@morrissounds This song's been in my head for 17 years. I remember being in a band when I was a kid picking this apart. So catchy, simple but textured. What a great time for music.
To morrissounds. I am from Costa Rica and back in the 90's I used to hear this song and I was amazed of that unique sound you guys created. When I finally got the album on cassette I just couldn't stop listen to it. I knew Dig was about to release a new album a few years ago, but while reading at the comments on this video I just realized it is true! Thanks for rock again!!
I've got to tell you 'bout this guy called stateshirt. He made a beautiful version of this track. I found stateshirt via mastamic, and I found this great band through stateshirt, and so on, and so on..
Anyways, check out stateshirt. It's worth the time, I promise.
Hey it's Jon Morris of dig, thanks for all the great feedback!scotts still
Working on the new record from 2007,everybody's so busy&we all live in different cities,it took awhile to lay down all the tracks.in the meantime we rerecorded the first cd&are ready to release it to remind people about the band then release the new one.we have Johnny Cornwell back in the band so all original triple guitar attack! Meeting with scott&johnny Tuesday to work on artwork. Stay tuned.
What happened to the 2007 news of a new CD? I love it when old bands from the 80s or 90s get back together. I was born in 75, which makes me lucky enough to be an 80s and 90s kid :)
The self titled album by Dig rocks! I find it very hard to listen to this album without getting stoned or wanting to get stoned. I'd love to meet Scott Hackwith & play drums for Dig. I love to hang out in the woods during sunset, wearing a flannel shirt, grunge shirt & jeans while listening to this album & getting completely baked.
I won't ever forget being retarded high (back in high school, npi) with a couple of friends of mine. They were both like, "Man, I wish I could here that song 'Believe'." I was like, "Maaaan, that's a sick tune. Lemme go get it." 5 minutes later I return with the Dig s/t, pop that jawn in, and start blasting this song! The other guys: "What the fuck is this man?" Me: "'Believe'. By Dig. Duuuh!" Them: "We were talking about Lenny Kravitz, man." Me: "You guys are idiots." True story.
Dig was such an amazing band, swept up in the music industry's rush to sign anything with guitars in the wake Nevermind. They released two other albums, Defenders of the Universe, and Life Like throughout the end of the 90s. Scott Hackwith, the main creative force behind the band now works as a producer out in California. Look him up on Facebook and send him a message of support. He's been casually working on another Dig record on and off for some time now. The world needs to hear it!
Didn't they have another tune that got a lot of MTV and radio play other than this one. Thanks for posting. I love the 80s, but I can't deny the gems out of the 90s like DIG. Both decades rocked.
I've owned many copies of this cd over the years since it came out. All but my first i have found at random music/pawn shops. I just in fact bought another copy like a week ago. For a band no one seems to really remember there CD keeps showing up.
@WAIATA4U hell, i remember when Andrew WK came out with the "I Get Wet" album. i also saw it in the clearance bin at the Great Escape maybe 2 weeks after it was officially released.
" Saw them in Olympia back in the mid 90's. I got to go on the tour bus and smoke out...Scott Hackwith kept getting shocked on the mike when he was singing so they crushed the rest of the set just music only. I was so killer ! "
es una rola super genial, tuve el disco y me lo robaron, me dolio tanto la neta, definitivo, genial rola noventera, alternativo 100% yeah yeah yeah!!!!!!!
I've been trying to look for the video of "Unlucky Friend" forever. I bought the Rock Video Monthly Alternative 1994 release in hopes to finally see it, but the tape was accidentally erased during processing. Talk about total FML. At least I was refunded.
@benjaminiriarte it was self titled...but i believe it was released on radioactive records. i had to replace my cassette and found it easily at a used cd store
This whole album had songs that should have been "HITS." Not sure why this was the only one that made the charts and MTV. Maybe the band themselves weren't into making videos.

Hum was so much more than a one hit wonder...sadly the rest of the world didn't think so, one of the most amazing and hands down most underrated bands ever.

what do you want? some bandsd just captured the feeling without really tasting commercial success. If anyone out there remembers a band called SEED then they can appreciate a great alt rock band from the mid 90's that never got the credit they deserved.
My god, what is it about this song and the trigger of such distinct memories?! You all are reciting the very same thoughts I had. This song IMMEDIATELY takes me back to a very fun time in the early 90s when I was just getting into music, having a TON of fun and remember waiting for this video to come back on MTV, time after time, when it was a Buzz Clip. This song is hypnotic in its ability to trigger memories, and apparently many of us feel that way. Awesome song!
Man, I couldn't have said it better than that. I was a senior in high school back in september '93 when this album/video was released, during the whole alternative rock revolution. This brings me back to a time of youthful idealism. hanging out after school and partying, planning our future, never once stopping to realize we were experiencing the best days of our lives.
I really don't know why I always see so many used copies of this cd in record stores. It's one of my most memorable one that I resort to when I want to remember the great times I had back in the early '90s. I luv 'em
Sometimes even though a song is a hit, it still doesn't sell as well as the record company thought. They made just too many of these darned CDs. They probably thought this band was going to be the next Nirvana. Not quite. Anyway, that's why you see them all the time in the "cut-out" bin, which is where they put "damaged" product. Of course, the product is purposely damaged so they can sell it cheaply... usually a machine-made sawcut in the case, or a hole punched in a sleeve (less common).
I remember seeing this video once and maybe hearing the song at least twice on FM Radio. I actually bought the CD brand new in a pawn shop while browsing there with a close friend of mine. I recently ripped the CD tracks over to my MP3 player and I'm frequently listening to it.
The guitarist's use of Wah and additional effects is addicting. Makes me want to drag out my Epi LPS II, Crate amp and Boss GT-8 and make some noise.
Finally!!! I found this song, I´ve been looking for it like crazy!!! You have no idea!!! I remember it from the time I was like 15 or 16, saw the video a few times but I didn´t remember the band´s name, all I remembered was "believe" and part of the chorus and that it was from around 94 or 95. I found it!!!
mutedisease same here! I had this song on a vhs tape and taped over it by accident about 10 years ago. I only remembered Believe too. I somehow found it after googling hundreds of sites. I wish I could get the song on I-tunes though.
yeah, I googled it many times also, but all I could get was other songs named Believe, and since I didn´t remember the bands name, nor the lyrics, I had to go over all the lyrics looking for the "why dont you believe, believe in your" which was all the lyrics I remembered. But we found this hidden gem finally huh.
Wow, this song must have had the same effect on everyone. I had the beginning bass line stuck in my head for about a decade and finally found the song again a few years ago by doing research on the top 20 alternative tracks for every month from '95-'96.

Thanks for posting this! I still break out this CD for road trips to the beach back home where I used to blaze up and play it repeatedly when it was a new release.
Agreed on how delphonic6 said it's like they never existed, sad though...
The coolest thing about this video: none of their guitars are plugged in. I'm pretty sure it was intentional -- barely audible comments like "I know you guys are listening" are buried deep in the mix all over this album.
@shaunfossett Takes me back to 1993, when the CD was released. I went to the 1993 Earth Day show for The Edge in Dallas. They played there. I used to drive to High School , my senior year, blasting this CD in my car. You want to do something really cool? Go back to the same location you were when you would listen to the CD. Then play the CD again while you're there in your car. And you'll experience MAJOR FLASH BACKS. Careful though, you might bring back feelings of old flames :)
I saw this video once in '94 i think. Then they played this song on the old Jon Stewart show on MTV(remember that one??) anyway these guys were awesome. guitar triple-threat. then i never heard or saw anything from them.
amen to that. i'm proud to have been in high school during the 90s. there was no iPOD yet, can't even afford CDs so i really had to buy the albums on cassette. Stone Temple Pilots, Smashing Pumpkins, NIne Inch Nails, Soundgarden, Nirvana, Radiohead, Blind Melon, Pearl Jam, Alice In Chains, Porno for Pyros etc... those were the days when you get excited by the records and cant wait to get home and strap in you headphones and listen to it from start to finish.those were the days. the 90s ruled.
It's not 'the 90's' it's youth. Every generation sees their past as better than the present - although I do feel that quality in general has been on a steady decline since the 40's, it's an ability to search for and to be open to finding new things that will allow you to enjoy music (life) as you did in your youth.
i get your point, but i disagree. my father and i appreciate music from different eras as long as it sounded good to us. so you really can't say that i'm stuck in that period just because i glorified having been a part of it. he's a baby boomer and i'm a gen x-er and we isten to anything from mozart, miles davis, beatles and nine inch nails. i look at the current scene and al i see is utter crap. sure there's bands like the white sripes but in totality today's scene is probably the worst.
Dungen, The Blue Van, The Bees (all 3 much better than the white stripes) Sharon Jones/Dap kings, LCD Soundsystem, Ulrich Schnauss, Cut Copy, Doves, Justice, Daft Punk, Fleet Foxes, Mgmt, - shit, I could go on and on.
So of course, if you're watching MTV and listening to mainstream radio, your just getting shit - Checkout kexp org - 2nd most popular independent/non-prof radio station in america. It's just about staying connected, and not just taking what's thrown at us by the major labels.
both your points are valid. but i believe the comparison here is not about indie music (which has been also present during the 80s and the 90s) but the era that produced the most tolerable pool of popular music. 'alternative' music belongs to the 90s and it really was pop. sure it was shown in mtv but even today's generation are floored by the likes of nirvana when compared to most so-called rockbands out there in heavy rotation when they see 'smells like teen spirit' for the first time.
Well, Nirvana was a phenomenon, a 'Beatles' of sorts; a band that simultaneously defined and represented the relevant youth culture of their times. Sure, this decade hasn't had it's 'Beatles' but neither did the 80's or 70's. If speaking of popular music, Dig was far from popular, regardless of its 15min on the radio or MTV - no longer the salient barometer of popular music, having been replaced with the internetz; now both main trafficker & arbiter of what is considered popular. Good Convo :)
... oh man, thank you for posting!!! ... listening to the song right now and wanted to find the video for it ... i'm glad they are coming back around with a new cd ...

Thanks alot, jeng3000, I always wondered what the saw marks on some were from. Also great insight into the market!

Just found this cd again after having thought I lost it years ago. The whole album is fucking fantastic.

I found it!!!
mutedisease 2 years ago
mutedisease same here! I had this song on a vhs tape and taped over it by accident about 10 years ago. I only remembered Believe too. I somehow found it after googling hundreds of sites. I wish I could get the song on I-tunes though.
pfjk47 2 years ago
yeah, I googled it many times also, but all I could get was other songs named Believe, and since I didn´t remember the bands name, nor the lyrics, I had to go over all the lyrics looking for the "why dont you believe, believe in your" which was all the lyrics I remembered.

I got the album back in 1994, but on tape. Then I sold it five years ago. I really ought to find me a copy of the album on CD.

Careful though, you might bring back feelings of old flames :)

amazing rolling drums...drivin me mad. yup....the 90's are over... since then, music turned sour to me. i sure miss the good old days.
jeromex1x 3 years ago
amen to that. i'm proud to have been in high school during the 90s. there was no iPOD yet, can't even afford CDs so i really had to buy the albums on cassette. Stone Temple Pilots, Smashing Pumpkins, NIne Inch Nails, Soundgarden, Nirvana, Radiohead, Blind Melon, Pearl Jam, Alice In Chains, Porno for Pyros etc... those were the days when you get excited by the records and cant wait to get home and strap in you headphones and listen to it from start to finish.those were the days. the 90s ruled.
burnikshrapnel 3 years ago 3
I totally agree, look for PAW - Jessie, it was one of my favorites.
gonzalocampos 3 years ago
It's not 'the 90's' it's youth. Every generation sees their past as better than the present - although I do feel that quality in general has been on a steady decline since the 40's, it's an ability to search for and to be open to finding new things that will allow you to enjoy music (life) as you did in your youth.
allrequiredfields 3 years ago
i get your point, but i disagree. my father and i appreciate music from different eras as long as it sounded good to us. so you really can't say that i'm stuck in that period just because i glorified having been a part of it. he's a baby boomer and i'm a gen x-er and we isten to anything from mozart, miles davis, beatles and nine inch nails. i look at the current scene and al i see is utter crap. sure there's bands like the white sripes but in totality today's scene is probably the worst.
burnikshrapnel 3 years ago
Dungen, The Blue Van, The Bees (all 3 much better than the white stripes) Sharon Jones/Dap kings, LCD Soundsystem, Ulrich Schnauss, Cut Copy, Doves, Justice, Daft Punk, Fleet Foxes, Mgmt, - shit, I could go on and on.
So of course, if you're watching MTV and listening to mainstream radio, your just getting shit - Checkout kexp org - 2nd most popular independent/non-prof radio station in america. It's just about staying connected, and not just taking what's thrown at us by the major labels.
allrequiredfields 3 years ago
both your points are valid. but i believe the comparison here is not about indie music (which has been also present during the 80s and the 90s) but the era that produced the most tolerable pool of popular music. 'alternative' music belongs to the 90s and it really was pop. sure it was shown in mtv but even today's generation are floored by the likes of nirvana when compared to most so-called rockbands out there in heavy rotation when they see 'smells like teen spirit' for the first time.
komunista94 3 years ago
Well, Nirvana was a phenomenon, a 'Beatles' of sorts; a band that simultaneously defined and represented the relevant youth culture of their times. Sure, this decade hasn't had it's 'Beatles' but neither did the 80's or 70's. If speaking of popular music, Dig was far from popular, regardless of its 15min on the radio or MTV - no longer the salient barometer of popular music, having been replaced with the internetz; now both main trafficker & arbiter of what is considered popular. Good Convo :)
