Captivity is cruel and wrong for ANY animal, especially Orcas. Even if the whale is born in captivity, it does not mean that they have a good life and 'don't know any better'. They die a lot younger in captivity, what does this tell us? The whole entire concept of keeping orcas in a tiny enclosure means that there is little diversity. If we want to maintain the existance of these beautiful, majestic animals then we need to leave them in the wild where they belong.

I can tell when this video was caught, this orca had just been taken from the wild not to long before hand. This pool is also illegal, it's much too small for regulation. I wonder what year this video was taken.
@S0XF0X Neocia was captive born at Marineland. She was the last killer whale to ever live in this pool and that was over 6 years ago. Also, if you do a quick search on the Fisheries and Oceans Canada website you will see that there are no regulations or "legal" standards for marine mammal pools. Please don't make false statements.

Which is why they constructed the new friendship cove a few years back thats essentially 6 times bigger than this one. The tank you see in the video holds 5 dolphins now.
they dont have the whales in this tank anymore. they have a tank called Friendship Cove where they killer whales are located. Also at MarineLand they do not have the trainers in the water during the show. the show with the whales are mainly splashing.

The reason keeping killer whales in captivity is so controversial is not the size of the tanks, it's the fact that killer whales are more socially developed than any other animal, second only to humans. Killer whales are the only animal besides humans to exhibit a sense of CULTURE. In the wild killer whales in different regions communicate in different dialects, leading us to believe that they developed language in much the same way we did, and passing language and culture down to their young.

We (well, not ME personally, but the experienced workers there) moved the killer whales into a much bigger tank. It's called Friendship Cove :) The whales have a choice of being in very deep water there OR they can swim to fairly shallow water as well. Now, I don't work with the whales personally, so I'm not sure about their names... But we do have two killer whales at the moment, and they're both very happy, as far as I can tell :)
well since you only hav 2 orcas left aren't you planning on getting new ones? like arn't you gonna ask SeaWorld or something becuz rlly I feel that friendship cove should only be for orcas and not beluga's they have artic cove. So you could ask them to bring some of Tilikum's sperm over to Marineland and implant it into Kiska!
I disagree. The animals are clearly happy. I am an extreme animal lover, hurting anything that couldnt defend itself is something i could never do. These wales are such as dogs, my dog loves my attention, loves me treating her and loves me playing with her. These wales love their trainers, and thier trainers love their wales. Accidents happen but if they were really unhappy do you think they would do what they do? That whale could easily chewed her up. I think they are perfectly happy.

Much like we do to our pet dogs? Are they happy.. well mine certainly is. They dont work for food, they are fed, the fact they do tricks amuses them, if i fed my dog twice a day and left it to get on with it, it would be bored and depressed. This is social interaction which all animals like this crave. If you know ANYTHING about seaworld, one of their goals is to bread these animals and have done so and in which case this is their home. If they didnt like it, they could kill them easily.
I have video footage of Neocia as a very young calf with her mum. I flimed it when i was a kid on holiday in Canada.

The orca's are not doing tricks. They are natural behaviours that they would perform in the wild. .......All thats happening here is the Orcas learn to do these NATURAL BEHAVIOURS on cue and get rewarded with fish.
Have to say i'm glad the Orca's now have a much bigger place to live. That tank was way too small.
when i was about 9 years old (in 2001) i was at the stage and i was so happy to say hello to neocia for a first time and 3 years later, i was watching the news with my parents and my sister and when the news showed a picture of neocia and told that she passed away, my eyes and my mouth went shock and i really want really want to say right now is.. "neocia, i will miss u with all of my heart and i wish always remember me 4ever!!"

I think SeaWorld and other places with orcas take very good care of their orcas,if the orcas were mistreated.They would attack the trainers and not do any tricks.

no marineland is a good place for orcas. They love them and treat them with care. This trainer is actually my aunt and has raised neocia since she was a calf.

Actually, Neocia died a couple years ago. She died at the tender, young age of 12 - when in the wild, female killer whales have been known to live to be 60-90 years old. She lived in that really small back circular tank which you can see when they swim by it. This marine park has had really 'bad luck' with orcas - in fact another young one just died there last month.
Pets? Once they were wild to and they are just doing there job whether they do it or not someone else will and as for the size of the tank that everyone seems concerned about they normally have a performing tank seperated from the other one.. I mean of course its not going to be as big as the ocean but what whale swims the whole ocean. They take careof them. Its hard to say if she died because of the place, homeostasis? they could have just as easily died in the wild maybe even sooner who knows

AnimalAbuseSucks, there was an orca named Neocia, and that's her. The reason why you haven't seen her naame on on Orcahome is because you were looking at the "living captive orca" page. At the bottom is a page about deceased orcas. Neocia is there since she died in 2004.

I work there.
They don't keep the whales in that tank, that's only the show tank. There is a MUCH bigger tank for the whales to go when they aren't showing :)

I disagree. The animals are clearly happy. I am an extreme animal lover, hurting anything that couldnt defend itself is something i could never do. These wales are such as dogs, my dog loves my attention, loves me treating her and loves me playing with her. These wales love their trainers, and thier trainers love their wales. Accidents happen but if they were really unhappy do you think they would do what they do? That whale could easily chewed her up. I think they are perfectly happy.

THEY ARE NOT HAPPY THEY ARE TRAINED TO DO THAT!!! HOW WOULD YOU LIKE IT IF SOMEBODY TRAINED YOU TO PARADE IN FRONT OF PEOPLE AND CARRY SOMEONE ON YOUR BACK JUST FOR THEIR AMUSEMENT ? YOU WOULDN'T LIKE IT! Much like we do to our pet dogs? Are they happy.. well mine certainly is. They dont work for food, they are fed, the fact they do tricks amuses them, if i fed my dog twice a day and left it to get on with it, it would be bored and depressed. This is social interaction which all animals like this crave. If you know ANYTHING about seaworld, one of their goals is to bread these animals and have done so and in which case this is their home. If they didnt like it, they could kill them easily.

I have video footage of Neocia as a very young calf with her mum. I flimed it when i was a kid on holiday in Canada.
If anyone wants to see it i will be happy to share, but i'm not good with computers so if someone can tell me how to get the footage from video to pc, then i'll gladly share. x
Will be coming back to Canada in may can't wait to go to Marineland

The orca's are not doing tricks. They are natural behaviours that they would perform in the wild. .......All thats happening here is the Orcas learn to do these NATURAL BEHAVIOURS on cue and get rewarded with fish.
Have to say i'm glad the Orca's now have a much bigger place to live. That tank was way too small.

when i was about 9 years old (in 2001) i was at the stage and i was so happy to say hello to neocia for a first time and 3 years later, i was watching the news with my parents and my sister and when the news showed a picture of neocia and told that she passed away, my eyes and my mouth went shock and i really want really want to say right now is.. "neocia, i will miss u with all of my heart and i wish always remember me 4ever!!"

I think SeaWorld and other places with orcas take very good care of their orcas,if the orcas were mistreated.They would attack the trainers and not do any tricks.

and its not true how u think it is. at marineland their trainers love them very much. My aunt loves the animals she works with and wouldnt let anything in the world try to hurt them. they are actually safer in marineland then being out on their own where their threatened from being killed from pollution, propellers, and for killing them for their blubber. even if its against the law to do this in some countries, PEOPLE STILL DO IT!!!

In Marine Land they are really cool with them ..

Do you remember when it was really 'Fun' to get a great grizzly bear and have them ride around at a circus on a tricycle? -- I agree with you fully, if you want to appreciate Orcas go out and see them in the while instead of watching these silly styles of Aqua Circuses.

Actually, Neocia died a couple years ago. She died at the tender, young age of 12 - when in the wild, female killer whales have been known to live to be 60-90 years old. She lived in that really small back circular tank which you can see when they swim by it. This marine park has had really 'bad luck' with orcas - in fact another young one just died there last month.

Pets? Once they were wild to and they are just doing there job whether they do it or not someone else will and as for the size of the tank that everyone seems concerned about they normally have a performing tank seperated from the other one.. I mean of course its not going to be as big as the ocean but what whale swims the whole ocean. They take careof them. Its hard to say if she died because of the place, homeostasis? they could have just as easily died in the wild maybe even sooner who knows

This video was made in June 2004. I dont' no how sick she was at this moment, she just died in August 01 2004. For sure Marineland
tried to help her to get better. ( NEOCIA was the money maker )

AnimalAbuseSucks, there was an orca named Neocia, and that's her. The reason why you haven't seen her naame on on Orcahome is because you were looking at the "living captive orca" page. At the bottom is a page about deceased orcas. Neocia is there since she died in 2004.
Make sure you have your facts straight before you start making claims. It makes you look ignorant.
