Is it TRUE that a radio station in Denver wouldn't play this song because the guitar solo made it sound like a Led Zeppelin song to some programmer? Ohhh my.
@DENo1MatchGameFan I know! That's where I read it, as preposterous as it sounds. How many country music radio programmers even LISTENED to Led Zeppelin, or did they just say, "Oh, no, loud ee-lectric GIT-ar! We can't play this ... this... HARD ROCK business!"
@isitrealgood Of course back then, they wouldn't even touch his "She Loves My Car" song, and it crossed over to the pop charts at #84, but with Garth Brooks covering Billy Joel and such, they have no problem with it - a bunch of BS and hypocrisy if you ask me! Ronnie Milsap is a legend, and yet they won't even TOUCH his music today!
@DENo1MatchGameFan 1. Actually, it's according to the liner notes as written in the booklet/front cover of the compilation "Ultimate Ronnie Milsap." They (Wikipedia) don't even mention his pre-1973 singles in his discography on their site. 2. "She Loves My Car was an all-out rock song no matter how one puts it. It wasn't aimed at the country music market. The video was aimed solely at MTV to win over the pop market. For a time, in fact, MTV was the only channel allowed to play it.
@CharlieAndRonnie Cont. It broke some barriers though. "Shameless," on the other hand, was a more countrified cover which WAS aimed at country radio. 3. Regarding the legend part, if you ask Ronnie, he'd say that he's no legend. George Jones, Merle Haggard, etc. are.
@CharlieAndRonnie I agree that this information came from the booklet for "The Ultimate Ronnie Milsap", as it states that on Wiki. I know that "She Loves My Car" wasn't aimed at country radio, but apparently neither was "Stranger In My House" due to all of the backlash it got for being as pop as it was. Also, if you listen to Ronnie's remake of Paul Carrack's song "Button Off My Shirt", there isn't one thing country about it, yet it hit #4 on the charts in '88 - go figure!
@DENo1MatchGameFan 1. At least Wiki does SOME right things. 2. Actually, SIMH WAS; otherwise, RCA would've released another song to country simultaneously ("Prisoner of the Highway" b/w "She Loves My Car"). 3. According to Ronnie on one of his podcasts, BOMS went #5. Why didn't it go #1? Similar to the drastic rock influence in SIMH, that was all synths. Country radio disliked no real players. (I don't care for them, except from RM & crew; that said, it's better than the pop songs on radio...
@CharlieAndRonnie Ronnie probably got his chart info from Radio & Records Magazine - I get my chart information from Billboard. As for "BOMS" not hitting #1, that doesn't seem right, as two years earlier, "Now And Forever (You And Me)" from Anne Murray hit #1 on the country chart, and it was FULL of synthesizers and such, since it was co-written by David Foster (who brought them into full display with Chicago back then.) It was also a #92 pop hit to boot!
@DENo1MatchGameFan Unless I'm misremembering, Ronnie explicitly said it was on Billboard. (Suffice to say, his website no longer has podcasts on it, which is a shame.) As for it not being #1 unlike Murray's song, one was pretty much dance-pop/contemporary-R&B-sounding; the other is more of a ballad. How that has to do with anything, you got me. (Side note: NAF was full of synths, you said. As in it was entirely synths, or simply that it had A LOT?)
I also listen to Disco,Jazz and a little Salsa/Latino because I speak Spanish.I prefer old school for R & B but I will listen to a little of the new stuff. Ronnie Milsap as Charlie and Ronnie stated, isn't a straight country and western singer. He's got a soulful and pop voice.I can't believe they put him in the country and western category.I think he's far from it.
Thanks Charlie and Ronnnie,it's nice to see good responses for a change and intelligent post like yours and not this B.S. that the idiot posted on here about me loving country whether I believe or not. These people who only listen to country music are very "CLOSED MINDED PEOPLE"who don't have a life.I appreciate the feedback. This goes for anyone who only listen to one type or one style of music,"THEY ARE CLOSED-MINDED".I can't stand country & western.I listen to Classic Rock,R & B.
I got your reply in my e-mail honestbutugly and I'd appreciate it if you didn't dictate to me or try to tell me what I like and don't like, when you don't even know me.I can't stand Country & Western and that's all there is to it.I HATE IT. It's just that I don't consider Ronnie Milsap and Kenny Rogers Country & Western.I consider them love song singers or slow contemporary. You telling me what I like and feel and not even knowing me,sounds very ludacrous.NOTHING PERSONAL,I TELL IT LIKE IT IS!!
@MELONHEAD8458 Correct. He's not country; he's many different things (pop, rock, R&B, soul, jazz, funk, blues, etc.). He fits best in his own innovated country-pop style, which is a form of country & pop rotted in them + AC/soft rock & is the form of country that people listen to most often if they usually don't like country. Case in point, there're exceptions in (almost) every genre. "One More Try For Love" is, from my standpoint, the best pop album ever, & don't usually care for the genre.
very early videio, say 83 , or 84, yet has high quality , like some of the early rock videio's .Its done in mysterious black and white , the producer must have been some kind of a semi genius to know this format was gonna sell, with the right song.. now all we need to hear "ronnie milsap, country music hall of fame"
Yes,Ronnie really hit it on the buzzer when he came out with this song. If you are in a relationship with a woman and all of a sudden she's not treating you worth a darn anymore, even though you've been treating her like a queen, then it's pretty much like you've got a stranger in the house all of a sudden. With all do respect, why would you not feel this way when all she's doing is treating you like you are a stranger all of a sudden.
I love this song and I don't even consider this countyr music.I can't stand Country & Western but Ronnie Milsap has a lot of rhthym and sould in his voice,I'd say more of his songs are a cross between love songs and contemporary. This song tells it like it is and I can relate because,I've been in a couple of relationships where I found out that my woman cheated on me even though I know I satisfied her in bed and treated her worth a da*@.For some of these women, that's still not enough.
You like country weither you realize it or not.Theres this thing called Americanna, or progressive country. It tell the storys without the whininig and boo hoo .start with Gram parsons , then check out the handsome family, thats a good first grade level for a non country fan.If that doesnt work then check into non racial David allan Coe, was as genius , but catered to a igornant audence, who most dont get his music.
Who the hell was the one person who didn't like this? They must have been tweaking and was seeing upside down.
