They aren't tremendously far apart.
When I lived in Michigan I was hanging out with my good friend Jake and his sister (13/14) and her several friends came in and started talking at great length about that fleshlight sex toy. They WANTED to talk about it and they were younger than us and knew more about it.
Maybe in the '50s this was unheard of, but in more recent years the bar is being lowered for age expectations in young girls.
