Really one of the most beautiful scenes depicting violence I have ever seen - you almost forget that they are in a battle to the death. It's a dance, it's art, it's poetry.
The music chosen for this movie is the greatest part of it. It's just astounding how awesome to music fits to the scenes. You would think it's made just for the movie.
Only complaint I had about this was that it was too short. For all of O-Ren's past and her standing as this killing figure, I wasn't completely convinced of it here. Otherwise, it's absolutely fucking gorgeous.
This fight would of been better if it had been shot wider when they were swinging the swords. I saw the making of, and the choreography for this fight was awesome. But the fact that the camera is too close to see anything fucks that up. At least the sweet music is there.
From the point where the fight first starts, to the last blow Beatrix makes that chops off the top of O-ren-ishi's head comes out to exactly 4 minutes and 59 seconds, just under 5 minutes. Which is ironic because before the fight O-ren warns Beatrix that if she didn't save her energy that she may not last 5 minutes.
Anyone who doesn't get that this fight scene is about way more than swords clashing isn't paying attention.
It's like the difference in light saber duels in the classic Star Wars trilogy versus the shitty prequels.
The unspoken dialogue between these two characters, as conveyed by duel, is what's important. I've had this debate before, that nobody can tell me that O'Ren Ishii didn't know she was going to die here. This duel was her penance and she knew it. Amazing scene...
To me, I find this sword fight artistic. It's not meant to represent any extravagant moves, they want to show the beauty side of martial art... like a dance. Graceful and dignity.
Exactly, the first person i hear to say something reasonable in this aspect... Everyone is saying, oh no this is not the best sword scene ever? Anyways... Thanks for your comment;)
@Chidbin You've watched way too many movies depicting ridiculously unrealistic swordfights that go on for 20 minutes. Most sword fights between people actually trained and sparring or doing tournaments are over in a few minutes tops, and most of that time is positioning.
i dont think its the best ever sword fight scene its one of the best. Example, Sword fight in Troy and Sword fight in Die Another Day rank up there i think both of those are better than this one
Yeah the description is subjective, the best sword scene in my opinion. There is not a "best sword fight ever" objectively speaking. I uploaded the footage and i write what i want to write;)
@Naota1984 Yes you do, and instead of answering you with veiled sarcasm, I'll recommend you watch Crouching Tiger Hidden Dragon, the series A Game of Thrones, among others, they have great sword fighting scenes ;)
Crouching Tiger Hidden Dragon is one of my favourite films of all times. I watched it like 10 times or so and the same with others like Hero, The House of the Flying Daggers, Samurai films by Kurosawa, Lady Snowblood.. etc. I know what i'm talking about man... Peace
@Naota1984 I enjoy all those movies as entertainment but the fighting in them was not to be taken as realistic by any stretch of the imagination. It was like fighting: the Chinese comic book superhero version.
@altheathepirate This is definitely the best duel scene I've seen in a movie. Not for the specific techniques (which judging on that basis most people would pick stupidly unrealistic movies) but for its style and presentation.
@spfann1 Don't let Me Be Misunderstood by Santa Esmeralda. You should see The Good The Bad The Weird to see this song used in a very extravagant manner.

Besides Pulp Fiction pretty much the only good movies both Uma and Lucy star in. They should stick with Quentin, he brings out the best in them.
