the stepmother is really not in the begining of the movie but why would grace get a picture of just her and her father on it for a wedding gift. its her choice to give that as a gift . so i guess it didn't really matter if she gave her a gift or not. it is hard for some girls and boys to have a new stepmother in the family and sometimes not. it depends on how they all get along with each other.

This is (I think) why big people eat and eat. They get no real love or acceptance from their family or have no support, so they find comfert in food. I'm not fat nor am making excuses, but it is what it is. It's a shame. Lots of big people I know are very sweet, but their outer appearance is judged.
