@compwiz878 I can only imagine what that was like. I lived through the Gulf war in 91, this song just struck Me and combined with the fact that I loved the band . makes it hard to ignore.
@swampdonkeydad i was 12yrs old when it first started and in 6th grade cam remember sitting in school and doing nothing but watch live tv reports all day the first 3 days of the gulf war aka desert storm . and yes we all had to take notes on the happening as we did have a pop quiz was educational but also sad times
@swampdonkeydad ... actually song released in 1990 .. BEFORE desert storm .. unless they had insider info about the war.. damned yankees don't even know your own history.. just syain ..
@misterrichard78 ,It was an UNOFFICIAL anthem of the soldiers waiting to DREOS, Dennis DeYoung made the anthem comment on the LIVE DVD, I had only heard it on the news when We watched the troops on the Aircraft coming home, I AM CANADIAN, Retired Armed Forces, Not American, But I do watch the news.
I'll admit, I didn't realize this was a Styx song (d'oh, how could I not w/ DDY's voice?) . Most of my searches for this song came up w/ the wrong song & artist. Love this song. I'm a child of the mid 70's. &, I pretty much still like 70's music. lol
@drfreud65 Actually this song is 1991. But it still is close to the 80's. I really love this song! My mom had always loved this song , and of course I loved it too after hearing it too. It gives you hope and inspiration after hearing it , it's just a great feel good song and Dennis DeYoung has AMAZING vocals!
This song says a lot about where we are as country today...We so some great tings as a people when we really want to, but I feel like we are getting deeper in the woods and more lost everyday by continuing to follow our current leaders. We need someone to step up and show us the way back home!
Picture me karoaking this song at the local bar with my mom watching on her blue eyes sparkling and she clapped louder than anyone else....lost her in death in 2006...oh mommy how I miss you and the times we had BDETR
@theoriginalnorseguy Oh, it sure does; that's him. If you do a google search for 'Edge of the Centurty' you'll find the album/video band members (w/ both the brothers) listed. Also his style is very basic, nothing technical. I'm not saying there's anything wrong with that, he lays down a very solid, un-flashy beat, and it shines through on this song.
I remember a news clip from the 1st war with Saddam (Iraq) when the jets were rolling in, bombing multiple targets with pin-point accuracy and this song was playing in the background, KICK-ASS ! It will forever stay in my memory. DeYoung

Dennis DeYoung had an ego? Maybe so, but Tommy Shaw had one as well. At least Dennis was willing to bend a little, Tommy would not. The band is just not Styx without either one.
this tell & shows us that this world is messed up. Back then and now. Why can't people find it in their hearts to just live in peace with everyone. All it takes is a simple smile when u walk by someone. A simple hello even. We need not to expect the worse in everyone before knowing them. I thank the troops for fighting for our freedom, our safety. We should be there for them too. We should also always be there for our kids.No matter how old they are. We all need guidence.Even at age 100 if lucky
i'm a huge styx fan. I wrote and posted a song on youtube called, " IN YOUR MIND " by andrew gerbasi feat steve morrison. Have a listen and tell me if you feel the styx influence. Cheers
Dennis really has an incredible knack for telling the American story in such a pure and honest way, and sometimes scornfull! Dennis you are classic man, love ya, from canada!
It seems we can relate to this song more... I remembering hearing this song when I was very young on 96.5. I've seen Dennis twice solo with the music of Styx love this song.
I wish I had learned sooner how to love and care like my dog, how to appreciate what we have, and how to treasure every breath next to you. How egocentric we humans can be. We care for things that are not important. We truly do not need much to be happy. So sad that we waist so much time, energy and effort in matters of no relevance. At the end, the only thing that we should do is to love everything granted to us by our dear Lord.
have a listen to a song called, " IN YOUR MIND " by andrew gerbasi feat steve morrison on vocals. Nice song if you have the time give it a listen and comment there if you agree with me thats its a good one. Cheers!!!
When I was 8 years old, I was just sitting in my dad's car, when he decided to play the live version of this song for me. He told me it was by a band called "Styx". And as the years passed, I forgot the name of the song and how it sounded. All I remembered was that they said "This one's for John".
@drfreud65 You're thinking of Queen's Freddie Mercury, who died of AIDS in the early 1990s, John Panozzo died in '96 from alcohol poisoning. Because when the band split in '83 after Tommy quit Styx, he picked up the bottle and couldn't put it down. Styx was his life and when they split, he just went down hill. The last NEW song he recorded with Styx is on the Greatest Hits part 2 album the last two songs.
i remember singing a variation of this song with my chior in grade school. hopefully we can bring it back before i graduate high school. this song will definately hold a special place in my heart!
@iscoto well I know that I was mistaken on hthe timelines of it, but at a love concert it was dedicated to him. But if you just listen to the music and the melodies, the words and just the whole song itself, it is about a confused man that has some hope in the falling torn apart world,
love styx!! have a listen to an original called " IN YOUR MIND " by andrew gerbasi another styx fan. have a listen to his tune. sounds nice. and comment while your there and tell me if you agree. CHEERS
I love how on most videos the people who "accidentally" leave CAPS LOCK on are criticised and on this one they have the most votes... I think I'll vote them up myself! :]
I am reading some of these posts and...its funny. No one likes war but everyone loves freedom. They seem to come hand in hand. We give to one for the other. Styx may be trying to get a message politcaly but the theme is strong and true...Hope.
@fernbern0131 If and when you have time, watch on youtube behind the music - Styx, notice in this video Tommy Shaw left the band because of Dennis taking over. Styx was about Classic heavy rock and Tommy stuck to his guns.
@fernbern0131 umm, its not political. it just has that sort of connotation. they wrote it as a tribute to their drummer john. if you were a real fan, you would love them no matter what they put out. its okay to not like a song, but you have to accept all of their music as who they are, like the songs or not.
and besides, i dont see you making that kind of heart melting, chart topping music. so i would say that you are the weenie for only knowing/liking their mega-hits.
@peDoo69 I agree with everything you've said.... except they wrote it like five or six years before John died.... in fact you can even see him drumming in the video
I never knew what politcal schmucks these guys were until I heard this song again nearly 20 years later. I'm glad they are defunct. Bungholes! When I was 18 I liked this song. Now I realize what a heat of political BS it is. Schmucks!
I remember when this was popular on the airwaves, it was dubbed the official theme to the Gulf War in Iraq. Thumbs up if you remember this era of time while listening to this song!
Yes, that is John. This album was done when Tommy left the band. Shortly afterwards, John passed away and Tommy came back the band. Thats when Dennis had it.
Oh how this brings back such good memories. I was in my twenties when this song was hitting the charts hard and now I'm 49 and you know, this is music compared to some of the artists out there. The 80ies is still and will always be the best.
I agree with most people on here that this song does give hope to a very cruel world. If only more people listened to the words in this song,I truly believe the world would be a much better place.
Kind of funny to think this was the same band that did Mr.Roboto. lol

Every incarnation of Styx is fantastic. I saw them twice last year and have have tickets to see them In Feb. I have been a fan since the 70s.
Yes, they are not with de Young now. Gowen is a fantastic replacement .
The band continues to do great Styx rock and roll with leaving out De Young's pop "chick music" and give it total justice.
This is one of the best of Dennis De Young's songs. I love it!

"...wash my illusion away. Show me the way, show me the way.
Give me the strength and courage to believe I will get there someday." these lyrics are timeless.

@ShawnMcVey Dennis De Young had an ego a mile wide. That is why he left the group. He thought he could do bigger and better things. Ummmmm, NOT!!!
drfreud65 9 months ago
@drfreud65 No. I'm pretty sure Tommy Shaw left the group because he could do "bigger and better things. Ummmmm, NOT!!!" I'm just sayin'

When I was 8 years old, I was just sitting in my dad's car, when he decided to play the live version of this song for me. He told me it was by a band called "Styx". And as the years passed, I forgot the name of the song and how it sounded. All I remembered was that they said "This one's for John".
BaneOfXistence4 11 months ago 21
@BaneOfXistence4 That would be John Pannazo, (sp?) a band member who died of AIDS.
drfreud65 9 months ago
@drfreud65 You're thinking of Queen's Freddie Mercury, who died of AIDS in the early 1990s, John Panozzo died in '96 from alcohol poisoning. Because when the band split in '83 after Tommy quit Styx, he picked up the bottle and couldn't put it down. Styx was his life and when they split, he just went down hill. The last NEW song he recorded with Styx is on the Greatest Hits part 2 album the last two songs.

well I see that 14 people don't know good music such a shame this as happened to a powerful song they need to do some deep soul searching
johnnyboy6473 11 months ago
i don't understand. if this song was a pretty big hit, then why did the label drop styx shortly after the album was released?
NathanRyanAllen 11 months ago
@iscoto well I know that I was mistaken on hthe timelines of it, but at a love concert it was dedicated to him. But if you just listen to the music and the melodies, the words and just the whole song itself, it is about a confused man that has some hope in the falling torn apart world,

They need to stick with "come sail away" or "Mr Roboto" instead of this political crap. Bunch of weenies.
fernbern0131 1 year ago
@fernbern0131 From now on we'll refer to them as the "Chicken Styx". It even rhymes with the Dixie Chicks.
FastPonyGT 1 year ago
@fernbern0131 If and when you have time, watch on youtube behind the music - Styx, notice in this video Tommy Shaw left the band because of Dennis taking over. Styx was about Classic heavy rock and Tommy stuck to his guns.
hz11287 1 year ago
@fernbern0131 umm, its not political. it just has that sort of connotation. they wrote it as a tribute to their drummer john. if you were a real fan, you would love them no matter what they put out. its okay to not like a song, but you have to accept all of their music as who they are, like the songs or not.
and besides, i dont see you making that kind of heart melting, chart topping music. so i would say that you are the weenie for only knowing/liking their mega-hits.
peDoo69 1 year ago
