Universe within and without... Namaste
@MrPROJECTBLUE Stop the video. Search for what you want, than watch it. The amount of time to do that would have been less than the time it took to post that comment.
over the past few months i have been going through a bit of a tough time, struggling with doing simple day to day tasks and have been kind of depressed. watching this series has been inspiring to me, the words of Carl Sagan have always had a big impact on my mood, and this has helped me get into a mindset where i feel i can overcome the challenges i have been facing and am extremely thankful to have experience this short series. he was truly a remarkable man, both scientist and poet.
Just listen to Carl, this man should and can inspire us all. Just be better humans, for all our failings, like Carl said, we can achieve greatness. How many rivers do we have to cross? Let's go people, his message was deeper than words will ever say. He wants greatness from us, and we really can achieve it. IT TAKES US though, the people, the next SAGANS, the thinkers, the dreamers, us, the ones that think outside the box, we are the ones to really change things. It's time people.
This is full of shit! No man will give up his power! If I am wrong why doesn't USA give up evolution!

It hurts man

@DesolateGrunt
I don't like how many people are against funding this sort of research and development, either.
Most of the arguments I've heard against this have to do with immediate economic benefit.
stayawayfromtheshed 2 months ago
@stayawayfromtheshed ive had exactly the same reaction from some ppl ive talked to. These are the same ppl who support having a military, the fact that every nation (except those that do not have a military force eg Costa rica) put a sht load of money into military projects instead of projects that actually benifit humanity and the earth, it is disconcerting. Thats why ive created a petition for my government to abolish the miliatry defence force here in new zealand.
