did you know the recoil is so hard, it actually slows down the entire plane at maximum thrust? Pilots are told to not fire this gun for more than 5 seconds (don't get me nailed to this number.) or the plane will become unstable. And, the cartridges are so heavy, they have to be collected after firing, if they were thrown out, the plane would also become unstable because it would be to light. It's just sick.

@silvermitriy but - The airframe vibration lead to fatigue cracks in fuel tanks, numerous radio and avionics failures, the necessity of using runways with floodlights for night flights (as the landing lights would often be destroyed), tearing or jamming of the forward landing gear doors (leading to at least 3 crash landings), cracking of the reflector gunsight, an accidental jettisoning of the cockpit canopy and at least one case of the instrument panel falling off in flight.

I was a Crew Chief on this bird...there is always an empty barrel and you can find it by cupping your hands over the muzzle and blowing into it...the empty makes a loud fluggle horn sound. no worries,it wont go off....it sounds crazy I know...but you have to walk on the edge to know were it is.

The saying that the GAU-8 exerts as much force as the A-10's engines and stall them out is a myth, though it is about half of the engines thrust. During initial flight testings it was found that the spent gasses of the gun itself would choke out the engines due to lack of oxygen, which has been fixed since then.

the A-10 is more than capable of holding its own in a modern battlefield. against interceptor aircraft it is capable of carrying AIM-9s & would be deployed with an escort, against SAM's the A-10 would be one of the a/c taking out the SAM sites with its stand of weapons like the AGM-65. it is vulnerable to MANPADS like all low&slow a/c but SOP is to engaged and pull away popping flares mitigating much of the risk from an IR MANPAD. & now the A-10C is capable of even longer standoff engagement.

I once heard an A-10 pilot mention that if they did try that 17-18 second continuous fire they would A) stop the plane in mid-flight and B) melt the gun.

Its just a teory that comes from math. Avenger force is same as one engine on full throtle(or something like that)so if one engine was disabled and other was running on 70-90% theoreticly it would stop or go back if the burst was long enough, but thats just a theory and u never will know if its possible :)

If the force of the gun is the same as that of the engine but in the opposite direction, the resulting force on the plane would be 0.

IE as if it were gliding without using the engines or the gun.

If the engine was providing 90% of the force of the gun, the plane would slow down as much as if the engine was using 10% of its power in reverse.
