I have had quite a few Emersons over the years...and with one exception, all are gone now. I bought a CQC7 in 2001 and carried it faithfully...until the liner lock actually failed. I had a Raven I had to send back to Emerson six times to correct the liner lock (had to stick a screwdriver in it to dislodge it to close the knife)...the PSARK, the Commander, the Blackbird, the CQC8, the Super 7...all had to go back to Emerson at least once for service to the liner locking mechanism. I am not bashi
why pay $200 for a knife like this when you can get a $28 Rat 1 that will always perform better in the field?? And just as good in a tactical role? Or a slightly more expensive Buck CSAR-T? I don't get it. And if Emerson's are so great, why only about a 380 member membership compared to Cases' 20, 000???
Yesterday I read a giant forum thread of people thrashing Emerson for having bad fit/finish, I've never owned one, so I came to the source to see whats up.
While the Emerson knives are expensive, they will last forever. So instead of buying a $10, $15 or even $20 knife every year or two, you can purchase one Emerson and be done with it. I've EDC'd my CQC7 for 13 years, and it still works perfectly.
@albi131 I've heard people worry about the liner lock, but I've never heard of one failing. I trust mine 100% and it's never given me any reason to think it would fail. I've some really bad things to my knife and it just works. I've seen Kershaw blades bend really badly and not go back to normal, but my Emerson just is solid.
Just a shout out to Nutnfancy enjoy your videos, very informative and entertaining.I just bought this knife in a satin finish.I can't stop buying knives and your not helping! Keep posting reviews,(a fan)
Hey man love ur vids. Ur a great resource for knife users. I was wondering if you've ever had the Teflon on any of your Emersons rub or flake off. I'm sure they will if you use them for real work, but I was wondering how well it holds up as opposed to your standard "baked on" finish.
nice knife. emerson knives are great, im a big fan of the cqc7.
got a question tho. iv noticed that u dont have many serrated knives, so why is that? do u not like them? just trying to learn because almost every knife i have carried was partially serrated. so what are your opinions about serrations?
I got a commander few weeks ago because it was about the only freakin emerson I could find. I wasn't crazy about the blade shape myself but let me tell you that I own tons of knives and it is by far the sharpest one I have ever handled. Got a CQC8 today finally got one from blue line gear and I love it. But it is not as sharp as the commander. This is definitely a 10 out of 10 and so is the commander in my opinion. Emerson defines tactical knifes. Once you carry the price won't be a concern.
You initially said primarily slash cutting for self defense and then mention the knife would also be useful with thrust cutting and then say but primarily thrust cutting. Even though this video is rather old I mentioned just so you are aware if you are not.
Good review. Thanks for your honesty and detail. You address some aspects of the knife that I had concerns about but no longer do. Emerson knives are beautiful and practical knives. I EDC a "7" with the "wave feature". I'll be purchasing this one soon.
Got my CQC 8 in the mail today. I am very impressed with the quality of my first and definitely not last Emerson. For some reason I still think I prefer to carry the Spyderco Military as my self defense blade though.
I'm looking into this being my first $100+ knife, but I'm curious, How's the factory edge on an Emerson? Cause if I'm going to pay more then $100 for a knife, i want it to be beyond razor sharp lol

You store knives in a safe? That's exactly the kind of behaviour that encourage regulation.
If I had to unlock a door to prepare food I'd feel caged in my own home. Storing sharps in anything but a sheath or a kitchen knife holder/drawer is insane in my opinion. All that's needed is for the edge to be behind some sort of barrier when not in use, not lock and key.
I don't want to hear "better safe than sorry", caution is OK, but hyper-cautious behaviour is irritating.
@ihaterobbie123 See his knife storage video for clarification. Nutn has literally hundreds of knives, and some are in the safe, some are in storage in rubbermade containers and some are hither and yon in the house. The closest blade he has access to is the one he carries..and he almost always has one on him. As far as your comment goes, Nutn would agree..you can't access it if its locked in a safe. -- Veri (forgot to sign the last one, I'm his sister)
@ihaterobbie123 Trust me, I hear ya. But as a Knife Combat Instructor for the Army, I have to say that alot of the knives that I use personally, are well over 350 dollars. So, as ridiculous as it is to put them in a safe, I can understand the reason for not leaving them around in some drawer or sheath on the counter / miscellaneous drawer
@SeeReason666 Yeah, I didn't take that into account when I made that comment, more of a danger of them being stolen in a burglary than cutting yourself by accident if you're careful.
Also, someone like nutnfancy would have his kitchen drawers chocked full of knives not useful for kitchen work XD
@jakep42zer0 Actually, this has nothing to do with being a know-it-all. I was was only pointing out that storing pointy metal objects in a safe is kind of silly. Veri kindly provided a reason why nutn does it.
Next time don't charge in with assumed superiority.
@ihaterobbie123 Some of the knives he reviews are 6 and 700 hundred dollars and im sure its more of a thing to secure his investment than to be "better safe than sorry ".
Don't you think people have replied to my comment before? I actually found out he keeps it locked away because he has loads of knives and he can't keep them all out.
@ihaterobbie123 do you own guns and have children ? even if you dont have kids, do you keep you pistols and rifles just laying around, stored on the wall? what happens if you get robbed then they have all your guns and your out thousands of dollars. i would imagine he keeps his most expensive and collectible knives in the safe.
Hello, I am Kraid on USN, JD, EDCF, CPF, and BF. I've owned 3 dozen Emersons (approx). Now that I have established that I have a degree of knowledge, let me say that the pivot is intended to be "thumbnail tight" (stop before you hurt yourself). If you tighten it beyond that, the knife will have a hard time opening. Less than that and you'll have blade play. It was designed this way so that military members (such as myself) can adjust it in the field with no need for tools.
@GenKraid Perhaps it is your method to carry your Emersons that way but it's not their ideal tension... Once tightened they wont come loose unless you are doing some serious prying and/or batoning and in that case, you're using the wrong tool. There are bountiful items in the field you can use to tighten it if need be to the CORRECT torque ie no blade shake. Your p38, clips on your warbelt, straps on your pack, another blade, etc...
Interesting how the CQC-8 employs philips and flathead screws. Which raises the question...why do most blades use torx/hex screws when philips and and flathead screwdrivers are so much more common?
"...I won't have to re-train myself in the heat of the battle....." While I appreciate the quality of your review, I suggest you do not lead your audience to believe you are an experienced combatant, unless you truly have experience using knives in combat. Again, I like your review. However, I think you can get your point(s) across w/o alluding to combat experience. I come from a long line of US Marines, and as such, I will grant you the benefit of doubt. Please, don't deceive your audience.
Man, he reminds me of the guys from the knife show on the home shopping channel. Just straight to the point, great explanation and detail. Very good review.
Hey Nutnfancy, how wide is the blade and handle? Because I would like to get a CQC 8, but depending on it's overall size I might opt for the Horseman version.
It's hard to imagine actually having to stab another human being for "tactical" reasons. But I guess a man's gotta do what a man's gotta do when put in such circumstances.
All i know is i mostly deal with Buck, Kershaw, gerber and some more but i never have any problems. i send them knives with broken blades all the time that are from the 70`s and or just been crazy crazy abused and i just get in the mail brand new knives. and on top of it they all have life time sharpening. i send in knives to be factory sharpend and never pay for it. Emerson charges. just shows the companies who care about there customers. and Nutn keep on rockin. ur the king
Cajun Blaze said that his liner was failing too. Too bad, I was looking to get this knife but if the liner fails and the company screws you, then thats a waste of 200$ Emerson is waaaay too much money.
@Randomthingz1: well its not that they have "bad" customer service it just that u have to pay for things that u shouldnt. Look i deal with every company out there and emerson is one of the few to make u pay for these things. and they are the most expensive. they should be happy to fix absolutely any problem that may occur even if its been a year or so. with ZT`s. it does not matter what u do to it. absolutely anything at all and they will just give u a new knife. they tell me any thing at all
But dont get me wrong, they do make a good knife. some people tell me on here that they dissagree and they have great service which may be true but ive not seen it. im just telling my story and they wanted me to pay all of that when it was the liner that failed. that should be an easy one for them. thats on them. but besides that there knives are decent. to me tho they dont touch zt`s and some others out there. but thats just me
i sent a knife in that the liner was failing it wouldnt lock the blade.( obvious defect) they called me and wouldnt send it to me without me sending them like $15 for shipping and also $5 for sharpening. thats crazy. they told me "this knife has been used" i even talked to the owner who was so arrogant and said that they were one of the top companies and all this b.s. and was almost yelling at me. they preach they are tough knives but they cant even warranty them if u break it. just crazy
Im sorry but emerson knives themselves are decent knives but the company sucks. first i think the knives are just a little expensive for what they are. i can find what i think are better knives for most the prices. But they are ok knives. but the customer service is the worst in the industry. if the knife breaks at all and its been used for a little while lke a year or so then they will say its been used too hard. they absolutely wont warenty broken blades they only thing is factory defects.
Veri, tell Nutn that he needs to replace the term "show-stopper" with "deal-breaker". "Show-stopper" means something GOOD. he's using it as something BAD. Love to all the FANCY family and have a great new year.
In SA, TX, a knife that sits low in the pocket is concealed carry, depending on the officer. I like the butt of the knife to protrude so I can grab it, and it is easily visible. The cops down here can be unfair at times; jail is no fun. I use a knife as a tool. I began when I was 5 years old, in Oregon. I have never used a knife as a weapon. Down in Texas, with all the gangs and trouble, a knife is always a weapon, never a tool. As a RN, more into saving than hurting. I wish that counted.
Well, San Antonio is such a knife-unfriendly city anyway. In Fort Worth, I saw a man trying on boots in a store 2 weeks ago with a 5-inch fixed blade knife hanging from his belt. Although this is legal in this area, I still thought it was pretty bold and very cool.
do i understand why some ppl hate liner locks....but a properly made liner lock will never fail u lol....unless u are fighting ironman or soemthing....otherwise i don't see why u can't stab through stuff with it =P
maybe nutnfancy will like the Horseman for it is lighter? however, it has a shorter handle and thats not good fot nutnfancy`s fatty hands i guess! haha! As Always VERY GOOD review.
The CQC-8 still comes how you got yours... They call it a standard V-Grind, but they're referring to the blade grind, not the edge grind.
The edge grind is a chisel grind - ground on one side, then the other side just has the burr knocked off basically.
The Emerson CQC-7 is a true Chisel Grind where only one side of the blade is ground and the other side is completely flat, so it lays flat against a table.
Still a great knife and easily fixed. Love your reviews!
I've had a few issues with this knife straight out of the box. The blade is pretty difficult to flick out, and when flicked out firmly, the liner lock locks up very tightly and is very difficult to disengage. I was wondering if some lubrication is required. Has anyone else experienced these problems?
I've had a similar issue with my CQC-8BT. When i tighten the blade screw the knife is very stiff opening but locks fairly solid. If i loosen up the screw the knife comes open easier but there is more play in the blade movement open-closed so i carry and use the knife screwed just tight enough that the wave feature opens the knife with some effort. it's important for your knife to lock up tight! if you think your knife is not right send it back to emerson, they have a great lifetime warranty.
I asked around on another forum, and apparently this isn't unheard of with Emersons, so what I've done is tighten the blade tension just enough to eliminate the blade play, and just work on breaking the knife in and practicing drawing it out. Thanks for the input.
The stiffness and lockup is exactly how you want them to come. All of my Emersons and Striders are/have been like this. Don't do anything to it until you've opened and closed it a few hundred times or more to break it in.....kind of like a nice 1911.
Don't lube or do anything until it's completely broken in, then correct if there's still a problem.
Check the forums about this and Strider (I know we're talking Emerson) has info on this in their FAQ.
my cqc7 mini had a similar issue with the liner lock being too stiff but after a little use with no adjustments or modifications the problem went away
Most Emersons have a break-in period. If you carry and use it regularly you will find that in two or three weeks it should smooth out quite a bit. Or you could just sit in front of the TV opening and closing it for a couple of hours for a couple nights.
I carry a Glock 20 in 10mm and doubletap brand ammo, I also carry three knives no extra magazines 16 rounds of a round more powerfull than a .45 ACP is enough. However, at seven feet if he knew anything about knives and fighting and your Gaston was holstered you would be the dead one, you can't claer your holster and fire a shot in a half a second. A fatal cut along with follow-up firearm retention cuts would have killed you.
do u guys really feel comfortable carrying a knife over a gun? cuz when push comes to shove, a gun will always win. i carry a glock 30 everyday and when some dumbass tried to steal my wallet and car keys in NY, i pulled my weapon. he caught me in the shoulder but now he's dead, and i got all my credit cards and car. had i been carrying a knife, it could have been much worse, especially since this guy was about 7 feet away
I see alot of people whining about the 154cm instead of s30v or d2. Why? 154cm has worked and proven itself in there aplications time and time again, it sharpens well and holds a good edge, why change what already works. new fancy blade steels come and go.
I'd always prefer 154CM over D2. The difference between 154CM and S30V is minor. I'd say S30V has marginally better edge retention, which is the only thing, I think, that can be objectively said to be 'better' in S30V than 154CM. The two are different though. S30V has a 'rougher' edge more suited to slicing. 154CM has a finer edge more suited to other things. Personally, I like both. However, S30V is more expensive so I'd always expect a discount on 154CM blades vs S30V ones.
If you go to some shady looking sites like yourcornerstore they have it for like $150. I suggest you stay away from those and buy it from a reputable site like gpknives/newgraham/knifeworks. They have it for $170
I finally got a reply from him. He apologized and fixed my problem. It's really annoying having to wait so long, but I don't think he was trying to cheat me. Just don't expect quick service when you order.
I ordered a spyderco UKPK a couple of months ago from them. It came in less than a week which is pretty quick considering I'm stationed in the UK and it had to go through my APO first. I'm waiting for a super commander now. I ordered it on the 25th. That being memorial day, I'll say the 26th. We'll see how it goes this time.
I think Emerson should upgrade the blade steel for their asking prices. 154cm is great, but most other companies offer D2 or S30v when you're paying over $100.
i love all knives and most of them are made by SOG ive had a Mini X-ray Vision for a few months now and its amazing you should review one!! lately ive been gettin in to Emerson knives and im planning to get the Mini CQC-7B another reviewable suggestion! keep up the good work!
Hey Nutn - love your videos. Keep making them. But you have to mention the titainium liner! There's your strength on your liner lock! Otherwise, nice job.
Nice review. I encourage you to look into the CQC10, especially since it peaked your interest while you were skimming through the Emerson site. I find the 10 to wave the easiest of the EKI lineup. I don't want my comments to detract from your thorough and excellent review. Enjoy in good health.
in theory, it would, if you would feel comfortable carrying a fixed blade out in the open where it's easy accessible.. for me, that's strapped to my chest, in a vertical position over my heart, tip up. unfortunately, society doesn't appreciate that too much. through experimentation, I've learned that for me, a blade used for defensive purposes should be clipped to my pocket. the few times a carry a balisong, for use or defense, it's in a sheath over my right hip. hope i helped, kewlolicious
which emerson should i get first the CQC 8, CQC 15 or a commander?

"...I won't have to re-train myself in the heat of the battle....." While I appreciate the quality of your review, I suggest you do not lead your audience to believe you are an experienced combatant, unless you truly have experience using knives in combat. Again, I like your review. However, I think you can get your point(s) across w/o alluding to combat experience. I come from a long line of US Marines, and as such, I will grant you the benefit of doubt. Please, don't deceive your audience.

If you take a frame lock and put a G10 scale on the outside it IS a linerlock. Shouldn't the thickness of the lock be the important part?

All i know is i mostly deal with Buck, Kershaw, gerber and some more but i never have any problems. i send them knives with broken blades all the time that are from the 70`s and or just been crazy crazy abused and i just get in the mail brand new knives. and on top of it they all have life time sharpening. i send in knives to be factory sharpend and never pay for it. Emerson charges. just shows the companies who care about there customers. and Nutn keep on rockin. ur the king
cougarridgeknifeco 1 year ago
Cajun Blaze said that his liner was failing too. Too bad, I was looking to get this knife but if the liner fails and the company screws you, then thats a waste of 200$ Emerson is waaaay too much money.
Randomthingz1 1 year ago
@Randomthingz1
The company doesn't "screw" you though. They have excellent customer service.
ZeroToleranceKnives 1 year ago
@Randomthingz1: well its not that they have "bad" customer service it just that u have to pay for things that u shouldnt. Look i deal with every company out there and emerson is one of the few to make u pay for these things. and they are the most expensive. they should be happy to fix absolutely any problem that may occur even if its been a year or so. with ZT`s. it does not matter what u do to it. absolutely anything at all and they will just give u a new knife. they tell me any thing at all
cougarridgeknifeco 1 year ago
But dont get me wrong, they do make a good knife. some people tell me on here that they dissagree and they have great service which may be true but ive not seen it. im just telling my story and they wanted me to pay all of that when it was the liner that failed. that should be an easy one for them. thats on them. but besides that there knives are decent. to me tho they dont touch zt`s and some others out there. but thats just me
cougarridgeknifeco 1 year ago
i sent a knife in that the liner was failing it wouldnt lock the blade.( obvious defect) they called me and wouldnt send it to me without me sending them like $15 for shipping and also $5 for sharpening. thats crazy. they told me "this knife has been used" i even talked to the owner who was so arrogant and said that they were one of the top companies and all this b.s. and was almost yelling at me. they preach they are tough knives but they cant even warranty them if u break it. just crazy
cougarridgeknifeco 1 year ago
Im sorry but emerson knives themselves are decent knives but the company sucks. first i think the knives are just a little expensive for what they are. i can find what i think are better knives for most the prices. But they are ok knives. but the customer service is the worst in the industry. if the knife breaks at all and its been used for a little while lke a year or so then they will say its been used too hard. they absolutely wont warenty broken blades they only thing is factory defects.

I wish that counted.
iRaptor59 2 years ago
Well, San Antonio is such a knife-unfriendly city anyway. In Fort Worth, I saw a man trying on boots in a store 2 weeks ago with a 5-inch fixed blade knife hanging from his belt. Although this is legal in this area, I still thought it was pretty bold and very cool.

ShadowsRage 2 years ago 6
The CQC-8 still comes how you got yours... They call it a standard V-Grind, but they're referring to the blade grind, not the edge grind.
The edge grind is a chisel grind - ground on one side, then the other side just has the burr knocked off basically.
The Emerson CQC-7 is a true Chisel Grind where only one side of the blade is ground and the other side is completely flat, so it lays flat against a table.
Still a great knife and easily fixed. Love your reviews!

the only down side, in my opinion, of an emerson blade is the PRICE!!!!!!!!
MrCQB 2 years ago 11
I've had a few issues with this knife straight out of the box. The blade is pretty difficult to flick out, and when flicked out firmly, the liner lock locks up very tightly and is very difficult to disengage. I was wondering if some lubrication is required. Has anyone else experienced these problems?
Bohica173 2 years ago
I've had a similar issue with my CQC-8BT. When i tighten the blade screw the knife is very stiff opening but locks fairly solid. If i loosen up the screw the knife comes open easier but there is more play in the blade movement open-closed so i carry and use the knife screwed just tight enough that the wave feature opens the knife with some effort. it's important for your knife to lock up tight! if you think your knife is not right send it back to emerson, they have a great lifetime warranty.
sixteen34 2 years ago
I asked around on another forum, and apparently this isn't unheard of with Emersons, so what I've done is tighten the blade tension just enough to eliminate the blade play, and just work on breaking the knife in and practicing drawing it out. Thanks for the input.
Bohica173 2 years ago
sixteen34 & Bohica173
The stiffness and lockup is exactly how you want them to come. All of my Emersons and Striders are/have been like this. Don't do anything to it until you've opened and closed it a few hundred times or more to break it in.....kind of like a nice 1911.
Don't lube or do anything until it's completely broken in, then correct if there's still a problem.
Check the forums about this and Strider (I know we're talking Emerson) has info on this in their FAQ.

my cqc7 mini had a similar issue with the liner lock being too stiff but after a little use with no adjustments or modifications the problem went away
kevinjb7 2 years ago

I see alot of people whining about the 154cm instead of s30v or d2. Why? 154cm has worked and proven itself in there aplications time and time again, it sharpens well and holds a good edge, why change what already works. new fancy blade steels come and go.
hollowpoint27 2 years ago
I'd always prefer 154CM over D2. The difference between 154CM and S30V is minor. I'd say S30V has marginally better edge retention, which is the only thing, I think, that can be objectively said to be 'better' in S30V than 154CM. The two are different though. S30V has a 'rougher' edge more suited to slicing. 154CM has a finer edge more suited to other things. Personally, I like both. However, S30V is more expensive so I'd always expect a discount on 154CM blades vs S30V ones.

Emersons are overpriced. That's a shame because I kinda like their sober and classy look..
But, liner lock (boooh), 154CM (not even CPM 154CM)... IS it too much to ask for some S30V or D2 for this price?
Well and about this chisel ground..strange idea.
Anyway, If I have some extra money I might consider buying a CQC-8 because I really, really like it's look.

Not being a knife expert, but wouldn't it be faster to deploy in a tactical situation to carry a fixed blade in a sheath system like the Rat rc3?
Appalachiankid 3 years ago
in theory, it would, if you would feel comfortable carrying a fixed blade out in the open where it's easy accessible.. for me, that's strapped to my chest, in a vertical position over my heart, tip up. unfortunately, society doesn't appreciate that too much. through experimentation, I've learned that for me, a blade used for defensive purposes should be clipped to my pocket. the few times a carry a balisong, for use or defense, it's in a sheath over my right hip. hope i helped, kewlolicious
