  • lovely ... old school jazz new orleans style ... thanx for the upload!

  • Great Song and fantastic Jazz band!

  • There's some pretty good evidence on the doctorjazz Jelly Roll Morton website that suggests Bunk was actually born in 1884.

  • I LOVE ME SOME BUNK JOHNSON !!

  • Are they kidding?

the man in the photo is at least 70 years old. That means he was born in 1869 if he died in 1949.

  • @tscoco07 From 1879 to 1949 is 70 years, and that birth year is what he told people . If, as some say, he was really born in 1889, he would have been just 60 when he died. He may have been worn down by hard life. Things were rough for blacks coming out of slavery in the south. Life was still very hard as a young field hand, probably did child labor. All his elders would remember slavery, when he was a young man. Even I remember a poor black sharecropper with a mule when I was a child.

  • Unfortunately Ken Colyer was more enthusiastic than skilled on the trumpet.Nevertheless,he did his best!

  • espectacular

  • The way I heard it, Bunk was rescued from obscurity in New Liberia,La., where he was working in the rice fields! They gave him a set of teeth & a horn, and set him out to record. Can you imagine what he must have sounded like years before? That guy from Down Beat magazine, inititated all this jazz revivial in the 60's. I can't rcall his name, Nat Henthoff?

  • muy bueno !!! Espectacular esta histórica grabación !! Gracias !

  • Bunk Johnson, without a doubt, was right up there with Bix & Louis!

  • Is it true that "they" had to buy him teeth and a horn before he could record?

  • Whence came his name "Bank" from too much time in bed or what?ANybody know? But what a trumpeter and JAZZ man!

  • thanks, this is my loving music and jazz idols...

  • Genial, muchas gracias.

  • try to find bunk playing with lu watters' yerba buena jass band. super!!

  • I was and still am of the opinion that Ken Colyer had more enthusiasm than talent. His trumpet playing was,by anyone's standards, pretty ropey! What thinks the others?

  • I think 1879 is more likely his year of birth. Otherwise the difference between him and Bechet would be only eight years. Look at photos of them and Bechet looked "old" already with 45.

  • Not to worry Dadreno my 78 of this tune is in the same state!Bunk had an absolute.y unique style of playing;one could not confuse him with anyone else at any time.A marvellous, inventive musician.Lovely music.

  • ..wir nennen ihn scherzhafterweise "Bunker-Johannes"

  • Thanks man i love this Music^^

  • What a great tune for these artists to wail... So nice. Thanks for sharing.

  • Great!!

    Thanks for posting.

  • I studied with Punch Miller in New Orleans from 1969-71. He was born in Raceland, LA in 1894 and heard Bunk play in Raceland. If Punch was even 10yo then Bunk was a full grown man and his claim of 1879 as a birthdate makes more sense than 1889. I believe Bunk and Punch. The first tune Punch learned from Bunk was "Alexanders Ragtime Band". Not sure when written but the copyright date should give an indication of the year Punch might have heard it.

  • The picture of a white cornet player is the

english Ken Colyer who lived in New Orleans for a while.

    Look him up on YouTube

Actually it is me when I was a lad!

  • @DADRENO In the (short) biographies I've been able to track down, the authors speculate that Bunk tried to make himself sound older so that his career would overlap more with the origins of N.O. jazz and originals such as Buddy Bolden. The theory is interesting. He wouldn't be the only artist who tried it. You really can't tell anything definitive from photos alone. People in that era aged faster.

  • Hey Dad! Who is the White Cornet player in your picture Video ? Thanks

  • Actually it is me when I was a lad!

  • I don't know who the cornet player at 1:06 is, but it's shurly not Ken Colyer. See Colyers face on other films!

  • Hey great vid, I am a real fan of him and his band, also I once had the great pleasure of doing a gig with Alton Purnell.. You know about his Bunk's birth, on his gravestone it says he was born in 1879, whether true or not who knows ?

  • Bunk Johnson trumpet

    George Lewis clarinet

    Jim Robinson trombone

    Alton Purnell piano

    Lawrence Marrero banjo

    Alcide Slow Drag Pavageau bass

  • The great Bunk Johnson!

It doesn't get any better than this.

    THANK YOU!

  • Thanks for the post Dad!! Although I have all the Bunk and Lewis recordings on my computer, it is nice to see this great music on U Tube. Always a great favourite of mine in the late 40's/early 50's (this music still is).Nice to hear the tunes with early pictures of the guys to make up for the lack of video. Waiting to hear another of my favourites, One Sweet Letter. Cheers !!
