Great series. It isn't too often that you get to follow the development of a single big cat, or any wild rehabilitated animal for that matter. Cudos to the production team - and good luck to Hope in the wild :)
This was FASCINATING series. A pity groups like National Geo r Animal Planet didn't take interest...r did they?
Wow..
I've got a month old tiger/tabby cat which I rescued as a kitten, nearly ran over her on the road actually, but miraculously she was untouched as the car drove over her.
2day I've gone from musing over her tiger/tabby stripes, supposedly indicative of Wildcat ancestry, 2 checking out Scottish Wildcats (see scottishwildcats co uk) to becoming fascinated with bobcats & lynx etc.!!
hope she didnt drop her prize on ur foot while ur filming that! LOL ... my cats used to drop theirs on my foot when they brought home a 'prize' it could be a bat, or a mouse, and once a rabbit!
@brobador We realize this and it isn't fun for anyone to be the person handing out the live prey, but this is the best method to ensure a successful rehab and future in the wild.
@brobador When bred to be pets, rats are great little companions. I would think the rats used in teaching Hope how to hunt were rats that were bred for food, not pets. Bobcats are predators after all, they evolved to eat small animals. Lizards, snakes, bugs, mice, rats, etc, are all in the group of what Bobcats are designed to feed on.
Yep, she did get a few small rabbits as well before her release, you can't train these cats when you are going to release them into the wild, their natural instincts take hold on their own.
When is Hope's release date? Will we get to see the video of her being released? I hope so because we got to see her grow up and kinda became attacted to watching how she is doing. It has been while since a new video was made of her. Please give us an update on how she is doing, ect.
I think I shall be contacting BCR soon. Because of a friend's fondness and link to wildcats (the bobcat in particular), I am getting a rather interesting eduction. It is Combined Federal Campaign time. I hope I find your organization on the list. If not, we'll work something out.
I think ep 14 is going to be the one that really makes you cry. Because its going to be the release day into the wild, and a whole new world! I am looking forward to this! Just need a warning if we gonna need kleenex, plz!! thx so much for letting us watch these videos.
most impressive. human related animal rescues usually result in some form of human contamination especially in the early stages of an animal in need which can contribute to their demise. i can watch your combined professionalism and feel hope for any feline that comes into your care
I know that Hope must learn how to hunt, but, you are right, this is hard to watch. I love Bobcats, and actually saw one a month ago. They are splendidly wild creatures.
I sort of broke my heart to see poor hope going back to her feeding hole over and over again looking for rats. Sure it won't be easy on her in the wild, but it's still sad that she was so hungry and you guys have to not feed her so she gets used to being hungry - especially since those rats can easily escape her enclosure.
We have only ever released florida bobcats that we have rehabbed. These are a native species to Florida so we are able to do this. Releasing any of our other cats is out of the question, breeding programs only use cats that are the best genetically to breed. The best thing to do is to preserve natural habitat and stop poaching in order to protect the cats already in the wild.
all grown up now.. it was gross to watch her chew on the rat...lol...it was still wriggling....my cats brings in all sorts...i found feathers in all parts of my house once....poor bird put up a fight.
Yep, nature's cruel! Did you know domestic cats are the most successful hunters in the cat world? They have such a wide prey base they can always find something to kill. Tigers are only successful 1 out of every 20 hunts!
I have awaited each episode of Hope with anticipation and I know her release will come soon. This will undoubtedly be a happy day but it will make me very sad at the same time. She seems well prepared, but I'll worry about her none the less.
when i first see her in this video, she reminded me of one cat i had. she's gorgeous. hope will be alright in the wild, it will come to her naturally.
Is there any way you will be able to tell that she has done well in the wild?
Meanwhile - you'all have done a fantastic job keeping her wild and teaching her how to survive. Its a lot of work for one baby bobcat. :) Congradulations.
My dad once 'adopted' this stray cat. His name was Short Tail because he had a short tail. He was gray with a white belly and some black on the face, around the eyes and such. I'm thinking now maybe he might have been a hybrid. Can house cats and bobcats reproduce?
It may have been a manx cat or pixie bob which resemble the bobcat with their coloring and short tails. I think a bobcat would rather kill the domestic than mate with it!
So cute when she starts to growl because whoever is filming gets too close while eating. Clearly you all are doing a great job at taking care of these animals and getting those you can release up to par.
I had a friend with a halfbreed housecat/bobcat. It did not "meow", it growled just like that. It was also HEAVY, which didn't make much of a difference because it didn't like being picked up. It was a loving cat, otherwise, though.
Oh yea, accept to dogs. It would actually pick fights with the neighborhood dogs, and it won every time. XD
I wonder if a mother bobcat, in the wild, would teach the young to hunt or at least the art of killing. I had a momther cat, with one offfspring, and although the mother cat did not go hunting before, when the kitten got to a certain age, she would bring in a dead mouse with the back of the neck chewed on and give it to the kitten. The juicy neck drew the attention and the kitten started biting there too.Three times the mom did that till at last she brought in a live mouse. Bitten on the neck!
She will do fine. You guys have done one helluva magnificent job. Thank heavens there still remains a few people that actually care about animals, the environment and the future of our planet as we know it. Kudos Big Cat Rescue!!!
Gods but she is beautiful to behold!!! Such a wonderful creature. She will do just fine in the wild as long as she stays away from people. I hope she hasn't grown too familiar to humans.
i got a question, why do people say that bobcats grin?? is it true???

It was already dead, she just brought it into the garage to eat it.
