I have the same issue, thick hair and I don't want to look like I have product either. It might sound funny, but I apply Logics Color DNA Thickening Style Spray or Matrix Amplify Full Body Texturizer when my hair is damp and blow it out. Then I curl and spray Bed Head Spoil Me, which is a defrizzer and restyler. This is the only thing I've found that holds my thick hair in a curl....hope it works for you!

it just gives the hair texture and hold.

hairspray should do the job if you don't have the wax.
