I'm reading all these comment about how dirty Nassau is yes the buildings are old but the place in not dirty and full of trash, the people says that have never been here
I just returned from there,WOW what a disappointment. Before 1973 it was under british rule. Now the place is complete mess, Paradice Island is well kept, I cant understand how an island 24 miles long and 7 miles wide could be completely covered in trash. SAD
No place like the Bahamas ..... my beautiful islands. I can see why (sum) of other nationals run here, can t get enough of dat sun sea and sand baby. I love this old clip, enlightment on alot of old beautiful sights back then. I agree they should show these clips and more in our Schools to show our children from where they came from.....love it.
@wA7racer I agree on repairing the old buildings in Nassau (Down Town area). I also agree that we as a people can be more social cohesion but not just in New Providence but the enitre Bahamas, no matter the color, or social status. Dirty, drab & unkept, ????? you need everyone to show pride in there Bahama Land (Bahamians) and ESPECIALLY the foreigners. Some of whom bring there nasty way of life here and live it out, they too help keep this Island they call home DIRTY,DRAB & UNKEPT.
I enjoyed watching most of this clip, but the portion at 19:10 ( with little naked kid ) could have been deleted. But it goes to show how they valued us, i guess
i thought the exact same thing why arent we playing thses type of videos in our schools, i think this would help our youth change their minds about the country and gain a great appreciation for it. this video is flickin amazing to see
My goodness...I live in nassau and i must say that i wish nassau was less populated and crowded like how it was in this documentary...i mean...you cant walk around in the roads today without getting knocked down or cursed at. What happened to the horse and buggies?...What happened to all the beautiful flowers and trees everywhere you go?...Nassau is really too big to be developed the way that it is now...*sigh*...i wish things were how it used to be.
This is an absolutely wonderful video. I want to go to the Bahamas and I live here. Now I understand some of what my mother was saying about things being so much simpler in her time.
This is a wonderful video (despite its inaccuracies). It is such a shame, though, how we have let so much history just vanish. I am thinking particularly about some of our historical buildings that are no more or allowed to fall into ruin, as well as our diminishing numbers of Flamingo's and Bahama Parrots.
We Bahamians need to have a little more pride in our heritage or pretty soon, if we are not careful, we will have nothing more than a few pictures and memories left.
Well if there are inaccuracies, lets get them corrected. Go ahead and do your research, there have been others to bring them out, (as myself). Since this video came out, some errors have been corrected!!
To 'spykeleigh' You must not have watched this video from start to finish. I saw lots of black Bahamians. I agree with 'bahaboy89' there is a HUGE difference between African Americans and black Bahamians and for that matter in the whole of the Caribbean. Everything looked so simple then. I love to listen to stories from older members of my family about growing up in that time. If I only had a time machine..
Isn't it curious that there are no black people in this video when they are the majority of people in the Bahamas. During this time the native people were oppressed, uneducated and hidden away in little "Settlements."
what are you talking about... chill out lil bit and realize this is PAN AM's film, and during the 30's, PAN AM was the only commercial airline. Notice they had money, and also notice this film is directed by rich white americans, not bahamians. dont talk about the black bahamian's being oppressed - you sound like a black person from atlanta who still feels that ALL white people "owe" you something. ALL bahamians are united & VERY different than black americans. there's no segregation in bahamas.
Just to let you know, neither Black people nor White people are natives to the bahamas, all the natives where taken by Columbas and sent to work. You see alot more black people then you do white people, its just not focused on them. but if you actually watched more then the first 2 mins of the vid you would have noticed that the police force is mainly black people who where "Oppressed, Uneducated and Hidden away" as you say... Educate yourself before you try and Educate others
This footage is well put together. It's is amazing how the old days seems more interesting than the present. I don't think the future could compare to what I've seen here. I'm so proud of our country's past. It was more beautiful and inviting than it is today, inspite of its present state of progress and development. Makes me feel like I'm missing the best part of my heritage. Go Bahamas!
Wow!!!!!!ya think Nassau could ever be clean like this again. These straw vendors need to see this video so dey can see what real straw is about. No cars, just plain old horse and carriage and two legs. Oh to be a part of those days.
If the Duke of Windsor was in this footage as the Royal Governor, this is about 65+ years old!!! A lot has changed now, its nothing like this today!!!! Lisbon was the port of departure during WWII to the United States through Bermuda!!!!!!

The difference between Nassau then & today is that it is no longer ORDERLY & CLEAN. Unfortunately it is now, dirty, drab & unkept.
Clean the streets & sidewalks, repair the damaged decaying old buildings, give evrything a coat of paint & see what a difference it makes.
Nassau today has no social cohesion. No-one is doing anything about it. Everybody waiting for someone else to act.
Better do something befors Cuba opens up.

4:11 The Duke of Windsor was Governor of the Bahamas from 1940 to 1945 so is it possible this footage is earlier than the 1950s?

Yes, you are right. I have changed it to 1940's.
