As one of the survivors, I was always ashamed because I feel that no one will ever understand of what went on under Khmer Rouge regime. There're really no words that can describe the feelings unless you've gone through it yourself. I wish no one should ever go through it. When she talked about how nice and sincere the locals are, my first reaction would normally be "of course they're nice to you, you're a celebrity! Everyone's nice to you!". But I have travelled to Cambodia myself and I totally agree. The locals go through hardship but they don't fail to smile and treat you with respect and friendliness. The thing that pissed me off were actually some of the tourists who treated the locals like slaves.
She was my idol and now she hurt my people deeply and i do not know why she did that if she does not know anything about us. I admired her so much but now how can I love her when she hates us? I saw the shoot on the back of National Geographic. It was just stunning. But what is equally as stunning is this video. She speaks so simply but so truthfully on matters. I could watch her sit in that shelter all day. And Cambodia is a beautiful place.

It amazes me that because one human being (who happens to be famous) donating money and raising awareness against poverty instigates so much hate on other people who don't even take a MINUTE of their pathetic life helping these kids. Ironic, Louis Vuitton benefits highly from third world country labor. I have been to Cambodia, and met the locals in the villages. Changed my life. They are not materialistic, and so warm and loving and cheerful. They get by on very little means. Any westerner should visit. One day _I learned that these children often went to the city, because they had no other choice, since they lost their limb...family to landmine. They hoped to make a living in the big city.
It was the wet season, when the streets got flooded with water, and I remember these children building a boat to transport customers from point A to B. I smile at that...and then I cry.

That is a far gap from just writing a small amount of your earnings and sending it to a foundation.
