  • This is a "berserk" video. =p

  • every time i have goosebumps. great job.

завидую нашим родителям; когда мы были мелкими, таких шедевров не выпускали

  • this is actually a really amazing story!

  • @lurviQ Actually, you're the one who needs to do some growing up and learn to deal with differences of opinion. If yoy think my comment is trampling anyone, you've obviously very sheltered. While you're at it, get a sense of humor and stop trying to pick fights with strangers on the internet. As you can see, my comment seemed to offend no one else. Or maybe no other crazy people read it, perhaps.

  • i dont know why but it depresses me. ifeel sad sad sad

  • sorry but those are some pretty scary eyes.

  • This video went viral on India

  • @octaviocurti922 same us English has no taste

  • Great and amazing!

  • beautiful work with plenty of atmosphere.

  • russian cutaway gag.

  • Why is this the only thing that comes up when I search Russian cartoons? I mean its good, but I don't think this is the sort of thing Russian children watch on Saturday mornings.

  • @hezekial try "ну погоди!"

  • @hezekial if you want to see something that Russian children would have watched on the television "Karlson and Junior" is one

  • 8 people dont like south park either

  • I still remember watching this in English in the early 90s does anyone have this in English?

  • Looks exactly like my Minecraft. Stupid crappy computer.

  • this is suppose to be funny? i dont get it lol

  • Comment removed

  • The movie is one of the best animation movies of all time. Plus the story has a very deep meaning.

  • @vladan1021 Hello, this is a cool film, but I am totally lost as to the meaning... any help?

  • I'm actually learning russian just so I can understand this.

  • i don't understand this video...

  • Oh my goodness this is amazing!

  • yes yes we did, dumb and sullen Communists drunken vodka))

during the Soviet era in Russia filming such great movies, which Hollywood even did not dream!

  • Who had the nerve to "dislike" this? Come on, stop hiding in the fog and show yourselves!!

  • @00cm Its called "having an opinion".

  • @lurviQ Thanks for the reminder. If you could read between the lines though, you'd understand that: a) my comment was made in jest; and b) it's actually an indirect way of expressing my opinion, that this is a really wonderful and timeless animation. Perhaps "insight" is more important than "opinions". It's a shame that we value the latter more than the former, I suppose because it's easier.

  • @00cm You're expressing your opinion, while trampling on others.

    Grow up.

  • How come the narrator speaks like a melody?

  • This is Horror movie. Thumbs up if you agree.

  • @rak1445 This is NOT a horror movie! This is a famous Russian applique cartoon for kids! All Russian children know this movie.

  • @RaCustos Maybe. But i have 3 thumbs up! THANKS FOR SUPPORT, GUYS! Anyway, this "cartoon" is pretty scary.

  • @rak1445 I think it's mysterious, but not scary at all.

  • Hahaha 04:11 !!

  • poor hedgehog, when he loses the jam :(

but lol at the bear at the end!!

  • How did they do the water effect?

  • @benamation you better ask how did they do FOG.

  • @KirillKrasov How did they do the FOG?

  • @benamation there was used a special type of paper, it's almost transparent, i don't remember how it's called, but back in soviet times it was casual thing. Kids used to make kites of them.

  • Comment removed

  • @KirillKrasov Maybe it's pergamine or glassine...?

  • @CuchulainnXXX Blotter

  • @CuchulainnXXX

It's a tecnique that the author (Norstein) invented himself, it's called perekladka ("cut out" )

  • Beautiful. It was short and yet each character had a distinct personality, hedgehog, bear cub, owl, horse, dog... and someone swimming in the river... OK, maybe the snail was a little one-dimensional :D

  • the movie is about discovery and fear of the unknown, The hedgehog is like a child who knows little but was to look and discover new things. Usual things can seem like a real adventure to him.

  • ...even with subtitles i dont understand any of it

  • Hey, guys... for all of you who are asking about the meaning of this film. I think it's about childrens fears and fantasies. Every child is seeing something unusual in a usual things. It's about a big and strange world, which is not noticed anymore by the adults, since they grew up. A beautiful, sometimes scary, but a very warm story. That is my opinion. Sorry for poor English. Hope you've understand me =)

  • @scooterplanetru Totally agree! wonderful cartoon, even for adults who still haven't lost their imagination )

  • @scooterplanetru I think that this film is not just for children, it has a deeper meaning.

  • @scooterplanetru It is not only about children it is about us all, our fears, our uncertainties, the flow of life which guides us, and friends who help us pass all this.

  • The music is fantastic, who composed it?

  • In soviet storybook land...

  • This makes me want to smoke crack.

  • I See commericals here! WTF??????????????

  • This is one of my favorite youtube videos.

  • he was much faster in the game

  • @13AnGeL666 LOOLOLOLOLOOLOLOLOLOLOLL

  • This looks like a horror movie

  • This owl is scary :O

  • Fuck you, Mazda. I just want to watch this video without your stupid ad.

  • and I forget one thing - this is Soviet, NOT Russian multiplication, cuz there were no awesome multiplications since soviet union have collapsed.

  • @akr1m1 @akr1m1 you are so wrong. have you seen The old man and the sea?

  • In 2003 on Tokyo's multiplication festival "laputa" Hedgehog in the Fog was recognized as best multiplication for all times. The main idea of it(as far as I understand) - the hedgehog is a projection of a child exploring big, unknown world. I personally don't liked it much, maybe I just too aged for it...

  • @akr1m1 It looks like more than that. It almost looks like the little guy has his set ways and his set life, and the fog (life) takes a turn and forces him to explore new areas. He's forever changed and will always wonder what else is out there. :)

  • Well, it is still better than clay animation...........*shudders*

  • Ah finally, a film for the hipsters of cinema to call their own.

  • Simply beautiful, an absolute masterpiece in animation.

  • this has to symbolize something...

  • @dalia72592 Why can't it just be a beautiful story of friendship?

  • 67:19-67:32 my fav part

'who else but u know how to count the stars'

  • Does anyone know the soundtrack form this?

  • @Jeffrey7445

    from*

  • My favorite animation. Really beautiful

  • I love the little hedgehog's voice. He's adorable!

  • @ArtsyTails

I'm wondering if the hedgehog is a girl actually because the voice actor is female...

  • @Jeffrey7445 But the narrator refers to it as a "he"...

  • @ArtsyTails It's simply because there is such a thing as masculine and feminine forms in Russian language. In English it would be referred to as "it" but in Russian each noun has either femininity or masculinity. In this case... a hedgehog is "yozhik" in Russian, which is masculine...

  • Ahem...

It isn't folk tale this animation is based upon but fairytale written by wonderful author Vladimir Suteev, as long as I remember.

  • WHAT IS UP WITH THAT OWL SERIOUSLY I AM GETTING CREEPED OUT

  • Comment removed

  • Miyazaki is a fan?

    *watches vid*

    /not surprised at all

  • What i beautiful film, but I totally did not get the message

  • My favourite animation!!!!!!!!! please check out my newest stop frame piece, this film inspired it

  • This is incredible. I'm a huge animation buff and I'd never heard of this man before finding this on 'The Daily What' this morning. I've seen bits of old Soviet animation before, and I'm just now piecing together how awesome and experimental it was. Must...find...more...

  • That WAS beautiful. I know a little of the Russian language now. It's a beautiful language. Yes is what animation should be used for.

  • this is brilliant. :) thanks for uploading this.

  • the best bit is 0.21 to 10.40

  • Meh. Good at what it tries to do, but forgettable.

  • @WinterInJapan

    Bit like you then, mate.

  • @WinterInJapan FORGETTABLE? Go watch Twilight than, I'm pretty sure someone like you would like it

  • @SuperHeroMania I never said it was shit like Twilight (even though such comments are passé at this point).

Just that there were better animated films at the time, and there are better animated films now. I never said it was bad. Its very atmospheric and has good editing, and does a lot well for the little time its given. It's just nothing I will personally consider a classic. No need to criticize me for an opinion.

  • wierd beyond description xD

  • I actually remember watching this as a child (except it was dubbed) and even then I thought it was beautiful. I watched it every christmas on an old battered video tape (the wonders of recording) and it's actually one of my favourite films to watch on the holidays, up there with the classics. But.... 4:12 .... WTF is he doing?!

  • @randomandproudqueen

i suppose, he is parodying midges

  • @randomandproudqueen i lol'd at 4:12

  • @bluenmoon haha, I keep replaying 4:12 now, hilarious.

  • @bluenmoon me too...and then the owl appeared and I laughed even harder

    HOO HOO!

  • it's wonderful to be together .... a very smart one! G R E A T piece of work, art, love.

  • i would have loved to see a feature length version of this film

  • Wow. I finally got the time to view this (and thank you to Google Chrome's themes :'p). Truly wonderful! ;'D

  • I don't think I'm capable of understanding this ever, and I really want to...

  • niiii nunnnu!!!:D

  • what a creepy freaking owl!!

  • Some friend are making a market in his old house that will soon be destroyed. We are going to be playing lots of chill out and and put projection on on the wall.

This animation is perfect for the ambient we want to create, so can anybody tell me some other animations in the same style as this??

    Any suggestion would be great!

  • 10:00 Thousand yard stare. 'I've seen things, man, I've seen things you wouldn't believe'.

  • Did this come out on Russian television or was it like in theaters or something? Also was it a series or just this one video?

  • @TheRandomm4,

This was broadcasted via TV in the whole Soviet Union, and it still is nowadays in the former Soviet republics, though not that often as in the past. It's a single piece of animation, not part of a series.

    And it's not a Russian video. It's a Soviet one. :)

  • LOL AT THE BEAR

  • Dude this film is like...my whole childhood. In less than 11 minutes.

Except my story didn't have all those archetypes.

  • who the shit disliked this?

  • I made a video about Owls, and i included this. :b

  • What sort of an idiot makes a porcupine sandwhich!?!? XD

  • Makes me wish more people actually posted more of this than most anime that's on the internet.

Really, anything like this will kill a weeaboo, and make them like all types of animation.

  • That owl is creepy.

  • this is my google chrome theme

  • @izthishuman I saw this video a while ago, and saw it under the theme section so I just had to come back and watch it again. :D

  • @izthishuman me too!

  • @izthishuman i don't like this theme. :p

  • Book “Hedgehog in the Fog” in English and Russian is available at Norstein Collection at Amazon

  • Seems simple enough, but if this is a folk tale, then is it actually just about the hedgehog and his journey or does it have some hidden meaning or moral?

  • @TonyM231 It is hard to find a folk tale in any culture without a hidden message.

  • Hmm...I'm not sure what to think about this yet. The animation is beautiful, no doubt there. The story is...well...easy to follow, and simple, but there's something deep about the last couple lines that I can't put my finger on. Or maybe it's just that I've taken to many literature classes and I see "deepness" even when it's not there. Anyone want to shed some light?

  • @Leonhart231 All ingenious is simple...

  • @Leonhart231 I think they do have a special deepness. Maybe it's just a metter of time for you to put a finger on.

  • i Like the animation, it looks realistic

  • Bitches Don't know

  • Nice so after watching this there only remains one question:

    What the hell?

  • 2:03 ...Charrrrlie!!

    Haha jk...amazing piece of animation!

  • Wow I used to watch this with my mom when I was three. It has made me cry.

  • If you ask me, the story isn't that great. I think the animation was really neat though. The music was good too.

  • @raymond18 It makes more ence and sounds better in russian....direct translation doesnt serve its justice!....

  • @forealXXX You could have a point there, but I think the basic plot gets through alright. I know it comes from an old story, but I think the thing that makes this film stand out is the way the story was told.

  • Good, very good! Outstanding!

  • What is that at 3:30?

  • @Rockyfan10060 eh it looks like an elephant...

  • I've been in forests in the morning with fog and they really are beautiful.

  • Comment removed

  • Good 60-70s animation.

  • Aww, the part with the dog is so adorable!! That's a very beautiful movie, thank you for the upload.

  • I love this film. But that owl.... Freaks me the Hell out.

  • he looks like hes on crack when he looses the jam

  • Interesting... Though I've never heard of this.

  • I wanna have tea and raspberry jam, heated up on the samovar with juniper twigs, and then count the stars.

  • @paerarru me too;)

  • what is that third thing she sees after the owl and bat, I cant see what it is

  • @ThePowerPlumber i think its an elephant

  • @ThePowerPlumber the elephant

  • i love russian culture

  • Stunningly beautiful! This is what animation should be used for. What incredible craftsmanship and visual poetry. In this day of high tech, hyper-frenzied spectacle, this little film should serve as an example to the "entertainment" industry. A film shouldn't beat you over the head with the latest nausea inducing graphics flashing by at light speed.

  • @mindstormsabrewin 'visual poetry'.. Ah.... that's the word I need, thank you!

  • @mindstormsabrewin you realize that for 1975, this film was using some of the most high-tech, hyper-frenzied graphics? The sound and animation style are all using some very complicated techniques for the era. Not that I disagree with your statement as far as some recent films go, but modern technology fuels modern expression, its just how it works.

  • @Dracklen248 Oh. Thank you for teaching me. I feel so much better now that someone straightened me out. I am eternally grateful you took the time to let me know how goddamn ignorant I am.

  • @mindstormsabrewin Old timer.

  • @SilverStateMan LOL. Not really. Though sometimes I feel like it. I'm just in awe at the creativity and technique shown by artists that had very primitive tools by today's standards. It's very inspiring to know that you don't need advanced technology to transport a viewer into another world for a little while. Lucas and James Cameron can create some fireworks on screen but they seem to be missing something.

  • @mindstormsabrewin That's very subjective, and to be projecting your personal opinions as valid commentary about the movie industry at large is a little jaded. In mine, media has actually evolved from that of the past, despite whether or not that's apparent in every production (I'm sure 80% of all movies & shows weren't amazing then, either). There are some tangible changes in production regarding movies, though, like the "cash cow" effect: huge hype + fast, ADDish plot.

  • @SilverStateMan That's all we're doing up here..... sharing our opinions. I'm not really jaded. Ok maybe a little. I do agree with you that the majority of movies and shows weren't amazing just because the came before today's entertainment. It's all too easy to romanticize the past. It's hard to measure concepts like grace and artistry. And true, it IS unfair of me to paint the entire scene today with a broad brush. But I can't help it...... it's my opinion! And it seems a lot of people agree.

  • Great animation and very deep psychologism.sometimes i feel the same with the hedghog

  • the hedgehog deff smoked some good kush hahahah

  • This is very well done, but it would have given me nightmares as a child!

  • really? its one of my favourite childhood memories

  • Wonderful story and craftsmanship

  • Я — Ёжик. Я упал в реку

I"m hedgehog. I fell in the river.

    Обожаю ))

    I love it ))

  • What will be like.......in the fog.....

  • this is beautiful <3

    thanks for putting this up!

  • this is a beautiful piece of art. an even more touching story. i love it<3

this deserves many, many more views than it has now (5,136 for those keeping count).

  • @hima1a To be fair, there is another version with 550,000+ views.

  • 2,834 a week later

  • yes, Russian production was at highest level back in the day.. but that ended after the Ussr fell...

  • There were no producers in USSR

  • @povilasm yes, there were... why won't you go ask some one who lived in the USSR, my mom did... did yours?

  • @povilasm I mean directors...

  • Wicked cool, perfect timing with Family Guy spoof

  • this is beautiful

  • Outstanding, this is a wonderful piece of animation, thank you for putting this up, truly a classic

  • Thanks

  • Thank you =+
