@agators212 Yevgeny is still a coach at WOGA, but coaches different gymnastics. I imagine that part of the reason is that back in the 90s when Carly and Hollie started, Valeri was still competing at an international elite level himself.

Please, she is a great gymnast and on that day she was the best. Obviously the judges thought she deserved, and I believe that too. There may be others competing that day that are better, but Carly showed up to win that day, and did.

I remeber being nine years old and my parents letting me stay up late to watch this. I also remember running around my front yard sceaming when she won. I was on the fence about quitting at that time, but I stayed in it because of her. She is why I love gymnastics.

Well think what you want. Patterson isnt half the gymnast Khorkina is and will never be. Nobody in gymnastics even remembers Carly anymore. Even Mary Lou forgot her, after Natia's AA Olympic win "you were the only American to win the Olympic AA" Mary Lou "well not anymore." Best U.S gymnasts ever dont even include Carly- they are Shawn Johnson, Shannon Miller, Nastia Liukin, trailed by Kim Zmeskal, Mary Lou Retton

1994 Worlds- vault silver, bars silver

1994 Europeans- AA silver, bars gold

1994 Goodwill Games- bars gold, vault silver

1995 European Cup- AA gold, bars gold, vault bronze, floor bronze

1996 event Worlds- bars gold

Khorkina at 15 and 16 was even better than Patterson overall. And Patterson's peak was at 16 which is why she retired. Are you honestly trying to suggest Patterson is a better gymnast than Khorkina from any perspective.

......but what is evident either way is this. She isnt even a top 40 gymnast all time and Khorkina is top 5 all time easily. There is no reason to assume her anything beyond that. She chose to retire, her skills looked quickly outdated by the gymnasts in the upcoming years, and at her peak she didnt win anything other than that one AA title. Khorkina = legend of gymnastics. Patterson = trivia question.

What "titles" would Patterson have gained after the 2004 Games? If her back didnt go out already she might have gotten lucky to win the 06 AA world title because of Ferrari falling, Memmel injured, and Nastia injured, and if she hit all her routines, but that is a whole lot of what ifs. Obvously she never wins a big title on vault, bars, or floor. And the beam winners from 2005 on were all too tough for her to beat too.

I hate to say it (and agree with such an abrasive poster as getnasty) but.....she is kinda along the lines of Shawn Johnson. Robotic artistry but powerful tumbling. IN the relm of artistry her routine IS disappointing.

she won the all around but catalina ponor beat her on her favorite event. she never won a world championship all around, and svetlana won 3 world championships, she went to 3 olympic games and invented skills in all the events. even when she won i like her teammate long lines and good style of courtney koopets, unfourtenely she was fighting with pain on her ancle

@dhube The olympics was just like Carly said after the team final, JUST ANOTHER COMPETITION. Yea, that was right just ONE COMPETITION, but to win a lots of world titles is better, especially when competing all the time with new generations, its hard when the other ones are younger and she was getting old, it is also risky because when learning new skills all the time it is easier to get an injury.

@dhube dont delude yourself. Yes Patterson has the Olympic AA title but that is the only thing she has ever won other than 1 Team title at Worlds. She has never won a World individual title on anything. She also did not win an Olympic event title. In fact she only has 4 total individual World or Olympic medals. To compare her career to Khorkina is like comparing Sarah Hughes to Kwan. In all time greats Khorkina is right amongst the top and Patterson isnt even in the top 40 probably.

@russianskatingfan but you have got to take into account that she was only 16 when she won this....of course she hasn't won as many medals and titles as khorkina because she was 25 in this games, so she has had more experience and history than patterson. If patterson didn't retire after this olympics then she probably would of gained more medals and titles.

@jandj094 I doubt out. She had back problems and she would have been overtaken by Liukin and Memmel i 2005, then by many in later years. She didnt have the talent to dominate gymnasts like Khorkina. Imagine her going up against Shawn and Nastia in 2008, lol. She won in 2004 since it was a nothing field- aging way way past her prime Khorkina and nothing else. Even a healthy Kupets could have beaten her or Ponor had she trained bars.  Ponor was the real best gymnast of the games with 3 golds.

But that's what happend to khornkina...as she went on in her career other gymnasts had beaten her like patterson. It happens. I'm not saying that khorkina is a bad gymnast, which she isn't. But patterson was better than her on THAT night, and got the gold. I do agree that ponor is a very good gymnast but has weak areas also.

@jandj094 Yes Patterson was better on one night than a way way past her prime Khorkina at 25. Khorkina way past her prime was better than her the the previous year on one night at 24. So peak Patterson vs washed up Khorkina is 1-1 head to head. Now imagine Patterson vs peak Khorkina from 97-2000. Prime Khorkina would have destroyed Patterson in the AA and on every event but beam.

Imagine Patterson if she competed at age 25. She probably wouldnt even qualify for U.S Nationals.

So fact is all she was is a flash in the pan who in her best 2 years ever never even won an event title, and who at the site of her biggest victory (the Olympic AA win over the worst field ever) found herself outshone by Ponor who left the Game with 3 golds to her 1 and beat her on her best event. So fact she is no Khorkina, nor even Johnson or Liukin.

Patterson 2004- AA gold, beam silver

Khorkina 1997 (Worlds)- AA gold, bars gold, beam silver, floor silver (tied for gold but tiebreaker rule)

Patterson 2003- AA silver

Khorkina 2001(Worlds)- AA gold, bars gold, vault gold, floor bronze

So forget about longevity, just compare the two gymnasts in their best years and their success. And Khorkina faced a much deeper field than those year than the 04 one.

Now watch Anna Pavlovas vault and watch Carlys vault. Carly land out of the line and was short. Pavlova was more straight in the air. Now watch the uneven bars,both of them were great. On balance beam, Carly was awesome,fantastic,but Pavlova wasnt too bad at all and performed unique elements connected. On floor Pavlova was better.

@heidilove4911 Pavlova stuck every landing, one of them was a blind landing on the third pass. Carly did not stuck 3 o her 4 tumbling passes. Those are supposed to be deductions after deductions and not to mention the dance elements where she supposed to get more deductions. In artistry Pavlova was more elegant. My conclusion is that Pavlova deserved gold, Carly silver, and Svetlana bronze. The judges did not judge good on this Olympics. Paul won a gold medal with a big fall on vault?haha no way
