Even though I'm a daughter, this song has such meaning for me on a spiritual level. My dad committed suicide when I was 23 at the age of 48. Pain occurs in so many forms. Even though he has been gone from me for more than 25 years, I called out to him in prayer for help today. God must have heard...my need was met. Got my Dad by my side in so many ways.Thank you, Peter, for once again blessing me with the sound track of my life. Peace and joy, all!
A beautiful song. Nonetheless the rage of him has seperate our family, when I was 4 jears old, but Im loving him.We have a good time as he was elder. When I listen to this song, I think to(?) my father, who is gone into the"Other world" in 2009.
As a Dad I miss my son Alistair so much, won,t talk or even say I am his dad anymore and I dont get to see my little grandson Conner,so sad,I miss them so much, love you Al,xx
turns out petey has been misleading when some have thought him to be "religious" in some lyrical content.Turns out after some not even scrupulous investigation that he's ben using Illuminati symbolism on the majority of his album covers and images.Don't think so?Look into it.There he is displaying the typical"one eyed crap" on most of the covers.Just like all the other scum bags that do the same thing recently. What an ASSHOLE.
Although my dad had a weird way of showing it, I know he loves me and regrets not being there for me at certain points in my life. I try to focus more on that now than the pain...
I have no person whom I could call dad but I have a daughter and knows what it means to be dad and I hope that I have a good can be father, I would at least do my best to do it that my kids see it even once as the child here.
I adore u my father .... u r all my life and soon when i will have a baby,my baby will sing this song for his father Corry .... God bless u and bless my Corradino
Dad died 2 weeks ago - John Henry Reynolds August 1929 - July 2011. 8 children but one, little Bill, broke his heart and died young of leukemia Dad brought electricity to rural Ireland in the early 50s - His last gigs were with the World Bank trying to keep electricity flowing in central Russia in 2008. He was sharp in his mind until the end but his body couldnt handle 2 massive bowel operations. He pulled off his mask defiantly as he knew his body had failed him. We held his hand and he died.
WOW......everytime I hear this song....I have to appreciate all my dad did for me.....and although we are very close....it makes me realize that I don't spend enough time with him.....need to make some adjustments in my life.....thanks Peter

Incredible. As a musician, I know how difficult it is to play an instrument. I also know how tough it is to write decent lyrics. But it is exceedingly difficult to marry the two. Even elton John has had a writing partner all these years (Bernie Taupin). But my point is this: his voice is not the exceptional, pure voice of say, Roy Orbison or whomever, but yet his voice is PERFECT for his style of music, and lyrically, he ranks up there with the Dylans and Springsteens and Van Morrisons.
I can fully understand your feelings. My father was aged at 51 when he died. Since then a really difficult time started for me and I've coped with this "nightmare" since then by psycological support. Unfortunately the relationship between him and me wasn't the relationship I have with my son now who is 19years old. I think every son or daughter needs a close relationship to his father
@XELURST Your 'Dad' mate, find the strength to put your soul on the line and put it right, you can't when your gone and when your gone they are gonna miss you so, god bless

My dad died 2 years, 8 months ago. My siblings and I had gotten this DVD for him for the father's day previous. We watched the whole concert together, and both of us bit back tears during this song, trying not to be too obvious about it of course, like guys do. I'll always remember him with this song. To those whose loss is more recent...it never goes away, it just gets easier to live with. Be good to your family. Nothing is forever.
@darkbeerandcheese true the bond between father and son is deeper than many are led to believe. I am " glad " to see changes but sometimes the silence can be confusing to women. but feeling they are always with us, and they often change from one day to the other .. May the Higher Power bless you and keep you, families can be forever if you believe...
I lost my brother 3 years ago then my father lost his fight with cancer 2 months ago always in my thoughts played this at funeral then sledgehammer full blast love you dad
I think about the day he was born. I thought nothing would be stronger, than the bond created, as he came into the light to see his Daddy. The tears outnumbered any years they've had,
StefanJur...I lost my dad.. 2005. It doesn't get easier. You learn to live without your guiding light....but you will always miss them. And what's funny. You never gave them the credit they deserved until you couldn't give it. I love my papa. I can see you do too. Just be a great dad to your kids.
I have read most of the comments here ( really) and this has become a haven for those of us who have lost someone very dear to our hearts... and Peter is to be respected, and shared~
i'm often amazed, even after all the years...we have such an opportunity to find a common ground in this forum, yet we often choose to find fault....must be a refection of human nature. I find it sad actually. I love music, and life....
This is so beauiful. Peter Gabriels voice was the best and still is the best on earth I think. He was enchanting everyone in 1972 with Genesis but apart from his old pals he still does it. He has got some new old pals now; Tony and David are great musicians but Gabriel Rules!
When I was a baby, my Fathers wordplace was rioted, because they considered the work they were doing unmoral. So my father came with an escort of police and held me up, and with a microphone said "THIS is why I do this."
This comment has received too many negative votesshow
@ProfessorCrow i'm an A+ student, who happens to play for my city in two sports, i need anything but help you fuckwit, seriously, and tell your dad he is an embarrassment
@ProfessorCrow ha you think that you're some kind of psychiatrist, but actually you're an arrogant twat, who isn't even aware of his impending failures :) nice knowing you xxxxx
My Dad passed away last September; songs like these make my heart bleed.
I'm lucky enough to say that we had a strong bond that brought forth mutual love and respect. I see him every time I look in the mirror, looking at me with approval. I still miss him very much; and he will always be my inspiration and a reason for me to rise above myself and achieve happiness as well as have a meaningful life.
my son is 20 - i am 53. I couldn't have a deeper friend in my life. thanks to this and thanks for such a son. thanks MAX - I am proud of you - what ever will be your way...
@minopiet s ist schön zu lesen, das du so einen guten Sohn zu stande gebracht hast. du kannst wirklich stolz sein! one for al, and al for one? Love is the answer!
I'm sorry to hear about your dad. My dad died last Oct. He was 74 for one day. I wish you the best. This is such a beautiful song, don't you think? I wish you only happiness. I miss my dad so. Thank you for your comments
I was something of a cunt when I was growing up. my parents stuck by me when they should have really turned their back.
I look back on the way I used to behave and I am ashamed of myself for a lot of things.
Now I am grown up, my parents have seperated but I get along incredibly well with both and they are proud of the man I have become... but I just wish I could go back and change some of the things I said and did... especially toward my dad.
I know what you mean, but realizing it at any point is what makes you finally understand that you grew up to be a man. Its the unfortunate that never realize it and can make a change before its too late. but never have regrets for your past, as long as you make a change for the future is what matters.
Peter Gabriel, best ever.... Márta, Vajdaság, Szerbia
my dad is the best dad ever at the age where most of his friends are retired he's still on the roads working like crazy so me and my sisters can finish school and we did some of the best universities , travelled, did everything we wanted because of him i love him so much !!!!
I Saw my father one day crying, so i came up to him and asked what was wrong , he looked at me and told me he couldn't be more proud of me and we stood together crying i will never forget that day with my Dad love him forever.
Even though I'm a daughter, this song has such meaning for me on a spiritual level. My dad committed suicide when I was 23 at the age of 48. Pain occurs in so many forms.

Just be a great dad to your kids.

i'm often amazed, even after all the years...we have such an opportunity to find a common ground in this forum, yet we often choose to find fault....must be a refection of human nature.

Father-son connections are incredibly powerful.
When I was a baby, my Fathers wordplace was rioted, because they considered the work they were doing unmoral. So my father came with an escort of police and held me up, and with a microphone said "THIS is why I do this."
The riot stopped.

I know a good doctor I can hook you up with.
He can help you before you burst a blood vessel by getting so pissed off about the littlest fucking things in the world.
Seriously, fuckass. seek help.

I like how you're throwing random insults out of your ass about shit you don't even KNOW about.
While I'm striking all the right chords to piss you off more and more.
It's a sad day for douchebags all around the world, give yourself a round of applause.

@ProfessorCrow ha you think that you're some kind of psychiatrist, but actually you're an arrogant twat, who isn't even aware of his impending failures :) nice knowing you xxxxx

Me? Arrogant? Actually you're the one boasting about your "succesful" life and then bickering with a stranger on the internet for no goddamn reason.
You are a fucking ICON of arrogance. And unlike you, my good man, I learn from my failures. While you are still alive!
Have a good life, mate.

Dir alles Gute

I was something of a cunt when I was growing up. my parents stuck by me when they should have really turned their back.
I look back on the way I used to behave and I am ashamed of myself for a lot of things.
Now I am grown up, my parents have seperated but I get along incredibly well with both and they are proud of the man I have become... but I just wish I could go back and change some of the things I said and did... especially toward my dad.
This song makes me cry every time I hear it.
MrFoolishPride 2 years ago 4
I know what you mean, but realizing it at any point is what makes you finally understand that you grew up to be a man. Its the unfortunate that never realize it and can make a change before its too late. but never have regrets for your past, as long as you make a change for the future is what matters.
