We all know the basics. Daily practice even on just single stroke, arm/wrist/finger, french/german, open/close, moeller, etc. Then move on to double stroke, one handed roll, open roll, etc. An hour a day is not enough to get them right and get them fast, not to mention not becoming a technical giant that forgets about music. I am one to say I will never be as good as them, ie., Rich, Blakey, Weckl, Vinnie, JoJo, Morello, Smith, etc. sad reality for a man to deal with.
half hr practice w/ systems such as Chaffees 4 patterns books & New Breed, those two alone will work on EVERYTHING- hand technique, because it's singles, doubles, paradiddles, flams- mixed stickings...plus you will improve overall coordination, 16th note 4- way coord (the 18 exercises pg 35-39 in the purple book is biblical), dynamics, polyrhythms, mixed meters...
That stuff will get you drumming like Vinnie, more than just working your hands.
It's a little known fact that Vinnie's career in porn equaled his percussive accomplishments. The music in this clip was actually used in one of his earliest films--"Busy with the Beavers." His money shot rivaled Peter North's. And all of this derived from an absurd mustache...

I'll tell you what is "eighties" is Vinnie's hairdo in this video...I would call it the "Progressive Jazzulet"...The cool jazz and progressive rock player's mullet.
Yeah, he can play that genre, but he's much more versatile, which is why zappa used him, and more recently sting, add to that some heavy metal aswell.
Tony's his number one influence - check out Tony Williams Lifetime, the "Ego" album...it's one of Vinnie's favorites - you can hear some stuff on it that Vinnie uses all the time in his fills and solos.
You have awesome ears to be able to hear the resemblence. Nice work man!

With you on that. Tired of hearing about half wit drummers lacking technique, feel, groove, touch and inventiveness. Mike Porkboy et al - Vinnie is simply a god. Those other rock drummers are mere overbaked biscuits - stick em in the bin.
I second that! But we don't need to pay too much attention to the people commenting about drummers like Portnoy, Barker or, like this one dude said - Vinnie should get some tips from Max Weinberg - i thought he was kidding, and when i asked him, "are you joking?" he called me a "douche" and told me i don't know what i'm talking about - long story short, THESE types of guys are young and naive. No need wasting any energy on them. Vinnie is untouchable. Any educated musician will agree.
phil collins is a good drummer but should stick to what he does best...write love ballads for prom themes. Phil shouldn't be mentioned in the same sentence with the likes of Vinnie, Steve Gadd and Dave Weckl
vinnie is one of the elite drummers, but this video is kinda depressing, it sounds horrible and the electronic drumset pieces makes it even worse, his just playing around, you cant really see his talent here, btw most of the 80s mainstream music sucks. @staedtler777 Actually, I think (and you could be right), but I think Vinnie did this clinic while he was doing a short Japan tour w/ Sadao Watanabe in '86. The reason being, he's using the same kit from the Watanabe video, and he looks exactly the same...(even the same white Reeboks!)

How does Phil Collins get to be in the same group as Vinnie Colaiuta? Vinnie played for FZ, with like 14 different time sigs per songs as well as "polyrhythems" during his solos and such.
phil collins is up there with the best of them it dont matter how many riffs hes got hes got his own unique stile drummers, bass players are the back bone and to watch them live is awsome grove on!
Phil Collins in a class with Vinnie and Bozzio etc?
That actually made me laugh a little and then I felt a little vomit creep up into my mouth. Phil Collins is a decent player but isnt qualified to carry Vinnie's stickbag.
first off anyone even bringing up Lars ulrich in a conversation about drumming skill has permanently lost their social priveleges across the board. whoever you are do us all a favor go to your room burn all your metallica cd's and raise your standards of playing cause that midget you call a drum god practices about as often as gay men wank off to jenna jameson. point made.
Hey guys, the ones commenting on the music, Vinnie Colaiuta is one of the best. He's doing a drum clinic nobody gives a f about the music...it's drumming demonstration. FYI
i agree wholly with sergei430amg. i once was a fan of those frauds (DT, Rush). but when i first saw transcriptions of the jazz/fusion pros, i took a 180 degree turn away and have never looked back since.
hahah, Never mention Lars Ulrich in the same sentence as Vinny. Take it from someone who used to be a huge fan of Lars. When you learn a little more about music, you'll see how foolish that statement really is..hahah
segalryan once you get over your ignorance to drumming you will realize that this drummer is over what Lars does this drummer you are watching can play what Lars plays all day and play jazz and sound ridiculous at all those styles now that is skill dont believe me listen to the last megadeath album Vinnie did the whole album in one take basically in his sleep cuz its a joke to him. So dont knock what you dont understand
Segalryan - this is just silly. Lars is a fine, athletic drummer - but he is not in the same league, by far, in any respect, as Vinnie. If you ask Lars, he would agree. This is a whole 'nuther level. Metallica has never touched the rhythms and all their varieties that jazz and fusion guys do in a single set or a single tune.
Some say Vinnie is all about technique. Please, don't make yourself look like a fool. Joe's Garage, Shut Up Play Yer' Guitar, please make some homework, listen, analyze.
the only thing bad about this is the shit he had playing behind him.that was horrible.somehow he made it musical.i hear alot of passion in his playing.
Rockers are simply not aware of the fact that jazz/rock musicians can play the instruments a lot better. They think Neil Peart and Mike Portnoy are at absolute edge of drumming/playing. They will not listen to any other type of music .
Im getting so sick of u guys always comparing one drummer with another ''oh he is better no hes is better'' who cares, u can get inspired from most drummers around so stop comparing..
sure, that's true, but I disagree, you can compare, differences in technical proffiency are clear, so if that's what gets someone excited about certain drummers, comparison is normal. Obviously there is no such thing as "the best" but some guys just practice more and it shows in how they express themselves on the kit. Of course some are better at certain things than others, but no one can be masterful at everything to an equal degree.
vinnie and dave weckl took fusion drums to a new level after billy cobham. Bill Bruford is the perfect drummer who has all the technique and extreme groove.
i never said that he was as good technically, I was merely stating that for me Bill Bruford is the perfect drummer with feel and technique in proportion ala steve gadd. Vinnie is all about the technique.
at a certain point in his career Colaiuta may have been overtly concerned with technique but I'd argue that he has long since transcended that prepoccupation, anyway as far back as Joe's Garage there are examples of flawless groove playing
Plus, he has provided us all with an incredible link in the historical chain. Taking what Tony Williams and Steve Gadd did, and carrying the torch beyond that. He has revolutionized the way we all play the drums.
comparing musicians is kind of pointless anyway.Music is ART. Who is better?it s so subjective. IT s all about what the artist wants to do.Vinnie could practice the stuff marco does and he would have it down, propably in a short time,, and opposite,! Vinnie likes to play music, thats why he got so good at it and he is the #1 drummer for hire.
Vinny is a drummer that can play all different kinds of music. True...and it is a subjective thing, but he couldn't have Marco's stuff down in a short time. Though Marco practiced..you still have to be born with those abilities. Well...it's a subjective like you said, so why argue. Have a good one.
Marco is a great drummer, techniquewise he is just as good as vinnie, but Marco doesn't have the musical "feeling" that vinnie has. Vinnie can play in bands and adept, while Marco is more of a clinic-guy
Wow, there must be some unbelievable drummers on this comment list if you think you can talk smack about Vinnie. The man is top 10 in history. I'm guessing about 99% of you guys couldn't roadie for this guy.
zildjian had to have filmed this; i can tell because of the shoddy filming. who wants to see a closeup of his facial expression?
this same type of filming was used with vinnie's first zildjian concert - the camerman focused in on his face during points where you wanted to see what he was playing; other times he zoomed in on the zildjian logo. very, very laughable & disappointing.
Vinny is a great drummer, but if you think this is good check out Marco Minnemann's "Extreme Drumming" DVD. This isn't that hard to play. The machine is used as a "crutch" to add sort of a dynamic meter to the playing so it sounds more difficult than it really is. Just a different version of Dave Weckl who is just as good.
Marco is a genius in his own right. Vinny is a great drummer, but he doesn't have the independence skills like Marco has. Marco has a brain for each limb. Steve Smith, Dave Weckl, Virgil Donati, and Simon Phillips are all just as good. If you get "Extreme Drumming", you will see Marco is just as good if not better than Vinny.
true,,! I have seen extreme drumming! he s great at what he does. I like vinnie more cause he is more about the music.he s the only drummer ever that has played with artists from Sting, to chick corea, to megadeth! No dvd, no books. he didnt even have a website only a year ago. It looks like he only wants to play music.
Dude trust me when i say that Vinnie has every bit of interdependence skills that marco has but he is not concerned really with the academic side of music so you rarely see it. That guy has played any and all types of drumming in his career at one point or another. Dont get me wrong Marco is great. I love the song "threesome" on his dvd, his independence in that is nuts but if you dont think Vinnie could do that... you haven't listened to enough of his drumming.
Every drummer is unique, and can do something another drummer can't. This youtube argument about who's the best, or better has gotten out of hand. Go to Daney Carey, and they will tell you why he is better than Vinnie, or Joey Jordison. It's all bullshit. You can't win. Terry Bozzio, Mark Craney, and Vinnie are my 3 favorites all for different reasons. I love all 3 for their individual, unique, and dynamic styles. In the end it's all about the art. Not who's the best.
I absolutely agree with you and i didn't mean to get all confrontational. I was just talking about Marco's skill opposed to Vinnie's but you're right all this is bullshit. In the end it's about the music.
very true..and good to hear Mark's name mentioned in the company of Vinnie and Terry. He's so overlooked for his style and groove. I have a Tull bootleg from 1980 with him and jobson. Mark's drum solo on "Uniform" was a phenomenal composition with style dynamics and technique! Probably one the best "in concert" drum solos I've ever heard...RIP mark..
Dude i have listened to tons of Vinnie and Marco stuff and i own the Extreme Drumming dvd you mentioned and i can honestly say that Vinnie can play anything Marco does on that dvd with ease. Vinnie is one of if not the best sight readers of music in the world which means he can pretty much play anything. Listen to some of Vinnie's stuff with chick corea or do a search on here for Live at the Blue Note. Marco would most likely tell you himself that he can't touch Vinnie.

The difference between Marco and Vinnie is that with Vinnie you an feel the music. Marco you need a frickin' calculator to listen to it.
Marco in my opinion is not even in the same ballpark.

Vinnie likes to play music, thats why he got so good at it and he is the #1 drummer for hire.
kallevil 5 years ago
Vinny is a drummer that can play all different kinds of music. True...and it is a subjective thing, but he couldn't have Marco's stuff down in a short time. Though Marco practiced..you still have to be born with those abilities. Well...it's a subjective like you said, so why argue. Have a good one.

Marco is a great drummer, techniquewise he is just as good as vinnie, but Marco doesn't have the musical "feeling" that vinnie has. Vinnie can play in bands and adept, while Marco is more of a clinic-guy
both great drummers though!!

Just a different version of Dave Weckl who is just as good.

jesus christ please dont compare vinnie with guys like marco. vinnie is a genius. drummers like vinnie come once in 20-30 yrs.
kallevil 5 years ago

It looks like he only wants to play music.
kallevil 5 years ago

Vinnie is the most revolutionary drummer of our time! A true genuis. Often imitated, never equalled. Long Live The King!!!

Haha, he's playing a "piano black" 6 piece Yamaha (RC9000?) kit. I wonder who he copied that from....

Man, only Vinnie can out-machine a machine all the while putting an amazing feel to it. Whatever "it" might be.

This machine came out in 1984.
