Our school's top choir is going on a trip to Ghana in 2012, mostly around Accra. Do you have any advice as to what kind of things I should learn? Obviously it's a guided trip, but I want to be able to talk with the locals. How different is the English spoken there?
I Think this Video say for anyone that wants to hear or learn the Language this is a very good video to put out there, and I'm glad u have other people that want to learn the language yh Ghana there are alot of Tribes and Languages in Ghana but, I would say the same for many say other African Countries I fink its just really refreshing to hear a little humour in the vid but also so down to Earthness in the Vid so yh seriously if u put dis Vid out my Twi aint all dat gd too but I do appreciate it
sensitive douche: Aburokyiri means "across the sea" or "overseas" in twi. The root word is attached to that of Oburini. Hence, the meaning of oburini is something like, "one from over the sea." Stranger is more accurate that whitey. Take one of those water sachets, clean out your vagina, and stop worrying about the nuances of a language you clearly are unfamiliar with.
I went to GHana in 2009 for 4 months. I loved learning Twi. This brings back so much memory! Now, I started a club in my school to fundraise for WAAF in Ghana, and some of them want to go to Ghana. So I am teaching them everything I know, including TWI. This is a very helpful video for them =) THANK YOU!
Thanks for the Video, I'm Ethnically a Ghanaian born in Britain so I don't speak to well, myself, but I am trying to learn, as I go along, I like what you've done because the context in the way you've shown the Video, is Just what it is, how its like when your other go over there, the whole Brouni thing yeh really isn't something to be taken offence to at all, even if your skins a little lighter than Most, you still can be considered Brouni, lol its not harmful at all, great Vid thumbs UP :)
Thanks for the great comments! We are really happy that this video is useful to some - and causes homesickness for others! This obruni in Ghana is doing his best. I really appreciate all the feedback! PEACE and GOOD HEALTH always!
Thanks very much for this video.. i wish there was more. I was born in ghana & raised elsewhere but knew gha better b4 i came to school in u.s. & even my own parent spoke to me in english. unfortunately & shameful to some i am a ghanian that has lost most of my gha language, sadly i can tell u that i even understand twi more. wierd i know :-(.
Oh I'm sure if you keeping trying to learn, I'm sure one day it will come back you, heck, I'm starting from the beginning too so Hopefully there's hope for me too lol
@Anansi2009: Yeah luckily i understand twi for the basic convos n i know all that is being said when people r conversating.. I just can't speak it. And i'm a Gha, but i dont even speak that 1 either much. infact i even understand the twi more than my gha language.
'Oburoni' Is A Term Most Commonly Used 2 Describe Somebody Not Only White But Somebody From White Man's Land...That's Y even African American Are Often Called 'Oburoni' And Also British Africans...=]
Thanks d00d7....you have illustrated my confusion. You state "Oburoni is used mostly for white people." What else is it used for? I have heard African-Americans called Obruni before. Maybe because they have lighter skin?
obroni is just used for white people ; maybe when you heard it used towards an african american they were making fun of their skin complexion but other than that African Americans are called Akatani(s) like d00d7 said.
what does Akatani mean, and why is used in this, I'm just interested to learn phrases or things that are used, it would be just good, to know so I'm more aware of maybe certain thing thanks for your help.
@Anansi2009 akatani is just another way for saying African American or "black person" (like a NON African/Caribbean person would be called that) for example if you were to be Jamaican you could hear some one call you Jamaica(ni) which translates to "Jamaican person" or something along the lines like that
@SWilson510 you don't have to have light skin.just a foreign accent and most times a western accent.it has little to do with light skin.and AA aren't light for the most part anyway.just not the brand of dark that is common ghana.they are as dark as many other africans however.
Haha Oburoni that's hilarious. That would be kind of rude/funny if a white person says hi and they respond Oburoni! I don't know if those guys were playing with you or something but Oburoni doesn't mean stranger. Oburoni is used mostly for white people. Akateni is used for African Americans. Old Sodja is right. When men greet their friends, they say Boga.
These language videos are for visitors with no knowledge of the language. What we have posted is certainly acceptable for a casual visitor to Ghana who has never spoken the language.
Clearly any visitor to Ghana that is able to speak the words in these videos will get a much better reception than a person who cannot speak any Twi at all.
A Black american is not called oburoni in ghana!!!
Hes is rather called Boga !!
But if the person is fair colored or bright we will call him oburoni just to make fun of him.We can also call him Uncle Ebo, Yellow Man or Red ooo !!! Another word for an white person who is dark colored is OBURONI PETE.
If the person is very very very fair we can call him OFRI which is rather an insult.
@SWilson510 Thank you for this video. I have recently returned from Ghana and was looking for a video to refresh my knowledge of the Twi language. This was perfect and and actually made me miss my travels.
I welcome any native Twi speaker to contact me if they wish to help produce a better video. With so few resources to learn this language, we are proud to have this post online. Clearly a better job can be done, but I am just a simple tour operator, not a Hollywood producer.
When black Americans and black Europeans are called Obruni as well as white visitors, how can you say it means "white person"? I believe "stranger" is a more appropriate translation. Although Obruni does imply whiteness because the proper reply is "black person".

But Oburoni doesnt mean stranger because it cant be used for an togolese or an liberian
OldSodja 2 years ago
