I'm not so convinced by chance and evolution.......

it's the work of the almighty

  • @bigpurple100 ..... yes the magical being told them that a bird will eat them if they dint learn how to find shelter

  • Damn vegetarians killing the world!

  • does it instinctively know how to do that? :( all humans do are instinctively suck on nipples.

  • hes an artist so talented, i cannot paint thats in windows paintbrush...

  • wow caterpillars will rule the world

  • if its any insect that is going to rule the world, its going to be ants.

  • you're both wrong, it'll be cockroaches unfortunatly :(.

Their adaptable to anything, and even when frozen, they'll start kicking once the ice thaws out.

  • ants are *far* more successful than cockroaches

  • ants have organisation, cockroaches just wander around, just like the armies of early men, undisciplined armies will be cut down by armies who march as one

  • wow

  • Wow.. didn't know catepillars are so smart!

  • All this work for safe eating and you say "instinct" .. Instinct tells an animal to stay together to look more than a prey, it tells to eat meat and run as fast as you can on the weak one to not starve to death ..

But is it really correct to call it instinct when you clearly can see it's more than a primal need ? When there's a strategy, a plan, you can't just tell me "it does it's thing and that's all".

Even a DNA transmitted method to stay alive deserves it's title : Intelligence.

  • if its a strategy, its not an instinct? i guess why wolves and lions hunt using strategies of flushing prey while another in the hunting party flanks the victim. these hunting strategies are still present in dogs and have been modified for sheep herding. intelligence is when u understand what ur doing. a baby instinctively starts sucking for a good reason, do u think the baby even knows what milk is the first time, it just have the taste imprinted genetically to be associated with endorphins.

  • I understand what you say but I just don't use the same words for the same idea.

I just don't like the word "instinct" because it refers too much often about primal reactions.

But you are right, we can't call it intelligence but it's too rough to call it instinct either.

You breathe even in your sleep but you never learned to do it, it's a part of what I'd call genetic intelligence instead of instinct .. but only because it's more than a "feeling".

Bah I don't know if I'm clear enough..

  • incredible...

  • It cuts a pleat.... wow

  • i love creatures and david attenborough. if you write to david you could get a hand written letter from him. i wrote to him asking for a autograph and he replied. i love his shows

  • whoever thumbs down a comment because it has the word god in it is a dumbass

  • I'm an atheist--and I agree. People should be free to believe whatever they choose, and that includes believing in God.

  • thanks, if only i got that respect from other people on the internet sooner, i might still care about religeous shit like this.

    great video

  • hope you don't mean you allowed people on the internet to sway your beliefs.

  • amazing

  • what was all that black stuff? caterpillar poop?

  • no that was the leaf that it cut out its two leaves so it darken due to less lighting and when it lightens up that means that captipllar ate that part of the leaf

  • clever

  • I'm so amazed at how they manage to film all this? Must take many hours of hard work.

  • OMG! That was amazing! and i've always wondered why a caterpillar always did that when i see one. Now I could die happy!

  • There are many shelter-buidling techniques but I haven't seen this one before! If you like butterfly and moth lifecycle videos, stop my by channel or website. JCMDIdotCOM

  • i love lamp

  • ha ha ha

  • The Caterpillar looked like a gummy worm, mmmmmm

  • Wow!

  • Its known as INSTINCT, which is knowledge transmitted from generation to generation. And it's not a form of intelligence

  • glorious.

  • quality

  • It's mind boggling. As the caterpillar hasn't learned how to create that little cover, the impulse must be contained in the very fabric of its being. From whence comes that impulse. From its ancestors? Is the impulse in its DNA? In its mind?

  • ahh thats like the impulse to mate or eat i agree where do they come from??

  • excuisent

  • polpo

  • interesting

  • This caterpillar also does house renovations and other handyman jobs around the forest.

  • I love this guy. I watched countless hours of this stuff as a kid. It really shaped me.

  • ive seen this video in biology class. very cool stuff. also there is one blant that traps bugs and even small rodents in to a cafe like ballon filled with water that drowns them and then the plant digests them. sometimes they find full sized rats in them

  • Dude! This is how crop circles are made...

Do these things eat cotton...cause my socks are disappearing.

    CT

  • evolution... yeah right

  • Very interesting

  • Smart little wiggler!

  • David Attenborough! He is a real ro-model to me, Not like anybody else. He knows so much about nature and would never do anything to harm it! un-like Paris Hilton and her gang of swabby chicks who think everybody loves them

    -Cookeh xx

  • fantastic. We shouldn't be causing so much damage to the natural world; the natural world is perfectly capable of doing that itself.

  • This is a good video segment. It's very informative, quick, and entertaining. Thank you BBC, these are perfect for youtube. And thank you for red dwarf to, good show.

  • David Attenborough had so many wonderful nature programs that aired in the US on PBS - The Living Planet, Life on Earth, etc.
