I'm in a college calculus class and the teacher had to spend 20 minutes on the difference quotient because they don't know advanced algebra. Why is the state of American education so terrible?

Very detailed and clear in all steps. This is how a teacher should teach, not like my teacher when in every steps we ask question and he says " let met see how he has done it" which is he using other teacher's work and just print or project it on the board.

Too many times, instructors "hurry" the process, especially when having to repeat the algebra involved when dealing with the difference quotient.
