This commercial is paralleled in Alan Moore's Watchmen, and in the movie version too (right at the beginning of the movie, paired with the song "Unforgettable".
Historic Commercial! Timeless! I never get tired watching this clip! Ridley Scott always had an eye for the camera. He would later unite with Vangelis in his cult classic Blade Runner.
As a former Mad Man I can say that this is one of the best commercials of all time. The fantasy is extremely well created. Notice how he swims and comes out of the water between her legs and then disappears.
@rudenudedude9 I'm looking for that one...was just talking about it...I now realize that commercial artistically was about 25 years ahead of it's time.
@vince065us They are selling a product designed for and targeted to women. The fantasy for the target audience is that she is getting ravaged by a fit man. There is no fantasy in some chick swimming topless by herself.
Look at the man in the commercial. A MAN, not a boy or cute young man. A mature male, well traveled, experienced, worldly. This is what was in a time that was more right than now. The woman, a beautiful goddess, elegant, not a pop flash in the pan.
This commercial is the greatest of all time. Beauty, elegance and trip back to my childhood. One of the very few commercials that held my attention completely, as a work of art. They should put these commercials back in circulation, they are far better than anything out today.
Though "Alien" had been released in 1979, this series of Chanel commercials really placed a heavy focus on "Ridley Scotts" visionary filming skills! Thank you for uploading this commercial that I so loved as a teenage boy! The score was from the popular Greek Composer Vangelis Papathanassious' "China" album!
Mind blow. Always liked this commercial, but never noticed the whole shoe thing! Now, it's even better!! Thanks for posting datu52, and for the commentors making this even more special. Always thought the man was just part of her imagination, but he turns out to be a gentleman, even if he is part of her "fantasy". Kudos for Chanel.
There is something beautiful about "And I will feel this way forever " coming from an 80's commercial. Being born in 1988' and watching this just gives me a nostalgic feeling for a time I didn't know. Love fragrances and Number 5 of course too.
Exquisite, magical, flawless. This is the single best piece of film making I've ever seen. I was astounded and transported every time I saw it on TV. Thanks! Wonderful to see this again.
The greatest commercial of all time. I can feel it down to my core. It is such an unforgetable piece of art, that even thirty years from now, it will still feel the same to me. This is when youtube is priceless.
There's a Chanel No 5 commercial with Ella Fitzgerald on it, next to this commercial the best they ever did. I became a fan of her's because of it not the Memorex commercial.
@daisy3269 What is the guy holding in his hand? Well, if you notice at the beginning while she is laying poolside, she has TWO shoes next to her...then when the plane's shadow passes over there is only ONE shoe (she must have knocked it in the pool). The man goes in to retrieve it for her and that is what he is carrying when he gets out of the pool. When he "disappears" the shoe "reappears" next to the other one. Pure MAGIC this commercial is!
I remember this commercial as a child and I used to watch transfixed; as all of my senses took in everything . This commerical is a classic. They don't make commericals like that anymore.
The MOST memorable commercial from my childhood!! So beautiful, ethereal and timeless!! It was on a lot on Friday nights during Dallas soap opera. Thanks for posting!!
In the late 70s and early 80s I remember you'd see 100 bland, fast, shouting, meaningless ads in a row, and then out of nowhere there'd be one that was imaginative, evocative, perfectly visually composed with a sublime "gliding" movement and pace to it. Nine times out of ten it would turn out to be Ridley Scott.
You're so right! My sentiments exactly. I was a young teenager in the mid-80s, and I remember how every single Chanel ad would just stick out and put everything else to shame -- the music, the mood, the imagery. (And when I then first smelled No. 5, I understood what luxury smells like. It matches the opulent ad campaign perfectly.)
I agree this is the best commercial ever made. Have been looking for old commercial for Evening In Paris perfume. It was also great. Would love to see it on youtube.
It is insane that this is the best version of this classic ad you can find online.

Truly a classic commercial, even after 30 years.
I've always wondered, what is the guy holding in his right hand when he approaches her?
(and no, it's not Leonard Nimoy as the V/O)
