The law is very clear that you are not allowed to wear that type of shirt. It doesn't matter if it is for or against prop. 8. You just can't wear it. You were bringing up a topic that could have been left dead so you did make a mistake. One kid did that at my school and he got kicked out of the classroom by a teacher who has taught for 30+ years and knows the system. He actually is a homosexual.
@radagastthe3rd how is it clear? in preceding cases it was made quite clear that students Do not leave their First Amendment rights outside of the school. my shirt simply expressed an opinion in a peaceful manner that brought about no disruption throughout the day. i was perfectly in the right.
@crutches13 um...as you discussed later the word "hate" is a strong word that obviously sets people off on an already VERY emotional topic. It did not cause disruption earlier in the day because no one wanted to comment on it before. I'm sure many people went on quietly disagreeing with you which is a good testament to what I was saying about peaceful disagreement.
From a legal perspective you are incorrect about BRINGING a tape recorder to school. You do not have the legal right to bring it at all even if you don't use it. Imagine if someone brings a gun to school and doesn't use it. Everyone can see that that is a violation of the law. The same concept applies. I am VERY surprised that that was not confiscated but I do applaud the fact that you confessed and apologized to the school.
@radagastthe3rd yes it was wrong of me to even think of bringing a tape recorder, it however is not illegal to posess one at school. what if i wanted to tape a class lecture? with the teachers consent of course. guns are weapons. a tape recorder is not. it may violate privacy but it does not present an imminant danger.
@crutches13 I'm not exactly sure why they are outlawed but I think it is not the same type of danger as a gun. A gun can kill you. A tape recorder can be used for invasion of privacy, blackmail, or whatever. They have been outlawed for a reason. Most people wouldn't even want to bring it. I think cameras are also illegal at school but I would have to check.
@radagastthe3rd if cameras and tape recorders were outlawed cell phoens would not be allowed at school seeing as most are equiped with both of those these days.
@crutches13 Again I am not sure about the camera law. Cell phones are not allowed at my school but you are allowed to BRING them to school because so many kids have a definite NEED for them to get picked up or for good reasons like that. The school has the right to make sure that children get all the way home safely. (You are under the school's protection until you cross your doorstep.) Cellphones are 100% banned from classrooms.
You should have left the t-shirt on. Big mistake. If you don't stand up for what you believe in then you will lose it. At the same time, consider that the teacher wasn't discriminating but peace-keeping?
oh my god. that is so stupid. it can only REALLY be divisive or hateful or whatever when your "group" is larger or more powerful than the other group. if a gay person spay paints the word "straight guy" on someone's house, it wouldn't be a hate crime, just vandalism. now if a straight man were to spray paint "homo" on a gay man's house, HOLY SHIT. everyone would FLIP OUT.
ive read some of the comments on the articles that you gave the link for and its really shocking how ignorant people are. im very glad there are still people who understand what is right vs what is wrong
i stand behind u the whole way its ok i agree prop 8 is very stupid

What does the teacher want?! Prop. 8 does = hate. Someone should make a proposition to fire brainless teachers.
