  • Man, this video is a wonderful demonstration of devolution. The average musician nowadays is clueless compared to these guys. It's all a sales job, now, just about glitz and production. That's why it's mostly super-young people. Lady Gaga makes millions for rehashed disco, and lots of these kind of guys guys were lucky to keep their bills paid.

  • @UmbrellaFitzgerald of course they do! you should too if you want to play like this

  • @UmbrellaFitzgerald Or smack ??? but boy they can play.

  • Man, the drummer is INSANE. And the guy on the guitar looks exactly like Herb Ellis, I suppose it's him :)

  • @KacanuHa right, it's Herb Ellis

  • God, why they always include drum solo in a jam? Is this a circus? It's not a pleasant sound. Every time a heard drum solo, i wanted to just shoot the fuck off and set the drum set on fire.

  • That is outstanding!!!

  • Where does he put his sticks!!?? Jesus he's like a rhythmic kangaroo!

  • so is that Herb Ellis on guitar the late great.

  • yes!!!!!!

  • Lecciones de bateria

  • Love that hossst.

  • @damonfortune2 Norman Granz - producer of the Jazz at the Philharmonic concert series, founder of the Verve, Pablo, Clef and Norgran record labels. Co-produced the best jazz film ever made, 'Jammin the Blues', nominated for an Academy Award in 1944 (look for it on YouTube!). Fought segregation and racism on behalf of his artists, and insisted on equal pay for black artists years before the civil rights movement. Granz was instrumental in bringing jazz to the public at large.

  • @damonfortune2 @searcherboy don't overlook Benny Goodman, who I believe was the first major white bandleader to integrate his groups with Lionel Hampton and later Roy Eldridge, long before Norman Granz came along.

  • wow, that was some great drums! :D

  • Best drum solo I've ever seen. Best face I've ever seen.

  • Papa Jo dives into his solo at double time feel and just kills it. He simply steals the show and tune. His musicianship, accuracy, clarity of ideas, quickness, sound and the command of the instrument is to this day unfathomable and unsurpassed.

  • Jo Jones's moves reminds me on robots...

  • Who the fuck was that drummer???!!!

    BEASTIN'! :P

  • @kinzeUK Ah Jo Jones, cool. What a fucking hench drummer!

  • Yes, one of the greatest standards by an excellent group of musicians. But ole Joe Jones takes the cake on this one!~

  • Immense drim solo, and the trumpet before it, HOW do you get a trumpet to sound like that! (As a trumpet player, I want to know)

  • Ídolo.

  • hmmm .... serious ass kicking going on here....

  • Awesome! And what the blues..this is in Holland? Funny :) Such great stars in our 'little' country..way to go!

  • Flip Philips!!

  • @albertsystem it's Roy Eldridge!

  • That drummer is biblical, and would make a kick ass ninja.

  • @PopeWithDaScope he could have make a great sushi

  • FANTASTICO...

  • Jo Jones...just the greatest drummer ever!! even with Buddy Rich.

  • So that's where John Bonham had his ideas from ;)

  • That's what you call rhythm in blood! Yes, awesome!!

  • Fuck your trumpet player , that''s Papa Jo Jones....amazing.

  • Go Oscar! TY.

  • epic, and the best bit is that he himself enjoys it =)

  • Who disliked this? Are you crazy every solo in here is absolutely amazing from its range to rhythmic diversity and above all staying in the groove and feel.

  • i´m lovin him xDDD so geil ist das, der Schlagzeuger

  • Phil Collins on sax about 0:40

  • Roy Eldrige on trumpet?

  • Should list all the players!

  • Hallelujah that's some great music.

  • One of the funnest drum solo's I've ever seen!

  • Astonishing Jo Jones!

  • So, was Ringo the first one to hold the two sticks like a hammer?

  • papa jo jones !!

  • AWESOME!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

  • mahalia jackson prayer changes things

  • someone should really tell me the bad side of marihuana... i cant find anything when i see this! :)

  • @rodabanane I've smoked weed for 40 years, I've quit, and my life is better.. Im glad to be sober.. no one could have told me this while I was toking. SURE, ITS FUN! sbut being sober is more fun..you are really "PRESENT" in your life, .. You wont believe me, i know.. but its my opinion

  • @Doumbeck I agree, and it's hard to explain it to people that haven't stopped. There's always a rationalization....

  • @Doumbeck I always said that I did not want to go through labor pains for 8, 9 hours or more let alone have fun for over 3 or 4 hours.

At some point you have to be able to think clearly and to be more careful of your body as it gets older. But as of yet, I can not remember having any more fun sober than any not..

Where in Ma Halia Jackson are you hanging out? LOl

  • @Doumbeck Same here, more "present" after having stopped smoking weed.

  • @Doumbeck its ok youre thinkin like this, i really appreciate that you say what you think. its your opinion, and its ok!

in my opinion you only got one life, do the best with it, do what you want to do. and were doing exactly this :)

you have to see that ppl react different on drugs (nothing personal against you!). ive met ppl who cant manage weed and life at the same time, but there is also the other side. i smoke and have a nice, truthful life, making my gratuade and i enjoy it :)

  • @rodabanane There is my friend, same as most drugs - i dont regret smoking for over 12 years had a lot of fun times, but being sober really is as rewarding as it might not sound I am in total agreement with what doumbeck and others have said :) And that's no preachy goody-goody moral BS either. I don't advocate MJ neither do I abhor the use or user of it. Each to their own I say.

Back on topic, that drum solo is TIDY!! :P

  • OLD SCHOOL. simpy AMAZINNG DRUMMER

  • there's nothing like karate chopping the drums! wicked solos all around

  • This ends with an unusual drum solo by Jo Jones. Notice the second floor tom. Herb Ellis is on guitar.

  • Jo was about the only drummer i've seen to use two floor toms, one on each side. Makes for some interesting concepts, especially for soloing.

  • at 2:41 is he saying "nigga"...!?....It sounds like it....what do you think?

  • @enakrium I think he does. That seems like something you'd hear more in modern drum corps, not on an old jazz recording. But there it is.

  • i love his smile hahaha

  • When it's 7 people, it's not a "trio". But very cool drum solo.

  • you know, I'm not a big fan of drum solos but that was awesome!

  • Bless you for posting this. WOW!!!

  • Wow. I turn my head for 4 seconds and I was like, "Wait! Where the fuck did his sticks go?"

  • get out your soap, douche bags

  • I hoped that the drum solo would never end...

  • where is there? why カタカナs are seen on the wall at the bigining of this film?

  • What is the writing in the background at the beginning of the film?

  • That drum solo is literally amazing. hahaha love his left arm at 3.28!

  • @Timmyboy1717

hahaha shit i didnt notice that

  • love joe jones, always have. Thanx jon. tony

  • Jo Jones says "Nigga" at 2:42

  • trumpet player rips!

  • Papa Jo Jones is Buddy Rich who found God.

  • Lol at trumpet solo... Amazing Drum solo!

  • TRUMPETTTT!!!

    LOVE IT!

    DRUUUMMMZ! CRAZY!!!

    AAAAAAHHH! pooped mah pants.

  • Roy Eldridge = Certified Badass :-)

  • Whoa is that Nat at the end?

  • @achiappa , YES! I THINK IS AN APPARITION! :D

  • Now thats what I call Karate drums. I some how don`t think Chick Webb had an influence there ! ;-) Wonderful stuff !

  • oh my good the drummer is the best AMAZING

  • the biggest trio ive ever seen

  • @lawlerable one of the smartest comments i've ever seen.

  • @lawlerable it's a quartet-quintet

  • @lawlerable it's a quartet-quintet....hahahaaa...they were fantasticccc!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

My God you were with them ...live?

    God bless(ed) you!!!

  • jo jones...one of the last swing era greats. classy guy and admired by his peers. original drummer with count basie. paved the way for bop drummers in the late 40's...but never really latched on to the way bop drumming was orchestrated, maybe he didn't want to maybe he couldn't???? wound up teaching at a school he co-founded in NYC in the early to mid 60's. VERY cool drummer and word has it a super nice man.

  • Great stuff...

But they're not a trio surely?!

  • ........holy shit......i thought i could play the drums!!!!!

iv jus been shat on haha

  • Bwa ha ha, Papa Jo showin' us how it's done!

  • who is the trumpet player?

  • @pamirs94 Roy Eldridge

  • Roy Eldridge

  • @pamirs94 Roy Eldridge

  • @pamirs94 i think it is Roy Elridge

  • @pamirs94 Sounds like Roy Eldridge

  • That drummer is madness.

Why have I never heard of him?

  • Most drum playass today would need two pairs of sticks two bass drums and still would not come near the musicality of two bars here ,what has happened to the approach to music in the last twenty years -get real..

  • DRUMMER KICKS ASS !!!WHAT A SONG!

  • My fave version of C-Jam Blue is 1964 live gig in Tokyo with the OPT. I had the album in college. Could kick myself for not hanging onto it.

  • everyone should have that much fun at their "job"

  • By the time they got around to the drum solo, the hairs on my body were standing up.

  • Incredible Jo Jones!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

  • this video should be obligatory shown to every travis smith fan.

  • why is it in D flat instead of C?

    did someone speed it up?

  • The whole episode is 1/2 step higher. I noticed that years ago transcribing some of the music from this Nat King Cole episode. I have no idea why.

  • Whos the trumpet player? that was great

  • Roy Eldridge.

  • Hi all

This drum solo should be a reminder to everyone who wants to go and get the latest drum gear.....you have to have the skill in the first place..........this requires hours of commitment and dedication and natural talent.

Spend the time not the money and these skills can be reachable !

  • puro vangelo

  • Why has the video been sped up slightly?

  • its hasn't. If you watch many videos of this era they all look slightly choppy and sped up. this is due to lower frame rates than we are used to today. yes, those musicians COULD play that fast. without the aid of a computer.

  • This is why he is THE PAPA! Some times his moves remindes me of Bruce Lee's precision! What a treasure! I am watching this EVERY DAY!

  • thats more than likely the most creative drum solo i'm ever going to hear or see

  • money jo jones!

  • wow.. I didn't know there were that many different sounds you could make on just a snare drum, this has changed my perspective on drums...

  • WOW
