I get John Lennon's message, and while I do like John Lennon he has an extreme lack of understanding, and he sometimes comes off as an insensitive prick. This song in particular I think has crossed the line, but you know what, even if I don't agree with him 100% I still have my own separate view on the matter. I honestly like all the artists he's 'insulting' in this song because of their unique sense of spirituality. George Harrison, and Cat Stevens in particular.

Bob Dylan became a Christian soon before this song was released, and he made a Gospel song "You Gotta Serve Somebody", George Harrison found Hinduism during the Beatle years, and Cat Stevens (renamed Yusuf Islam) found Islam in 1977. John Lennon knew all these musicians pretty well (especially Bob Dylan who inspired him, and gave him his first marijuana cigarette). John Lennon is trying to say 'Don't serve a made up deity, and do the right thing for goodness sake'.
He's not saying these things don't exist, he's saying regardless of there existence, in reality they only thing that anybody should worry about so intently is themselves.

Questions of religion/atheism aside... and putting aside this specific songs... Lennon was a midget next to Dylan. He could MAYBE write better melodies (neither was a melodist, McCartney towered over both of them put togther in that respect). Lennon could def sing better, no question. Neither was a virtuoso guitarist tho Dylan could play very well. Dylan was/is a great live performer, Lennon not really... tho he never had time to develop as such. But Lennon does not compare as a lyricist.

I proceeded to the place I was told, sat with a sick man and he died in front of me . I did all the right things and went home.
