2. Wirklich derbst taktlos von dir Beinemann. Auch wenn die Rakete nicht bemannt war, ist dein Kommentar im Video dermaßen unangebracht und respektlos.

no spreken ze deutsch stupid... folks, nobody died here. A test launch in 61 probably of unmanned Atlas rocket. Looks like intentionally destroyed as was prob heading off course. Still being launched in different versions. One delivered satellite on Feb 10, 2009. The first images are of a Saturn 5 moon rocket.

Beinemann should be banned just for raping a piece of film that was and still is one of the greatest flicks ever made... A German commenting in text balloons burn? How inappropriate is that?
This song is not called Koyaanisqatsi, it's called prophecies. There's only a very little difference between two songs. But Koyaanisqatsi takes place in the beginning of the movie.
This scene is the ending, and it represents the whole idea of the movie, watching it now a tenth time and it is still so crawly.
G. Reggio and Phylip Glass created one of the masterpieces of s. XX and of all times. The sad part of the story is that what they portray in the film, the abrupt and unavoidable fall of our civilitation, is today much closer than it was in 1980, and will occur during this century. It's not a wild profecy, it's just applying mathematics to our social and economic development vs resources available. The final scene of the film (this video) can't be more defining of what is to come soon
to me it's the journey and the inevitable fall. the lost of control, or maybe just the illusion of being in control. best scene in the movie. beautiful
When I saw this on TV, my cat (she was not looking at the TV screen before in her life) was staring at the TV screen all the time long when the rocket piece was falling down burning. It was a strange moment! Perhaps she felt, that I was so captured?
definately my favorite part of the movie, maybe even from the entire trilogy. to me it symbolises the exact opposite to the scene in 2001 Space Odyssey when the apes got to know how to use nature products as tools.that was the beginning & this can be the end.
If life out of balance? This is the ultimate statement offered by Phillip Glass and the others involved here. Was the explosion of the rocket somehow connected to the general disconnect we have with nature or was it merely a little expression that we all fall short of perfection.
Here are some facts: a Saturn 5 is shown at liftoff past the tower and then the scene switches to the first launch of Atlas-Centaur in May 1962. An insulation shield on the Centaur stage failed causing the Centaur to break up into a fireball followed immediately by the Atlas first stage. The debris shown in free fall is the Atlas sustainer engine still attached to the aft fuel tank. Great piece of camera tracking,
to me, the majority of this movie is a sarcastic praise as to what the technology of the world has given humanity. and then the whole thing ends with the director saying, look what all your wonderful technology has achieved. this is such a moving movie, deffinetly one of my favorites.
pretty lame. slow, inaudible, repetitive 'music' with nothing but a clip of a launch and debris. i've read the most recent 5 pages of comments and still have no idea what anyof you are talking about. How did i get here from Lennon's 'working class hero' clip?! who the heck is phillip glass, koyaanisqatsi, this lauch clip, some movie you're all talking about etc... . You all have such divergent, unrelated, takes on this clip it's clear this clip is of little value to anyone. only 52000 hits
it's a clip from a movie called koyaanisqatsi.. if you don't like it, then don't watch it. and everyone should know who Phillip Glass is, and at least to some degree have an open mind about movies and clips that doesn't make sense first time you see it.
This scene is probably intended by an unenlightened moviemaker to allude to Hopi texts or old Bible crap morals. -But every morning it has rained, - God lets me read pages in the only book he's ever written.
I see worms wriggling away on the ground. If they don't find good ground, they will crawl all the way back again, if they survive. Hundreds die. But it's how they spread and live.
To live, it's necessary to succeed. To succeed it's necessary to fail often.
This should be on one of those discs they send with space probes! I saw this movie at a filmfestival on an early sundaymorning with ten people in a huge theater...undescribable! This is also my favourite part, trial and error, not necessarily apocalyptical, we should just be aware. Our planet has survived worse then us.
I absolutely love this film, what I like more than the implied meaning is the meaning you can apply yourself.
For me, this part of the film really made me feel that we, as humans, will reach for the stars and that when you reach that far you also must be willing to fall a long way, even die in your quest for knowledge.
What makes this simple film the best is that your meaning is the true meaning, everyone is right and no one is wrong.
Really? You seem to think that the ending of the film is positive. Three Hopi prophecies are sung by a chorus just before the credits, one of which roughly translates as:
'A container of ashes might one day be thrown from the sky, which could burn the land and boil the oceans'.
The Atlas rocket shown in this scene is that container of ashes. Although Reggio has always said it is up to the viewer to decide for himself/herself what the film means...I think his message is pretty clear!
reggio probably. but aren't the translations of the hopi expressions given in the end title? i also think that the director's intention is pretty clear.
Naturally people are entitled to their own opinions, but I doubt the film was made with the sole intention of arousing individual & creative thoughts on it's meaning. The environmental and social message seems pretty clear, even without narration.

Reach into your pocket Xystus234 do you have any shiny silver coins in your pocket?
Because there is something there that I or 3 generations of my family have toiled in the dirt to produce.
I remember clouds blue SO2 rolling across the streets as boy, acid rain that poisoned the lakes for those coins.
I can show you places where men died digging shiny rocks out of the ground to make armour plate to kill other men... and coins.
If there is no humour in this then we are both mad.

Because if I do not find some humour in this I am left wondering what future we have .
If I do not try and see the lighter side of things I am forced to lay in bed at night knowing only picket lines and mindless toil in heavy industry.
And a bleak future of more of the same for less for my boy....
Maybe you can live withour hope and humour but I can't

An insulation shield on the Centaur stage failed causing the Centaur to break up into a fireball followed immediately by the Atlas first stage. The debris shown in free fall is the Atlas sustainer engine still attached to the aft fuel tank. Great piece of camera tracking,

And it all works so well with Glass' music...

had no idea...
when first watching this i was like... "wait...theres smoke coming from the rocket... and such a sad music... this cannot be good..."
2 seconds later it exploded...
jkobeh 3 years ago
Definitely a sad moment after 14 montths on the launch pad
and 54 seconds of flight. But Atlas-Centaur went on to a very
successful career launching satellites and lunar and planetary
probes.
artwleb 3 years ago 2
yes... tho when the rocket exploded (i bet) every one felt like... "wait... is that supposed to happen?..."
jkobeh 3 years ago
Well, I did not know what the title meant but once I saw this
Atlas-Centaur I knew what to expect. Fun to watch and see what you can learn from history.

my teacher showed us this video yesterday, it's amazing, you have to watch the whole thing to appreciate it's beauty
Mnemic07 3 years ago
to me, the majority of this movie is a sarcastic praise as to what the technology of the world has given humanity. and then the whole thing ends with the director saying, look what all your wonderful technology has achieved. this is such a moving movie, deffinetly one of my favorites.

I agree with you.

pretty lame. slow, inaudible, repetitive 'music' with nothing but a clip of a launch and debris. i've read the most recent 5 pages of comments and still have no idea what anyof you are talking about. How did i get here from Lennon's 'working class hero' clip?! who the heck is phillip glass, koyaanisqatsi, this lauch clip, some movie you're all talking about etc... . You all have such divergent, unrelated, takes on this clip it's clear this clip is of little value to anyone. only 52000 hits
immeohmyoh 3 years ago
this "repetitive 'music'" is known as minimalist music and only the intelligent people can understand it. this music is fantastic.
chucholuchocucho 3 years ago 5
it's a clip from a movie called koyaanisqatsi.. if you don't like it, then don't watch it. and everyone should know who Phillip Glass is, and at least to some degree have an open mind about movies and clips that doesn't make sense first time you see it.

So to me this scene is heroic.

This scene reminds me of The Tower of Babel, man rises only to fall forever.

What makes this simple film the best is that your meaning is the true meaning, everyone is right and no one is wrong.
puffherb 3 years ago 2
Although Reggio has always said it is up to the viewer to decide for himself/herself what the film means...I think his message is pretty clear!
ethanhunt72 3 years ago 2
I like my own meaning better. If he wanted to imply something he would have said it himself.
puffherb 3 years ago
How do you know? Mabey he just left it to everybody els to try to figure out. By the way, who are you talking about?
BrokenChair88 3 years ago
reggio probably. but aren't the translations of the hopi expressions given in the end title? i also think that the director's intention is pretty clear.
s0th0th 3 years ago
that would have made a real exciting film... 'I think the world is out of balance, the end.'
Everyone is not right if you look at the state the world is in, is Hitler or Pol Pot right? You must be on some strong drugs.
HumanFly73 3 years ago
I'm talking the meaning people put to the film, no interpretation is right or wrong.
I'm not sure what you are getting at, but ok.
puffherb 3 years ago
Naturally people are entitled to their own opinions, but I doubt the film was made with the sole intention of arousing individual & creative thoughts on it's meaning. The environmental and social message seems pretty clear, even without narration.
HumanFly73 3 years ago
well yeah...
the progression of the film dictates that, but the individual scenes are open to any opinion.
there is no argument here.

This comment has received too many negative votes show
I know this isn't really relevant, but does that guy sing "Koyaanisqatsi" throughout the WHOLE film??
silvertesh123 3 years ago
No. He isnt... in fact only in two parts of the whole film.

This is one of my favourite films ever, this and Baraka, this is better though.the rocket nose cone is the best bit of the film. amazing
thechemist01 3 years ago
The film is more of a spiritual happening than a real film. Its simply the most amazing part of art ever done in the 20th century.
