I'm not an expert on this kind of music. I don't know how these songs sound when sung by the likes of Judy Garland. I don't know and care how they should sound and be sung according to those who call themselves the experts. All I know is that whenever I hear him sing one of these old songs I am impressed with how great his voice is and with his amazing ability to sing.
I agree Judy Garland is unique - but so is Rufus. And he is a great singer with a great voice too. This is just his interpretation of the song, and I think it is very good. This is not an easy song to sing and he tried to sing it as good as he could. This is Rufus's style of singing and it is damn good. So, next time you want to complain about his way of interpreting the song, please remember this is not Judy Garland personally but a great singer with his own style of doing it. Thank you.
He wasn't trying to emulate anyone. It was merely a tribute to Garland and appreciation for the song. He was giving the song his own unique style, with love and respect, as he does with all his covers. Go away haters.
This is what happens when the gay community supports mediocrity. It creates mediocre monsters who then create tragedy and not the Shakespearean kind girls... If it wasn't for my sense of humor this would have been all nails to a chalkboard. I'm not sure which is worse, the last note or his femme attempt at impersonating a woman who simply cannot be replicated... Someone slap this uppety-bitch!
@iterociter I'm sorry if you consider expression to be trolling... I suppose I should have commented. "this no good" or "me no like" or "he so good, me think he genius"... Look up the definition of "troll" @ urbandictionary... "you need education"... There's a difference between saying you don't like something as well as providing an explanation why and making random off the wall inappropriate comments. "Me hope you learn dynamic context soon"...
It's a wonderful homage to Judy, Rufus Wainwright is a performer of his own merit. Here he is paying loving tribute to the influence the immortal Ms Garland has had on his musical unbringing, I think it's wonderful.
GET THE HOOK! Who books the Nasally dude? These People should leave Judy Garland's songs to Judy Garland to sing! You know that not one person, not even Liza or Lorna can match the original. These ppl all try to hitch their wagons to Judy's star. Be a 1st rate version of yourself & not a 2nd rate version of somebody else. If people really want to pay tribute then let's all Lobby to have Judy's work back on TV i.e. Monthly SPECIALS. Let this Generation see what a Great entertainer really is
@NFitalianGuy how can you say that????? If you're truly a Jdy Garland fan you should let other fans like Rufus pay their tributes in their way, and Rufus albums are very different compared to this, so I don't think he's getting hooked to the Judy's star, I think he's paying a well deserved tribute to worthy inspiration.
Rufus Wainwright IS truly brilliant and talented, listen to his OWN records--THIS is just a 'labor of love' for him, and this IS the way these songs ARE...
I am sorry but this guy sucks . . . Judy is probably flipping in her grave!!! This is terrible. I wish a trolley would bust through the wall and hit him and make it stop.

okay, i like rufus wainwright and i think he's a genius songwriter... but does he have to be so pretentious during such a mediocre performance...? ugh
That this is strictly speaking perhaps a "mediocre performance" doesn't matter... this is fucking Rufus Wainwright singing a mind-bogglingly campy version of fucking Judy Garland's "The Trolley Song." Isn't that enough for you?
TheDaguerreotypist you call this performance pretentious? Have you ever seen musicals in New York, they are all like that. Have you ever seen Liza Minelli do this song? She's over the top drama. This is the way these songs are done, like it or not.
I am totally bias against him (knowingly) because it is very difficult to sing songs that were made into classics by stars of the caliber of Judy Garland. Therefore when I listen to his rendition, I find it quite mediocre.
I tend to agree with you. He's a gifted songwriter, I am amazed. But this has to cease, this is not his niche...and by the way I'm Gay. When he just sits down and sings his music isn't it amazing? I love him. All the best, Briar
I literally bumped into Rufus Wainwright coming out of a restaurant in Columbus, Ohio. He was heading to the theater where he was to perform, while I was heading into the restaurant to meet friends for dinner before seeing his show. I chatted with him for a few minutes, he was shy, charming, and not at all "The Star." I loved his show, and I love the sound of his voice in this video.
The very best example of another uninspired, unoriginal, idiot-vampire that should be given not a second thought. Its so sad that one continues to capitalize on Judys residual greatness.
rufus wainwright is a singer/songwriter from canada (maybe?) and he did a concert series of songs sung by judy garland, famous singer/actress from the golden age of hollywood. this song is from classic movie/musical "meet me in st. louis" it is such a great movie.
I am I guess to young and in the wrong generation to know alot about Judy, but Rufus's performance is to die for! It's like new Rufie songs for me and I LOVE it!
Among other things. He has to have been at least 35% ironic in his choice of Judy Garland for this concert. It's not like he's a terribly po faced person.

Okay, so we all want to be Judy Garland. And some of us get to stand up on a stage and live that dream. That doesn't make this a good performance. Shame, because he's a cutie.
I am serious. I'd love to be able to say that he's adding some new dimension to Garland's legacy by doing her music, but in fact, his performance comes across to me as a mildly embarassing though highly competent tribute. I do think he has a great voice and stage presence. He should do other material.
