@gothless I know of at least 4 origins of how the language was formed. The obvious one is an African dialect; mixed with English. Also touches of the Irish tone, and even German words i.e mager = skinny. The difference being; in the US there would have been only the English spoken, therefore limited to one language. Whereas in Jamaica, there have been mixing of cultures, for a very long time. I'm British of Jamaican heritage; mixture of African, Irish, and Syrian. Motto 'Out of many, one people'

It's always interesting to hear patois from someone you wouldn't exactly expect to speak patois. I'm Chinese from Brooklyn and I had Chinese friends Jamaica. You walk into their house and hear this old Chinese woman yelling, "Gaal, why you not clean up ti bat'room?!" It's a very dissociative feeling.

I always hate to admit that b/c it makes me feel very provincial.

I just wanted to let you know that Mr. Tony Hendricks is indeed a true Jamaican and had a popular Sunday Evening show called "Paleface Point of View". He is also very well known and is also funny and intelligient. I have never heard him curse before though because that programme was on CVM TV and had to be appropriate for all ages.
