I hate these things with a passion, we used to used tadpoles for bait in my buddies pond and we would always end up hooking one of these bastards. Stupid things are super aggressive too.
haha when I went fishing with my dad, we were so busy trying to pull up a HUGE catfish a crane snuck up on us and ate almost half of the blue gills we fished.
i hate when that happens i was just realing in a little bluegill then pow a Water Macosin bites my fish im like WTF but i was a little scared cause they are venomous
@chowmonkey54 a better way is to identify features such as triangular head shape, pits, patterns and vivid colorations. don't go with the length/width theory. if you don't know what you're looking at, then stay the fuck away.
I was fishing for bass in the potomac when a water moccasine came within inches of my rapela and another time when i was surface trolling with a squid an eagle tried to get it but it missed lol
@dangloc89 no it won't choke. why do you think there are aquatic snakes? because they like fish. and, it won't choke on the spines because snakes swallow their prey head first. always.
I caught a water snake (Florida Banded Water Snake) with a plastic worm while fishing for bass one time. He shot across the top of the water at it and grabbed it, tugging back and forth against me, then let go when he got close to me, . He kept doing it and on the third try I think he had a hard time getting his teeth dislodged from the rubbery worm (he wasn't hooked), and i brought him all the way in. Took a couple of pics and let him go, wish I had the video.

I remember seeing a black and yellow snake swimming while fishing once, we never ever have snakes in the area so i was stunned when i saw a 'dangerous looking'one.. Left it alone tho, could be poisoness..
@oven1211 All snakes have teeth, and if they bite you, it will hurt. But in America, only one kind of semi-aquatic snake is venomous, and that's the cottonmouth. All other species of venomous snakes in America spend most of their time on land, though some do live in wetter areas than others.
@pophaterrocklover43 Water moccasin is another name for the cottonmouth. Copperheads are in the same genus as cottonmouths, and as a result they're sometimes referred to as moccasins as well.
@MrCoryjohnson1 In America, only cottonmouths and copperheads get the moccasin nickname. We use "moccasin" specifically to distinguish our two pit vipers without rattles (Agkistrodon) from the rattlesnakes (Crotalus). It would appear that in Canada you only have one genus of pit viper, and it comes with rattles.
@oven1211 negative. as long as it's just a water snake. however, even non-venomous snake bites are painful and pose the risk for infection. their mouths have so much bacteria that anti-biotics are recommended for non-venomous bites.
Yeah right yr a herpatologist.. Thats not a cottonmouth, im not even from america and i know its not a cottonmouth.. Doesnt have any features of a viper what so ever.
@1HMfan ur a dumbass herpatologist if u think thats a water mocassin, how did you even get that job? Water mocassins have a viper shaped head i think you need a little more training

LOL that is exactly how i caught mine :D easy freaking snakes to feed they will eat fish frogs and rats so easy pet just , they bite and it bleeds a lot
this snake is only dangerous to FISH.....no cotton mouths in New Jersey.....people that kill snakes, any snakes!,are assholes.....I have caught brown water snakes on a rod and reel many times. If you handle them they WILL bite you and they sqirt a nasty smelling musk on you in defense....but they are harmless
I had one keep swimming up and attacking 3 crappie I had on a stringer, I'd yell and splash and poke at him with my pole but he'd just come right back and attack the crappie again! I think he realized they couldnt escape and saw it as a free meal!
i had one swim up on me were i was fishing all i could see was its head and i thought it was a twig it just came up on land and lloked at me and slithered off
@TammyGC No, most are not. There are many species of water snakes that are completely harmless to people. Not dangerous at all. Nerodia are about as dangerous as pill bugs. The worst they can do is give you a bite that hurts a heck of a lot less than a pin prick.
i was fishing for large mouth bass with a yellow bellie than i saw one of my ponds snakes chaseing my bait and i was like oh heck no and i realed as fast and i could but it caught up :(.... so i realed it in and beat it with a stick!!!! :]
