A hero is defined by the villains and obstacles he faces. Nolan's Batman has faced the greatest challenges from a hero on screen, BY FAR. Reigning in his own monster (BEGINS), ethical / moral dilemmas (TDK), and physical punishment / self doubt (TDK Rises)
Nolan's Batman has been the DEFINITIVE superhero of our generation. Not only are they by far and away the best comic book movie, but it's the most reflective and relevant to our current societies fears. Nolan's films have had prickly subtext. Dealing with the anxieties of a post 9/11 world. Each villain has been a terrorist. International / Al Queda (League of Shadows), home grown terrorism / McVeigh (the Joker), and terror militant cult leaders / Ghaddafi (Bane), We are the 99% (Catwoman)
Ledger's Joker, and Hardy's Bane are quickly shaping up to being easily the most intimidating, frightening and overall best on screen comic book villains we have ever gotten a chance to witness. From the way they are written, to the nuanced acting. Definitive villains. While BEGINS had "bad guys" in it, the story was more about Batman ... and Batman himself was basically the monster of that film, the way the Joker is the monster of TDK, and Bane is the monster of TDK Rises.
Ledger's Joker, and Hardy's Bane are quickly shaping up to being easily the most intimidating, frightening and overall best on screen comic book villains we have ever gotten a chance to witness. While BEGINS had "bad guys" in it, the story was more about Batman ... and Batman himself was basically the monster of that film, the way the Joker is the monster of TDK, and Bane is the monster of TDK Rises.
TDK Rises has been talked about by the production staff, namely the producer Charles Roven. They said the crew was split down the middle which film they preferred more between BEGINS and TDK. Johnathan Nolan, Chris Nolan, and David Goyer for TDK Rises apparently bring the trilogy full circle back to a character study of Bruce Wayne ala BEGINS, but has more of the tone, intelligence, and menace of TDK. Rises looks to be a good mixture of both tone and look of BEGINS and TDK. Love it !!!
TDK is the better technically made film, it's a full notch above BEGINS. But they are two entirely different stories, the same way TDK Rises will be an entirely different tone and story from TDK. That's how you brilliantly keep each movie in a trilogy fresh and exciting. BEGINS is the epitome of comic book origin story, TDK is a mesmerizing and haunting epic about a city facing a crime drama, and how Batman and the freaks (Joker, Crane, Dent) have had impact on Gotham. Apples and Oranges
I rewatched this movie again and Zimmer's score made me sit through the entirety of the ending credits of a movie I've seen a dozen times. A modern master.
So Here we Go....This Year We ended TRANSFORMERS / Next Year We Say GoodBye To Nolan's BatMan Trilogy..This Two Made a Huge Impact on The Movie Biz This Decade an what a way to go..THANK U CHRIS NOLAN/MICHAEL BAY FOR YOUR AWEEESOME MOVIES..2005-2012
There was something really original about Batman Begins. The Dark Knight was technically a better movie, but I'll always have fond memories of BB. Something truly special.
@ironjoker101 I think Batman Begins will always stand out from Dark Knight and Dark Knight Rises because, Batman Begins focused more on the darkness of batman's birth. It had a lot more night scenes, more mystery because of Scarecrow and the fear he spread. In TDK, the movie basically was less suspense and more battle against Joker. Ie: explosions, mass chaos. And TDKR will be like TDK on steroids.
@FigureInTheForest I kind of agree with you. To be honest, as far as story and the progression of Bruce/Batman, Batman Begins is by far better than TDK. In TDK, Heath Ledger stole the show and that's what most people payed attention to as oppose to the actual story and progression of Bruce/Batman. I feel TDKR will go back to the roots of Batman Begins and flesh out Bale more.
@mjmac0415 Now that you mention it, I do have confidence in TDKR, because I think you are right. If they can get back to fleshing out Bruce Wayne and his inner struggles while facing Bane, it will be a good show. I mean, Heath Leger did a wonderful job, don't get me wrong, but I don't think people paid enough attention to the real story behind it. They just watched it for the crazy Joker scenes and the mass battles going on. But I agree with you completely =)
@JesusInNike23 This started with you questioning my comment about people having the right to an opinion. That is entirely IT. Nobody is trying to tell you your opinion is wrong or worse than theirs. It shows more about how you feel so intimidated by someone else's thought that you feel compelled to prove them "wrong" all because you don't agree with them.
For the last time, you like what you like, they'll like what they like. Opinion is not fact. Get over it.
@JesusInNike23 When it all boils down to it, the quality of a movie is entirely subjective and no, movie critics and film degrees do not automatically constitute an outright fact as to whether a movie is good or not. At the origin of those film degrees, they were taught what was "good or bad". Same with film critics, they just grew to love certain things. That personal opinion already makes a lot of reviews biased.
@JesusInNike23 And the movie TDK is rated as better by certain critics because they just like the movie more for certain reasons. There is no right or wrong way about it. You love TDK more, give tons of "deep" meaningful explanations for the tones seen in the movie and just ouright love the movie more than BB because of that. It still remains as your opinion.
@JesusInNike23 OOOh well.. if it's collective ratings you want to go by, feel free to have a look at my comment up there. Rated much higher than yours, not by much but definitely higher.
Consider that you being wrong on grounds that you're trying to argue an opinion as fact, grounds that I have been rated more right than you, and grounds of you admitting to being an ignorant asshole. Feel free to keep on shoveling metaphorical shit, this conversation is by all rights and purposes finished.
I remember seeing this at the cinema and thinking "omg! how epic is this!" the music score and the story combined with the true dark feel that Batman should be! great film :)
@JesusInNike23 That does not constitute a fact. If a collective bunch of people called you an asshole, it wouldn't mean you are by all rights and purposes an asshole. Movie critics are no different than anyone else watching a movie. If you think movie critic opinions are valid facts.. you need some enlightenment.
@JesusInNike23 Hey, just because you easily get offended by someone simply stating their opinion doesn't mean you have to slam their opinion. You can tell someone so many reasons for you thinking one is much better than the other but it's not going to change what they think. You can give as many deep explanations as you want as to why YOU BELIEVE it's a better movie but it's just your opinion. Not even some film critic degree is going to automatically make someone's opinion a fact.
@JesusInNike23 thats a big loss, but i have seen( or heard) the work of zimmer in inception, and the emotional pieces are incredible, i think he will do just as good as the mitical howard
Everyone needs to CHILLAX. Yes, the cast from top to bottom is superior in TDK, Ledger's performance was epic- a performance that will never be topped in a comic-book adaptation. But, as grand a film as TDK is, the plot grew stale after 120 minutes (just my opinion), it did a great job of setting up TDKR but Batman Begins did a great job of both setting up TDK and telling it's own story. Yes, Katie Holmes was atrocious but Liam Neeson delivered. Personally, Batman Begins is superior.
@JesusInNike23 I'm sorry but any point you were trying to make was instantly screwed up the moment you insulted me, all because I said I didn't like something quite as much as you obviously do. Maybe once you get out of the habit of thinking in the ways of retarded logic such as opinions equalling fact, I might actually be able to take you seriously but until then, you're just sounding like another TDK fanboy.
@JesusInNike23 What critiques? I did not give a review of the movie pin pointing the failings of the movie, did I? Where in my OPINION was I saying my OPINION was better and more correct than anyone else's OPINION? Proven wrong? I could give a proper critique of the movie but it would just result in you defending it again because you can't take another's opinion. It doesn't matter how many times you try to "prove" how one movie is better than another, you are not going to change someone's mind.
@JesusInNike23 Wow.. I thought it was just a couple points backing up your opinion but you really don't know when to call it a day do you? Has the meaning of the word "opinion" completely escaped your mind? You are aware that no matter what you may like doesn't instantly mean everyone else is wrong, right? Feel free to love whichever movie's plot and characters better but you're not going to be "right" no matter how much you keep explaining. It's better, only in your opinion. Get over it.
@JesusInNike23 But seriously, if you really can't handle the idea of another person not sharing your similar taste in action, plot, characters or movie entirely, you really should stay off the internet. Feel free to go into great detail with God knows how many replies you've made but you are not going to get anywhere ridiculing someone for their opinion.
@JesusInNike23 Once again, use your brain. Fact of the matter is, TDK isn't loved by all Batman fans no matter how much you love it yourself. I watch movies to enjoy the story being told and after being warmed up with Begins, I and quite a few others felt disappointed (not all entirely) with TDK. No amount of personal critical acclaim you or any critic gives of it, will change my or their minds. There is no right or wrong way about it. Can't handle opinions? GTF off of the internet then.
@JesusInNike23 For starters, don't twist my words round to fit your defence of your opinion. If you care to use your brain you'll see I said nothing of it being just a Heat copy. Critics are just like anybody else with an opinion, so maybe you should get it into your head that yours doesn't pertain fact, nor does a critic's no matter how respected they are. Movies are created to be enjoyed and to tell a story, not to impress a bunch of snobby reviewers who work for a website or a newspaper.
Spiderman soundtrack was my 1st (thats Danny) then Batman 2nd from where i loved all Hans's soundtrack like Pirates of carbean, kung fu panda, modern warfare 2, etc. etc.
I am a hugh Batman fan and when this movie came out i cringed. I remembered the 80's ones which were a crime and should be deleted from existance. It wasnt advertised well so i saw it when the movie i went to see was sold out. What a truely AWESOME movie. This is the Batman i read about, this is the real true Batman!! Bob Kane would be proud. i rate it 6 out of 5 stars!!!!
@EclipseHedgehog Both very good movies, but no ... and don't make me give you a long winded response why. Begins is outstanding. The Dark Knight is on another level.
@WhiteMamba824 Maybe in your opinion but it didn't stop TDK from feeling like it was at times just a summer movie, even though it was well made. Begins personally for me was a better Bat movie than the sequel. Begins felt fresh and TDK felt like a Heat inspired Batman film. Either way, there is no right or wrong. They're both movies and there are no facts pertaining to which was better. It comes down to personal taste, so don't go bashing down his opinion.
The theme is good for the new modernized Batman yes, as good as it gets, but it is hard to top the Danny Elfman Batman theme, classic, same goes for John Williams Superman theme, it should never change ever, but I'm sure it will be.
Batman is the only superhero that has good movies, the old ones with Michael Keaton and now with Christian Bale all of them are classics so you have two variations of Batman movies to enjoy. BATMAN IS THE BEST SUPERHERO.
@SamuraiSwoosh well i dont know thats your opinion. If you watch batman 89, the music is fit specifically to the scenes and in my opinion enhances the scenes which it plays to - take the sequence where batman rescues vicki from the museum. also, the driving percussion in the main theme represents the power of the batmobile, similar to molossus, making it seem powerful.
@SamuraiSwoosh over the top? maybe to suit Burtons more gothic, darkly comic vision. Same with zimmer/newton howards one being gritty, powerful, dark and sorrowful to suit Nolans.
@SamuraiSwoosh hey mate, elfmans score to batman is rated one of the greatest of all time. For most of the 100 greatest movie score lists, its in the top 100. Its rated very highly on most professional film score review websites (usually 5/5). Its gothic nature, forceful power, pathos and twisted elegance are all very well conveyed and executed. Take this into account when you form your opinion. but i didn't say i dont like zimmers version - ive listened to this tune alone maybe over 100 times.
@SamuraiSwoosh Lol regardless, the Batcave shouldn't be a bunker, and it shouldn't be brightly lit. You're right, in Begins it was an actual cave. I prefer people to stick to the original plot and not try to inject their own ideas to what is an already legendary super hero. I guess I shouldn't speak my opinion on such a touchy subject like Batman, God forbid I accidentally mistake a 'lighted room' for a bunker below a shipping yard... Besides, why so serious?? Batman doesn't even exist.
@SamuraiSwoosh Danny Elfman's score represented a less serious Batman with more intrigue, Hans Zimmer's score represents the more modern Batman with a serious, fast paced attitude. Both are good, no need to say which is better and which is worse. Take for example the Batcave in both movies, one extremely dark and an actual cave, the other a lighted room underground. Personally I prefer Elfman's score because it brings back the nostalgia factor from when I was just a child.
hey guys james newton howard worked on this too, come on han zimmer is good but he repeats himself like a child its terrible, give james some credit too
@matt484991 Such as what? I'm not being argumentative, i'm just putting together a playlist of great soundtrack music and have nothing from James Newton Howard.
@matt484991 Well in reality Hans Zimmer was in charge of the Batman Main Theme and JNH on The Bruce Wayne Theme but yes i agree with you its a combined effort and both get the credit for no matter what other say about it
I been playing this theme in my psp for the past couple of nights. I'm so glad that with age I started to explore different types so music. Ya know its funny cause now when I hear something I'm now able to point out the composer. Or when I hear music during a football or bball gm I can now be like oh I know who that is. Like during the Celtics intro during the finals in LA I noticed they were playing Rob Dougan, Furious Angel from Matrix 2. I love this theme starting at 1:26.
Starting at around 6:57 is Hans Zimmer's Batman theme, which was supposed to be his "hero" theme for Batman. He didn't use much of it throughout the film because he felt that the character hadn't "earned" it yet. It's at the very end of the credits as a lead-in to the following film--The Dark Knight! But he didn't use much of it in that movie, either. Maybe in the next one?
cool..

The theme is good for the new modernized Batman yes, as good as it gets, but it is hard to top the Danny Elfman Batman theme, classic, same goes for John Williams Superman theme, it should never change ever, but I'm sure it will be.

He's a silent guardian,
A watchful protector,
A Dark Knight

Batman is the only superhero that has good movies, the old ones with Michael Keaton and now with Christian Bale all of them are classics so you have two variations of Batman movies to enjoy. BATMAN IS THE BEST SUPERHERO.

In Batman Begins, Hans Zimmer is the heroism, and James Newton Howard is the heart.

one thing for sure, this tune is a beast
DanGRtheMan 1 year ago
@SamuraiSwoosh well i dont know thats your opinion. If you watch batman 89, the music is fit specifically to the scenes and in my opinion enhances the scenes which it plays to - take the sequence where batman rescues vicki from the museum. also, the driving percussion in the main theme represents the power of the batmobile, similar to molossus, making it seem powerful.
DanGRtheMan 1 year ago
@SamuraiSwoosh over the top? maybe to suit Burtons more gothic, darkly comic vision. Same with zimmer/newton howards one being gritty, powerful, dark and sorrowful to suit Nolans.
DanGRtheMan 1 year ago
@SamuraiSwoosh hey mate, elfmans score to batman is rated one of the greatest of all time. For most of the 100 greatest movie score lists, its in the top 100. Its rated very highly on most professional film score review websites (usually 5/5). Its gothic nature, forceful power, pathos and twisted elegance are all very well conveyed and executed. Take this into account when you form your opinion. but i didn't say i dont like zimmers version - ive listened to this tune alone maybe over 100 times.
DanGRtheMan 1 year ago
@SamuraiSwoosh Lol regardless, the Batcave shouldn't be a bunker, and it shouldn't be brightly lit. You're right, in Begins it was an actual cave. I prefer people to stick to the original plot and not try to inject their own ideas to what is an already legendary super hero. I guess I shouldn't speak my opinion on such a touchy subject like Batman, God forbid I accidentally mistake a 'lighted room' for a bunker below a shipping yard... Besides, why so serious?? Batman doesn't even exist.
Smann54 1 year ago
@SamuraiSwoosh Danny Elfman's score represented a less serious Batman with more intrigue, Hans Zimmer's score represents the more modern Batman with a serious, fast paced attitude. Both are good, no need to say which is better and which is worse. Take for example the Batcave in both movies, one extremely dark and an actual cave, the other a lighted room underground. Personally I prefer Elfman's score because it brings back the nostalgia factor from when I was just a child.

love this music! both JNH and Hans Zimmer did a great job on it!

The part that starts a 4:50...is there a particular name to that piece? I know it plays when Bruce is young on the train with his parents I believe

hey guys james newton howard worked on this too, come on han zimmer is good but he repeats himself like a child its terrible, give james some credit too
ijones81 1 year ago
Why is everyone calling this 'Hans Zimmers'"? JNH worked on it too! And I think his work in scores is much better than Zimmers'.

@matt484991 i like both their work lol

@matt484991 Such as what? I'm not being argumentative, i'm just putting together a playlist of great soundtrack music and have nothing from James Newton Howard.
GrundyMad 1 year ago
@matt484991 Well in reality Hans Zimmer was in charge of the Batman Main Theme and JNH on The Bruce Wayne Theme but yes i agree with you its a combined effort and both get the credit for no matter what other say about it
Yamimike3000 1 year ago
Hans Zimmer hits the mark yet again, and leads up to his superb work on Inception, which has to be one of the best scores I have ever heard.

I love this theme starting at 1:26.
boygenius7 1 year ago
@boygenius7, i listen to it on my PSP too!
Gambit1997 1 year ago
@boygenius7
The theme starting at 1:26 is "Eptesicus"
Jammed9000 1 year ago
Starting at around 6:57 is Hans Zimmer's Batman theme, which was supposed to be his "hero" theme for Batman. He didn't use much of it throughout the film because he felt that the character hadn't "earned" it yet. It's at the very end of the credits as a lead-in to the following film--The Dark Knight! But he didn't use much of it in that movie, either. Maybe in the next one?
