I'm not saying Iran isn't more important in the grand scheme of things. Just that there are some days where there is ample news to go around, but we seem to have a quota. Then there are days when all they do is run endless clips of the latest catfight from The View. Meh...
Last week they were whining that Obama's Cairo speech accomplished nothing. This week they're saying it forced the Iranian establishment to steal the election to avoid letting Obama claim credit for the moderate victory. Next week, if the Iranian Revolutionary government falls, and is replaced by moderates, be prepared to go back to "he had nothing to do with it" again. (The ever-difficult rhetorical TRIPLE AXEL!)
What is going on in Iran is much like Bush era America writ LARGE. Like all good stories, good analogies often require exaggeration. In the ongoing election fiasco in Iran, you have the 2000 and 2004 fiascos in the U.S. portrayed in caricature at the hands of a people whose blood clearly runs a bit hotter.
It's funny to watch the boosters for American electoral corruption SUDDENLY be able to see the obvious, when it comes to Iranian political corruption... Ahmadinejad + Bush = peas in a pod.
I wouldn't hand you a loaded gun and say you know what to do.. but, thats not a good idea you might end up shooting a museum or some cops or something
It's encouraging to see moderates and what appears like the more liberal or progressives in that region stand up against their version of ultra-conservative god chosen religious fanatics. In a way, what's happening in Iran now is very similar to what happened in our country in 2000, when Gore won the election but Bush got the selection !
It's not quite the same thing. In 2000, Gore had more votes than Bush, but neither man had a majority. The electoral process was ultimately decided by one state - Florida - not via a national conspiracy.
In this case, we have a leader who was clearly unpopular yet the Iranian gov't (which controls everything), says he won a huge majority. Clearly this is a big, national lie on Iran's part.
The supreme court did not allow a recount to continue and handed the election (selection) to Bush. Kinda like whatis being done in Iran, a "supreme something", ayatolla, handed the election to their guy. By the way, Gore had a mayority of the votes, 52%, but Florida's electoral votes were allocated in favor of Bush, not by the people, but by the supreme court. Maybe not the same magnitude, but the action was the same.
US will not be able to do any thing Hereand Iranian Mass from Rural Area will win again but US will have so many new guest and Immigrants that will be interesting
For God sakes, WTF is "middle east" and why the f* is relative positioning to England a good way to reference ASIAN MINOR, CENTRAL ASIA, WEST ASIA, or NORTH AFRICA? I'm not going along with this uneducated bull anymore.
Normally the majority comes from rural areas because turnout is so low. In this election, the majority came from Mousavi-friendly urban areas. 30 seconds of research would point out major causes for concern that the vote was rigged. Check 538 for the number crunching. I believe it was 538 (could be wrong about source) that said that if Ahmadinejad won EVERY undecided vote from the final poll, he would still be MILLIONS of votes short of his alleged total.
Just keeping repeating the word fraud and it makes it so lol wheres the evidence?
as ever the news tells you rumours and exaggerations and sensationalises the hell out of everything. If the US and Israel are having a tantrum about it you know that its a good thing :)
US and Israel are so transparently warmogering right now. Jeez cant the US just try and do its job and look after its own, everyday theres a new darkskinned baddy to fight who works with the forces of darkness, PATHETIC.
I would normally feel similarly to you outled, but right now Iran is a is what we would be considered here in america as tyrannically right-wing. Iranians have little religious freedom and those who are not of muslim faith are persecuted.
There are even laws saying that it is punishable by death to convert from Islam to another religion.
Mousavi represents a new leftist movement in Iran and he is a symbol of hope to the young and the educated.
i dont doubt that iran has troubles, every country culls its own, my problem is that another country may come in and try and sort things out, which (A) is none of there business (B) is a contradiction considering they are no less evil and (C) all this is just a pretext for war.
There will always be tyrannical leaders in fact theres no other type :)
Btw thanks for your considered response i appreciate it.
That's a very clumsy way to steal an election. Don't they have voting machines over there? Or a Supreme Court that can nullify the vote counting and appoint a winner? Perhaps we should take a lesson from Mousavi's supporters.
No, there were not riots and was no bloodshed, and I have more faith in the accuracy and credibility in the American polling systems then in a country run by the extreme politicians.
Well, not immediately. Seattle and Miami WTO protests and hundreds of thousands who marched annually to end the war were direct actions resulting from the 2000 coup d'etat.
No bloodshed?
Only because Tasers replaced the nightstick.
Look into the eyes of Bush, Cheney, Rumsfeld and Rice and tell me we weren't being lead by extremists.

Wow, I think this is way exaggerated. Ahmadinejad has huge support in the rural areas, where most of the votes come from.

Making facts out of your ass, right?
newsweekrocks 2 years ago
Wow, that's just factually not true.

Liked the intercuts, back and forth, between Mousavi and the bubba that Faux Snooze misidentified as Mousavi.

Thomas Friedman FAIL.
Iran was a democracy up until the US overthrew the government in 1953.

It's a good thing that he's getting air-time.

i dont doubt that iran has troubles, every country culls its own, my problem is that another country may come in and try and sort things out, which (A) is none of there business (B) is a contradiction considering they are no less evil and (C) all this is just a pretext for war.
There will always be tyrannical leaders in fact theres no other type :)
Btw thanks for your considered response i appreciate it.

it's like some international sitcom... the footage of Ahmadenijad should have the theme from Curb Your Enthusiasm playing over it
matthewdmartinez 2 years ago
That's a very clumsy way to steal an election. Don't they have voting machines over there? Or a Supreme Court that can nullify the vote counting and appoint a winner? Perhaps we should take a lesson from Mousavi's supporters.

No, there were not riots and was no bloodshed, and I have more faith in the accuracy and credibility in the American polling systems then in a country run by the extreme politicians.
SoySauceInAShotGlass 2 years ago
No riots?
Well, not immediately. Seattle and Miami WTO protests and hundreds of thousands who marched annually to end the war were direct actions resulting from the 2000 coup d'etat.
No bloodshed?
Only because Tasers replaced the nightstick.
Look into the eyes of Bush, Cheney, Rumsfeld and Rice and tell me we weren't being lead by extremists.

No, this is exactly like Marcos vs. Aquino in the Philippines in 1986. We'll see if it plays out the same way or not.
