say whatever you want ,but johnny depp was perfect for the role ...I mean mr Depp created the same aura and he totally fit ,he's a smart guy and he understood dillinger ,he got it ,he took this film cause he wanted to and not to get more fame ...many other actors would be like "well i hate this guy ,he did this and.....blah ,but its my job - I'm an actor !"
Warren brought a kind of redneck psychotic glee to the role of Dillinger. Johnny Depp tried to play Dillinger the way James Dean or some method actor might. Warren had the devil-may-care swagger and the cajones to pull it off. John Dillinger was no brooding headcase--he was a professional bank robber who loved the work and the lifestyle and the notoriety.
this movie is off dillinger billie nevered killed anyone and he never pointed a gun at billie at lest Public Enemies Change Two Historic things like pretty boy floyd and baby face nelson but this was flat out wrong THIS IS MAKING HIM LOOK BAD
I heard there was a scene, where he was on the bridge on Greasy Bens road!!! I just got back from that bridge, its about to fall over!!! It has a giant hole in the middle!!! I took alot of pictures, its awsome
Oates is a great Dillenger. He's got the attitude an a surprising physical resemblance. This '73 flick destroys "Public Enemies." I was ten when I first saw this and even amongst todays big budget films this grabbed my attention way more. This movie had non-stop bank robberies and action. Big shootouts with lots of guns and bodies dropping left and right. From an action perspective this was ahead of its time. Anyone who likes action films and/or Dillenger should watch this
ok the audio in this video is not well synced at all...in fact, i've never before seen a video on youtube with such poor audio syncing...now then, depp made a wonderful dillinger, though one of his accomplices in the public enemies film actually looks a lot more like the real dillinger. but only depp could have pulled the acting off. it was a truly remarkable film. this old version, i haven't seen before.
depp is/was a phenomenal actor. i have just seen him/depp so much now no matter what the role he is playing i just see depp. now depp seems to have settled for merely being weird for the sake of being weird very often. he was not right for the role of dillinger. oates on the other hand was perfect. he came from the tough stuff. oates had the great depression, wwII, the 50's, the 60's etched into every line of his face.
Milius is phenomenal. Oates is incredible. Big budget moviemakers can try these days, but none can come close to the visceral thrill of seeing this on ANY screen.
@pookie67 yeah, i always liked aidman's acting and voice work. i wonder if there is a manner in which we can confirm this as being him doing the narration here? thanks for the reply.
I agree. He kind of made him too dark. Oates made it like Dillinger was having fun. Dillinger seemed to love the fame and Oates portrayal reflected that. Plus Depp just looks to small.
Just watched Public Enemies - disapointed ! I was expecting more from Michael Mann than a straightforward remake of this. Johnny Depp is good as Dillinger, but nowhere near as good as Warren Oats.
I have seen both and frankly, I think Johnny Depp was remarkable as John Dillinger and way above warren oates or anybody else who tried to play john dillinger
johnny depp not worthy enough to wipe warren oates' butt!
and this an aip drive-in cheapie----the way gangster movies were supposed to be made and watched.
even james cagney's WHITE HEAT had a drive-in scene.

This is one of the best movies I've ever seen. Better than Bonnie and Clyde. I can't wait until Public Enemies comes out on DVD.

This movie was pretty good. Oates looks more like Dillinger. I liked Dreyfuss's portrayal of Baby Face Nelson.
