I'm sure Nightwish basically and originally has been based on Tarja's voice so the band has realized that with Anette they have to change style too at least a bit,because Anette's voice would never fit to the old Nightwish(symphonic metal) but apart from this no matter how good singer Anette is she's just not even close to Tarja(and I didn't talk about their look yet)
They both sound good, Tarja is the better singer. Anette's songs are poppier and more catchy when and Tarja's are more beautiful. Then again, I'm just now checking out Nightwish so I can't very well talk as much as the old fans can.

About walking alone.. since the breakup NW released one album (DPP) while Tarja released one christmas and 2 rock albums that sold gold and platinum.

Best example and my personal limit of tolerance was the video where every bandmember changed into a girl. The whole thing was the entire anti-thesis of everything that Nightwish was in the past. The clothes, the voice, her dance moves, the song, everything. What once was dark, deep and beautiful now has written "pop" and "MTV" all over it.

OK now back to reality it is all a matter of taste. I was a fan of Nightwish before Anette came into the picture and I will always prefer Tarja's Era over Anette's but I still love Nightwish and I love Anette's voice as well. IMO Nightwish lost something after Tarja's departure and Tarja lost something too and I hope in the future they clear things up and make some kick-ass collaborations.

I think that these two are both extremely talented. For the style of the band itself, though, Tarja seems better suited. As many people before me have said, Anette is more "pop metal." I prefer Tarja's powerful opera-like voice.
I'm not biased, though! I hadn't even heard of Nightwish until long after Anette joined the group. I downloaded their entire discography all at once, and I just prefer their older stuff.

My 2 cents:
1 - Anette does not have a pop voice, her style is more punk/rock based.
2 - Anette sings with passion but has an average voice and pretty weak technique. She can improve of course but atm that's the reality.
3 - Tarja is a metal singer with classical background. She performs great in classical venues from time to time, but she is a rock/metal singer.

The term "opera voice" does not even exist.
Probably the cult aspect of Tarja's classical approach is distracting non-musical people and make them think it's "operatic".
It may be the case when she sings an opera aria, but when singing rock her vocals are mostly rock with classical technique and other influences.
There is a HUGE difference between Tarja and shitty opera dropouts wanting to make a career in metal (see Lori Lewis, Simone Simons etc)

@Karen21242 Yeah she's rock but she's that type of Avril Lavine-rock that is basically just pop with a guitar and drums in it. Best example and my personal limit of tolerance was the video where every bandmember changed into a girl. The whole thing was the entire anti-thesis of everything that Nightwish was in the past. The clothes, the voice, her dance moves, the song, everything. What once was dark, deep and beautiful now has written "pop" and "MTV" all over it.

OK now back to reality it is all a matter of taste. I was a fan of Nightwish before Anette came into the picture and I will always prefer Tarja's Era over Anette's but I still love Nightwish and I love Anette's voice as well. IMO Nightwish lost something after Tarja's departure and Tarja lost something too and I hope in the future they clear things up and make some kick-ass collaborations.

@MrShinigamie Nope. I like Anette better too. I would never have gotten into Nightwish if they had kept Tarja. A friend of mine showed me the End Of An Era DVD and I couldn't even get past the 3rd song because I was sick of Tarja's voice at that point. People comparing her to Britney Spears are morons. Unlike Britney, Anette can actually SING. Her vocal range kicks Britney's ass from the US to Finland. Anette also doesn't lip-sync and dress like a whore.

I think that these two are both extremely talented. For the style of the band itself, though, Tarja seems better suited. As many people before me have said, Anette is more "pop metal." I prefer Tarja's powerful opera-like voice.
I'm not biased, though! I hadn't even heard of Nightwish until long after Anette joined the group. I downloaded their entire discography all at once, and I just prefer their older stuff.
