I currently own a 5D Mark II and was looking to replace my Canon S80 which is now 6 yrs old. While I love the S80 and the quality pics it captured, the bulkiness of this point-and-shoot (P&S) became inconvenient. My wife was adamant she wanted a more compact P&S this time around. In addition to great pics, I was looking for a P&S with ...

Hey I recently got the Canon PowerShot ELPH 300 HS, what would you say are the best settings for recording a video? And do you think it's a good enough camera to shoot little short movies/films? Thanks & awesome comparison video you got!! =)
Hello my name is philip and i do videos about tech;p I did a full in-depth review for this camera and it would be great if you could take a moment to visit my channel and view that video;)
This is a great side by side comparison. The shots with with the sun in frame show that the canon is a bit soft compared to the panasonic, probably due to lens coating. But on ebay the elph 300 is about $150 vs $500 for the panasonic. Thanks for posting.
I have to say that I like the Panasonic more inside and the Powershot looks a little better outside I love both cameras though. Hey Guys please come check out my channel I cover Technology, Unboxings, and more
The Panasonic performs better in every way. Its low-light is more detailed, blacks don't seem to bottom out as much as the Cannon's, it's auto-focus for video is much much better (obviously), not to mention the audio quality which is worlds apart from the Cannon's underwater microphone!
I thought they where similar priced cameras though, so for double the price you don't get double the quality, although the Panasonic is certainly the clear winner.
The Panasonic is more natural in colors and has very fast auto focus. It is also exemplary in low light thanks to the bigger sensor than the PowerShot. The PowerShot, on the other hand, is more vibrant but it is slow to focus and has muddled audio. Panasonic wins.
Hey David, I just got my PowerShot yesterday. I'm still learning how to use the camera, but I wanted to know what camera mode you usually record your 1080p videos on. So far I've tried Program mode and Portrait mode. Which quality mode do you find the best for typical vlog videos?
Seems like the Cannon is better when it comes to a very brightly lit set, like the first clip. However, when you look at when the sun started setting, the Panasonic was clearly better. Overall the Panasonic would be better because of the versatility.
Canon is so much better. Can't believe the panasonic costs nearly twice as much, the only advantage I could tell was the panasonic seemed to have better auto focus
@IIXRATEDIIHiTMAN To be fair, they're very different cameras. Technically speaking, the Panasonic is the way to go. Canon's video functionalities are purely bonuses, when it's really meant for photography. Still though, both cameras are GREAT for their prices.
@thecreativeone they are different cameras, but it looks like the canon's sensor unsurprisingly, even for a camera not made to do video, like the DSLR's, creates better video. The colors are much more vivid and the field of view is wider, it looks sharper (to me at least) and just better looking. Although, the audio is tremendously better on the Panasonic clearly.
I would have to say Canon PowerShot ELPH 300 HS it really handled the sun well. Also, side note the Panasonic focused faster but i would but the Canon PowerShot.
I personally like the Panasonic, the auto focus is much more detailed then the Canon, even if the canon has better video colors, you can very carefully alter a lot of colors in FCPX. You can make it look amazing with the color effects you can do. But I hate the audio quality on the Canon, the Panasonic's audio quality is far better. But great video!
Wthhh your backyard is freaking HUGE omg wow. now i see the advantage of living in the countryside..my backyard is probably 1/10 of that. Can you PLEASE tour the backyard before summer is over? Please man.. lol.
Well, the panasonic is obviously much better, it's up to the consumer to decide if they want the 400-500 panasonic or the 250 canon. I'm gonna buy the canon tomorrow at my local Costco, since I don't want to spend a lot of money on a camera that I may not use. It will really depend on how successful I become with making videos for YouTube. The current videos which I have made are alright at best, but I'm focusing on making future videos more professional.
the canon is great for on-the-go things. and REALLY great for like concerts and stuff like that. Easy to get through "no camera" security and very small and compact and not very noticeable.
the panasonic has an amazing focus time but i like the canon because on the lens u dont have to keep your arm so far away and its still close cuz of the wide angelness
Panasonic's auto focus is faster! But otherwise, I think the 300HS takes the cake. More accurate, bright colors on the Canon and a more sensitive microphone.
The canon has higher contrast it seems but has very bad problems with picking up wind... The panasonic seems to have beaten the canon except for contrast and true colors...neat vid David+ did u film both at the same time or film after one another
most of the reason i think people prefer the canon is cos of the wide angle lens, the panasonic has a lot better dynamic range, which imho is more important, also snappier AF, still doesn't hold a candle to a canon DSLR.
For me the Canon has more color much more vibrant but its slow to focus vs the Panasonic which focus pretty fast, as for audio Canon was better on my speaker I could actually hear your voice through both my speakers where as the Panasonic it sound mono tone.
With a bit of color correction you would barley be able to tell the difference in the video. I gotta say I like the color from the Canon but the auto-focus is pretty slow. Maybe after the iPhone 5 comes out and I regenerate some of my money I'll pick one up (or maybe the iPhone 5 will have 1080p video at decent quality and I won't need to =P)
The Panasonic looks better and focuses better. The Canon Powershot looks great, but doesn't look as sharp and focuses a lit slower than the Panasonic.
Audio wise, the Panasonic wins. But the Canon is so rich in color compared to the Panasonic. I think audio doesn't matter visuals is obviously important as you can change/edit audio later in production.
do you usually do colour correction on your videos?
quality: canon
color: panasonic
close up: panasonic
audio: panasonic
portability/price: canon (obviously)
lens: panasonic.
speaking of the lens, i love the way how the light glares on the panasonics lens more than the canons. the first shot with the backyard looked beautiful on the canon but the wind was annoying. over all i think the panasonic is a better camera, but the colours are a bit dull.
it seems that the colors on the Canon are amazing... however the last 2 shots the one from the stairs and the one from the sunset the Panasonic is much better.
Awesome video David! I really still prefer your Panasonic HD-SD600K. I don't know why, but I just feel that a pocket sized camcorder can't be considered professional. :P

Much better quality than paying 400 dollars for a Panasonic HDC-SD600K. The Canon Pwershot Elph HS 500 has an even better HD quality than this one.
