  • shit slash is better LOOLOL

  • espectacular!!!!!!!!!!!!

  • Gilbert IS a guitar virtuoso

  • I absolutely love these guys' sound

  • I love scott travis' style

  • the fact that paul gilbert is a monster does not mean that this version is better,in my opinion.

Notwithstanding this is a very good version

  • the priest created it, but the racer x is better gilbert is a guitar god!!!

  • @boud44 haha that's a good joke. Racer who? is better than judas priest. funny stuff.

  • @katkal3 he just said that Racer X's version of this song is better. I agree. I love what they did with this song all around.

No doubt Halford is a better all around vocalist but I do think Jeff sings this one better. Paul also really added to the song bigtime putting that arpeggio over the verse, and ofcourse him and Bruce together with the solo... And the drums that Scott lays down... Mmmmmmm, it is beautiful!

  • halford and martin wrote "Heart Of A Lion" to the sessions for "Twin Turbo", but not convinced, so he stayed out of the disk. Jeff Martin loved that theme and asked us, judas arrange the papers and halford gave him to record it with Racer X.

  • I dont like this!! one bit!!

Good song though but only with Halford on the mic

  • never forget Bruce Bouillet, he and paul were both shredding the same shit.

  • its strange to hear somebdy else sing a priest song..... not knocking the band, but its still strange. It sounds like it was written around the time od screaming. anybody know?

  • Singer has nothing on a 60 year old Halford even.

  • @Anjohl Does anyone? I would put Rob up against any vocalist and I'm sure he could crush them in every way. And I'm not just saying this as a fanboy, he has some fucking range, power, and charisma.

  • @JoeAuriun i just read your comment..would you have a listen to my vocals?

Ive covered some Judas Priest track...i would like to know what your thoughts are about them!! \m/

  • jeff does it better..

  • I am glad it's not rushed..perfect timing.

  • How this Judas Priest track never made it on any album I'll never know.

  • The demo's on the Metalogy boxed set, as well as Halford's version on "Live Inssurection." I hate to admit it, but I love Racer X's cover, because Paul Gilbert rules.

  • @laz4erin Yea I know, what I meant was it wasn't released on a proper album. Saw Gilbert live with Mr.Big in the 80's. He is sick.

  • @laz4erin Yep..what ever happened to Bouillet(sic)?

  • I think Bruce is actually a tech for Ibanez now.

  • @laz4erin That's a shame ;( He's better than that!

  • @demigodlike Bruce was in Epidemic, that had a major deal a few years agao and toured with Nickleback. I think he went by Bruce Adam on the CD but it was a big deal. He plays with Paul a lot now in Pauls band. He has put out some solo CD's.

  • I love this band but I can't stand when he shouts HEEAARTT. It sounds dreadful.

But anyway, Paul's guitar is flawless as ever.

  • Scott Travis is an animal on the drums! The human metronome... and such a cool guy too. I have seen him play pick up gigs for fun in VB at a small bar with a local band.. people didn't even know who he was but he rocked no matter what he played.

  • My God what a band!!!! Paul Gilbert is an amazing shreder and composer, and the rest of the band is so great too!!!!

  • haha at the beginning, the camera guy wondered who was playing and shines the light on Bruce then Paul

  • I think Sunlit Nights is a pretty good song. They had some good melodic tunes along with some serious ass shredding!

  • Racer X's version may be better but no matter how you cut it,Judas Priest wrote the song and you can tell just by listening to it that Racer X couldnt write anything as good as this. I love Racer X but they werent that great of songwriters.

  • Some of you have this partially correct! Rob Halford gave this song to Jeff Martin as a birthday gift as they were rumored to be dating at that time. This song was supposed to be featured on the Turbo album. What a gift!!!!!!

  • @blackguitar86 @blackguitar86 Jeff Martin has stated that his wife would highly dispute that he and Halford were 'dating'. This song was released on Racer X's second cd - Second Heat - excellent tune.

  • @alefacepay Dude, these days having a wife is either a phase or a attempt at what you think you are "supposed" to be doing. I am from LA and I have heard this during Racer X's club era in Hollywood. I also have friends that were going to-at that time GIT, they spoke directly to the band. They have heard things also. Could be BI? Whatever, great band and great song either way.

  • @blackguitar86 This tune was also released on Halford - Live Insurrection as an additional studio cut.

  • way better than priest version though.

  • icemanofrock, priest actually created a demo of this song, they just didn't release it. It is an original priest song covered by racer x. LONG LIVE PRIEST

  • Racer X fuckin own!

  • nice cover

  • your a fucking moron.......

  • your the moron.. if you didnt know this is a priest song.. they give them to racer x.. but it is from priest

  • If you actually buy the cd instead of downloading it, you'll see in the liner notes that the song was written by Priest, but they never put it on an album. Can't imagine why, it's a great song.

  • yes they did!...Judas Priest Metalogy album and Halford, Resurrection live :)

  • True, that, I should have specified. If memory serves, there is a demo version on the Metalogy collection, and Halford did record it for the Live Insurrection CD.

  • lol no

  • This is the reason I still live in the '80s!! Heart of a Lion, Soul of a Rocker. A live performance that Totally F'n Rocks!!! YEAH!!!!

  • jeff martin looks like glen tipton in this vid

  • man, these dudes were all in college when they did this. Could you imagine? If something you did something back in the day as a LOCAL band and then years later people hunt it down and study it and like it turns out you were setting the bar for rock n roll guitar? Legendary...

  • buen cover de judas priest

  • he is out of tune

  • This is the best version in my opinion.

  • Indeed

  • YEEEEOOOOW!!!!!!

  • i wish paul bought this guitar as his model, its a great looking guitar, rather than the f-hole RG style ibanez, his model is just a rg with painted f-holes, big deal.

  • Look, there are no better guitarists, there are favorite guitarists, so don't compare.

  • Nice to see Scott Travis on the drums;)

  • Paul is amazing but Bruce as well. His technique is amazing

  • Aren't we forgetting Becker/Friedman as probably the best duo ?

  • Nah, the best duo is Glenn Tipton/KK Downing, Judas Priest.

  • Becker/Friedman are awesome!

  • Is that just a statement, or is it supposed to be related to this video? Becker and Friedman were in Cocaphony together, this is Racer X with Paul Gilbert and Bruce Bouillet on guitar

  • fuckkkkkk man i love this song , and what about the guitar solo????????, damnnnnnnnnnn, i have to play this shxxx mannnnn

  • ni se conpara con rod halford

  • Gilbert looks like a bad ass witht the black leather! lol. Much better than that stupid white suit! Alice Cooper can pull off the white suit, but not paul. He just looked goofy!

  • But as a duo, Tipton and Downing are alot better.

  • The Priest version is way better than this.

  • who is the singer? Jeff Martin?

  • ...and he would go on to play drums in Badlands.

  • greaaaaaaaaaaaat song!!!!!!

  • Agreed with lakenormanusa.

    20 Years is quickly past.

The Racer X is my first version I listened to, and just've known that it's from Judas Priest, another favorite heavy metal band in my mind.

  • Metal God sings this stuff way better

  • I disagree.

  • Kk xD So Jeff Martin should be better than Rob Halford? Maybe in your dreams ^.^

  • No, the Racer X version of this song is better than Halford's.

  • Yeah, but the Priest version is better :P

And Halford is a way better singer than Jeff Martin.

KK and Glenn are a better duo than Paul and Bruce.

But Paul and Bruce kicks Halfords guitarists in his own band ^^

  • I love KK and Glen.... But you think they are better than Paul and Bruce??? Are you kidding or insane?

  • As a duo yes :) They are the best duo in the world.

    They invented the two-leadguitarthing.

Paul is on a another level than KK and Glenn when it comes to technique and speed, but KK and Glenn writes much better songs etc.

They have reached a greater succes with their bands than Paul has, more respected, called the Metal Gods etc.

But yeah, Paul is better when it comes to Guitarplaying.

  • Invented the duel lead guitar thing?

I guess you've never heard of Thin Lizzy.

  • Priest was first with that style :P

And Thin Lizzy are not Heavy Metal ^^

  • you're crazy. yes, Halford is a better singer. but when it comes to twin guitars, Racer X shits all over Priest on that one. I've never heard KK and Glenn Tipton play something that would outdo Paul and Bruce, and i own every Judas Priest album.

    so your opinion is null.

  • That´s because of Gilbert.

He is one of the best guitarists in the world.

Bruce seems to be a good player when he is with Paul, but he is just a normal player ^^

  • What is the matter with you! Better quality lead and song credits! They invented the twin heavy metal attack! These guys wouldn't have existed if it werent for Priest.

  • They would have existed, they just wouldn't have sounded the same.

  • But you're certain they wouldn't be around if JP wasn't around?

I'm sure they would have been around. They would just play different music.

    And kiddo, really?

  • I don´t think they would be around actually :P

  • That's nice.

  • Nothing special! Tipton and Downing tear these guys to pieces!

  • there are guitarists and there are shredders and the 2 can't be compared. its hardly fair. tipton and downing are good at what they do tho. theye wrote a good song here....

  • Thanks for the input. I just wonder how many of these bands would've existed if Priest hadn't brought Metal to the forefront.

  • Rock n' Roll wouldnt existed if Chuck Berry wouldn't copy the blues-piano licks that they play on the piano. We have to give credit to everybody. Priest is not all the heavy metal, and Led Zeppelin is not all the rock n' roll. Don't get me wrong I love Priest.

  • They probably would. But paul Gilbert is a great guitarplayer :P Theese guys wouldn´t exist without Priest xD

  • I think its kinda funny that Pauls vocals are so much louder than Jeff's on EVERY old vid ive seen of them =p

    This song rocks

  • 20 years seem to go by

in the blink of an eye.

  • Studio ver rox but RacerX are damn good live too. Someone is a little tipsy on the backupo vocals hehe but this rox.

  • Scott Travis on drums?

  • Yeap, think so ^^

  • thanks for posting!such a great song!

  • I've never even heard the original version of this song by Judas Priest but I'd like to. Racer X plays this song really good. I could see Ron Halford singing it.

  • Yeah, this song is a great cover :D The solo is cooler because they both plays it ^^

  • this rox !!!! but halford version rox too

  • Hell ya man, i luv these 80s vids too, i just bought a leather jacket and im gunna stud it up, i wish i was in the 80s so bad, just cause im in 2008 dosnt mean i cant dress like it. =)

Racer X rocks, keep rockin all u metal heads!

  • i'm only 15 and this is my tops 10 favorite songs!

its fun watching these old eighties videos.

  • Paul Gilbert is my idol.

  • Pure Heavy Metal. I love that twinsolo :D:D:D:D

  • heavy metal!!!!!!!!!!!! paul gilbert rules! better than the original version!! racer x rocks!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

  • this song is not racer x but..??

  • It is. It was written by Rob Halford but they were the first to record it.

Holy shit the vocals on this version are fucking insane.

  • great song....my prefer song...i love the ritm....and the groove...long life at true rock...paul gilbert dominate!!!

  • on of my favorite songs ever! the entro guitar riff is just insane!!!!!!!!

  • this is a judas priest song!

racer x is friend with judas!

    yea greates bands

  • this is an amazing fucking priest song , and a hell of rendition by Racer X , fucking great.

  • Rob halford was at this show. This is the country club in reseda. yeah priest wrote this song, but jeff says that it was given to him as a birthdasy present to record. I dont know how true that is because rob halford starting performing this with his solo band years later.By the way,Russ Parrish was the guitarist in "fight" he also was in "the electricc fence" with paul gilbert and then later in "the atomic punks" and now "metal skool" just a little FYI

  • This is at the Omni in Oakland.

  • Anyone fancy sending me an MP3 of this song? It's awesome!

  • only word on this video...Scott Travis kicks millions of asses anytime, anywhere......that drum kit sounds so loud! ROCK!

  • where did you get this concert footage?

  • wow this blows. halfords version is a million times better.. this singer has no range!

  • This singer is great Racer x shreds and comparing anyone to Halford in his heyday just shows how much you know about music nobody had Robs range not until Ripper Owens took over the reigns of being Priests frontman.

  • This THE best version of HOALion - then comes Halford - and then comes Priest. Bruce and Paul OWN this song, period.

  • WTF is going on in here!!! Too many thumbs down.

  • wtf, you call yourself paulgilbert, and write this shit, you're a fuckin' fool man

  • Man,take it easy - he was joking

  • Actually this was written by Rob Halford, Glenn Tipton and K.K. Downing. It was (I believe) presented to Racer X by Glenn for them to record, which apparently pissed Rob Halford right off!

  • Actually I read about this song that Halford gifted this song to Jeff Martin the singer on his birthday

  • No, it wasn't a gift at all! How could Rob give someone a song as a gift when he only owns 1/3rd of the publishing on it (and Glen & KK own the other 2/3rds)?! Jeff Martin, who was big buddies with Halford heard Priest's demo of 'Heart of a Lion' and decided to record the song with Racer X - WITHOUT telling Priest! When they found out they were PISSED OFF big time!!!

  • It was a gift from Halford to Jeff for his birthday, "Limon89" you're very right!

  • Halfie version is 10000's better

  • lol, dude someone marked your comment as spam.

    WTF!?!?!

  • racer x = leet.

  • this was actually meant for the ram it down album

  • Well, maybe RIA too, but it was made during the time of Turbo album, but I can't remember if the band didn't see it fit the album or if they just had too many songs for Turbo.

  • They recorded 19 songs for a double album (twin turbos), but I don't think the producers wanted them to release a double album. So they released Turbo with 9 songs, a lot of the remaings went to Ram it Down, the rest for the bonus tracks on the re-masters series, haeart of a lion went to Metalogy as a bonus, and two songs were never released.

  • i hear some strange backing vocals...who the hell is it? pretty good by the way

  • thats Paul

  • Ya Hannibal, Paul is Godlike without a doubt, but I used to cringe whenever he'd step up to a mic.

  • i cringe at you.

  • uhh.....good one

  • lol

  • lol - not raggin on Paul man. He's one of my faves. I just don't care for his singing. He and Bruce Boulliet (spelling) were insane together. Didn't the singer (Jeff Martin) end up playing drums in Jake E. Lee's band "Badlands" aftewards or was that a different Jeff Martin?

  • same guy, he still sings for Racer X though when they release albums

  • MoCatt: Didn't the singer (Jeff Martin) end up playing drums in Jake E. Lee's band "Badlands" aftewards or was that a different Jeff Martin?

Nope. Same Jeff Martin. He's played drums with Blindside Blues Band also.

  • OMG SO FUCKING GOOD!!!

  • i dont know why this song wasnt a major hit. the tune is incredible. i guess the record company didnt promote good enuff or sometihng.

  • Great video!

  • Judas Priest, song that should have been on a 1985 album or was going to be on the Turbo, imagine that song with the effects of songs like Reckless

  • Reckless is damn great song IMO. Turbo wasn't maybe very good album... though it has it's moments, but Reckless... it works every time!

  • This son has been around since Screamin' i believe

  • No. And btw Turbo's one of the best albums.

  • great upload.

  • this is Racer X man! here are the beginning's of Paul Gilbert career!!! RACER X RULES!

  • REUNION, REUNION, REUNION !! It's time for a Racer X reunion !! Shred it - make it happen !

  • who is the original version by?

  • good song. usually i don't really like gilbert, cuz he'S just fast and nothing else.

  • Racer X are the best!!!

  • racer x rules¡¡

  • PURE leather!

  • Great leathers!

  • yup...jeff martin was originally the singer for racer x before joining badlands as drummer replacing eric singer.

racer x was an amazing band...scott travis went to judas priest, paul gilber went to mr. big, and jeff martin to the aforementioned badlands.

  • dont forget John Alderete went to mars volta

  • Bruce Boulliet (spelling?) went to form "The Scream" with John Corabi (who ended up with Motley Crue for a bit). That was a great album I thought.

  • *edit* "The Scream" was a great album...not the Crue one lol

  • I love Racer X, and I can appreciate the precision, but the two-guitar solo thing gets old.

  • Is that Badlands drummer Jeff Martin on vocals?????

  • Yep, Jeff sang in Racer X before joining Badlands

  • But Scott Travis is way better

  • This is my favorite Racer X song. I've always wondered how the Priest version sounds, I'll have to track it down.

  • Priest is the version! anyways it kicks ass.. Halford does a better revision of it on Live Insurrection

  • I've never heard the Priest version, but the Racer X version from "Second Heat" kills Halford's version. Racer X plays it faster and more powerfully.

  • agreed, JP's version is not as powerful.

  • Do you have the judas priest version?
