I had to laugh at the comments praising security at American airports prior to 9/11. I traveled many times before 9/11, and the security for domestic flights was stupid, and non-existent. It consisted of baggage handlers asking silly questions like "have you given your baggage to anyone you didn't know". What the hell am I going to say, "Yes, I gave my stuff to a stranger"? Security staff talked amongst themselves and didn't pay attention to the screens. So-called "Security" - laughable.

I was at school 500 meters from Tower 1 at the time. Since TV coverage blacked out, those without a view from windows only heard/felt the collapses. Even after seeing the dust as we evacuated later, it was simply hard to believe the buildings could've collapsed. Most still hoped the dust was merely obscuring the towers from view. Only an hour later, after asking someone on the street, was the truth I had been dreading confirmed. It seems obvious now, but no one expected this could ever happen.
