I just got an AC4 with the 8" speaker and I am extremely impressed. The amp alone with nothing but a guitar sounds pretty good. A nice tube tone. I use a Pod X3 Live from line 6. It adds a EQ to the mix and the tube AC4 just adds that special something that only a tube amp can add. Makes the X3 Live sound alot better. I plugged it in to a 4x12 valveking cabinet and it sounds better than the Peavey head that matches. BTW 4 watts is WAY louder than I thought it would be.
Is there enough headroom to truly get sparkling cleans? Which vox amp do you recommend for U2 type stuff? Vox ac15h1tv? Mainly home recording and at home band practice. I want to run 2 in steareo so not sure if 2 ac4 will be loud enough with band. Of course, money is an issue so if 2 ac4s in stereo is plenty loud with sparkling cleans as well then that would be great but not sure about the cleans with such minimal headroom. Please help. Your advice is greatly appreciated.
@vgw1971 check out the posts by u2john316,he plays through an AC4 and does some amazing U2 demos, his demos along with realdocloco's,convinced me to buy the AC4 and I love it.The attenuator is interesting but sucks tone from your sound. For home use it would be great, that's what I use it for.For gigs and chimey cleans, keep saving for an AC15 or AC30.
i got a champ600 and love it, but have been thinking of picking up one of these to get a bit more gain at lower volumes. i tried the head at a store in town but they didn't have the cab so we sent it through a green back which sounded great. not sure if it's youtube or the stock speaker on this, but it definitely doesn't sound as good as that green back...anyone have insight on the different speakers?
i ges i like to play real loud then, but i played the 1x10 of this amp, maybe the speaker was effd cuz it sounded like crap, i have a 1x12 cab n woodnt mind having the head tho
I have this amp. I can play with a full rockband. The 4watts are sufficent. On stage, if I need more power, I ask to the sound engineer to put a mic next to the amp and it's ok.
@marshallstakkk other guys don't know much, you could rehearse with this amp and you could play a gig but in a smaller venue, But if you play a louder/harder genre were your drummer plays hard, you might get lost.
@marshallstakkk yep i own the combo ith the ten inch speaker great for rehearsing and smaller gigs like barrooms n such. elevate it in the air or put into a cab and if need be mic it sound guys looove small/medium sized amps! Pick it up its a sexy amp!!
@marshallstakkk you won't be able to hear this amp over a drummer. it would have to be mic'd if you want to be heard in a live setting with a full band.
This amp is amazing! The first thing to do if you buy this amp is change the tubes. This thing sounds decent with stock tubes but SHINES with better tubes in it!!
yeah i wasnt sure if he meant the cabs or the head. as a matter a fact the AC amp head ARE closed. whcih means they get really hot. ive heard them called easy bake ovens. Tubes do have a really nice saturated charateristic when they are hot. i dont know. also vox cabs, while closed backed, have the vents in the front, under the grill cloth.
Actually upon closer inspection his guitar has mini-humbuckers, not standard sized Gibson humbuckers. Mini-humbuckers are cool. I like them better than real humbuckers.
And that gold sparkle Gretsch with FilterTrons is nice. I think there is a 6120 back there too. He needs to take advantage of that great Gretsch sound.
have you played one yet? It's louder than most people expect for 4 watts, but it really depends on your drummer. I think i could BARELY get away with it. At a gig, if it were mic'ed, it'd be awesome, assuming you got enough in your monitors.
I want to either buy the night train or the ac4. Do both amps sound very similar tone wise? Also, is the ac4 loud enough to...for example, annoy the neighbors if i lived in an apartment. I was wondering if i needed the 15 watts....So is the night train worth it?
VN? Really? are all asian made VOX amps made in VN? because i consider that a plus. chinese and indonesian made stuff, IMO is horrible junk. they have a different culture but the Vietnamese understand American culture, (like Fender in Mexico). they make good stuff.
Yes, great job on the video. Great playing as well dude! i went out an tried out these amps as well, and I ended up leaving the store with the 10" combo. Vox has recently added an 8" Celestion speaker AC4TV model. It has a slight boost in the midrange compared to the 10", but it also does sound great. The 8" is about the same size as the fender champ 600, but sounds much better. Unlike the stack and 10" models, the 8" lowest watt option is 1/10 watt instead of 1/4 watt.
For someone looking to buy their first amp for bedroom/garage use, it's getting harder and harder to walk past one of these babies. Hardest decision is to choose between the combo and the stack. Me thinks the head with a Celestion alnico in a cabinet just to try and get a nice twinkle in the cleans that appears to be the only bogey in the ointment.
Im with you on than. im having a tough time myself. The Vox and the class 5 are top quality 5 watters. and the VJ gets a lot of respect. most proffesional recording studios ive looked into have a VJ on hand.
sorry, epiphone "valve Junior". Personally i think those are also great amps and a still a great value at about 130 bucks. these AC4's are dynamite though/
Could anyone tell me some of the riffs he plays in this review, they sound real familiar? I have this Vox head plus Cab and I love 'em!

@canitovega You'd have to mic it, but even the combo would be enough for a small gig if it was mic'd.

I hate when guys mic the cabinet for a review… you can't hear anything that way.
Good job guys.

What do you think? AC4TVH + cab or AC15VR? Mostly for U2, clean sounds, and sometimes bank rehearsals? HELP!

@deedrz1990 AC4, I've only had bad reviews of the AC15VR for distorsion
