  • I LOVE KEANU REEVES !!!! IS BEAUTIFUL!!!!

  • book is so good. film is incredible, but the book really fucked with me.

  • Just watched this film about 5 minutes ago... Seriously head mashing!

I got the jist & the finale, but it's tough going. I think most people would agree it's one that takes at least 2 watches.. Did I say it was seiously fucked up? yep well good! It's seriously fucked up by the way!

  • this movie is cool but kida confusing. maybe i need to watch it again to fully get it. i thought the whole cast was awesome, but i think i would've liked to see it live-action just because i love all the main actors and i would've liked to actally see them.

  • they make it in comic form cause it was a comic?

  • is this movie worth 2 buy

    ?

  • great movie, but it would have been better if Reeves let out at least one "Whoa"

  • What that song that starts at 1:10

  • what is the song?!

    the second one (*techno beat)

  • @darcflame37 Great song by the under the radar band M83 - Teen Angst.

  • Loved the book. Loved the film. The commentary that includes Philip K Dick's daughter is very interesting too.

I liked the way the film took itself serious without being pompous.

  • When you sit down and watch this movie you really need to pay the fuck attention then you will understand. Usually by your second time.

  • Some fucked up shit,

It's like a form of nineteen eighty four.

  • The plot of this amazing movie is what keeps you watching it again and again... it never gets OLD!!!

  • Barris: "Gentlemen, you are about to witness for approximately 61 cents of ordinary household materials, the perfect home-made silencer."

Freck: "That sure is some silencer. "

    lol

  • How can u say a film doesnt make sense? Its most likely that you dont understand it. Dont criticize the film, criticize yourself.

  • Exactly. I don't understand how anyone finds the film to be difficult to follow. And even if someone were to find it intricately made, so much that it was hard to follow, why not watch it again before making fun of it on youtube? Ridiclious.

  • I didn't quite udnerstand it; but it intruiged me and interesting.

  • it is very hard to understand but after watching it twice i understand it and it has an extremely intrcate plot

  • While watching the movie actually pieces fell into place in my mind about how intricate the plot is - I also read the book, and I missed to put some stuff in context. Best PKD adaptation ever, it gives justice to his work (unlike some other adaptations *cough*Total Recall*cough*).

  • Rated R? Lol? O-O;;

  • Keanu Reeves chooses the coolest scifi roles. I think he would have made War of the Worlds far better if it were him instead of Cruise. Cruise just didn't fit the character of rebellious "wing it" father.

  • @splatwacker Keanu sucks. Didnt you see that piece of shit the day the earth stood still? Man, the original black and white one was a real movie. You can see that the acting is just worlds apart. I have never seen an old ass movie that really caught my attention. I seen the old one and then the new one. cmon, man. What a piece of shit. I think A Scanner Darkly is some of his best work. He probably enjoyed doing it.

  • @joejohanssen I did see it, I though he acted fine considering he represented a rather cynical alien, but there were things I didn't like about that movie. You should watch the old Time machine, and Journey to the center of the earth, if you haven't seen them.

  • what's the song at 1:10 up to 1:32 ?

  • "Teen Angst" by a band called M83

  • "I could be mur. dered." :D

  • soon police will control us all!

A police stat it will be!

  • This movie was Deep.

The war on drugs is irrelevant. Look back ten years ago and compare the stats of today. Really no Difference.

  • I don't get this film at all

  • Oh, this is great, i have to see this movie.

Im a huge fan of Dick. A Scanner Darkly is one of the best books i've ever read.

  • one of my most favourate movies

  • A movie about BIG GOVERNMENT in my opinion. Hence the Big Brother-like environment, the fascist police state, and the War on Drugs on steroids. The War on Drugs is a tool by the government. They bring in the majority of the dope and make sure it's everywhere so they can arrest more Americans. It's no wonder why the U.S. leads the world by a landslide in prisoners. China isn't even close. This planned economic collapse is forcing us through the gates of an eerily similar world in some ways.

  • "Power to the people down with big brother."

  • everything is not gonna be ok

  • I love Philip Dick. He`s strange, sometimes weird but he`s genius of science-fiction. I so have to watch this. All of the favourite actors and my favourite Dick`s book!

  • Que paranoia de pelicula no? xDD

  • i gotta see this movie.

  • what is this movie about i dont get it i saw a little bit of it but i dont get it!!

  • It's a story about people who were punished entirely too much for what they did.

  • You ripped that off from the ending credits.

  • it's about the comic-tragedy of life.

  • I'd like to see this film in plain live action. see how different it would be. animated vs live action with cgi. I wonder how it would go.

  • Yea how would they do the scramble suit in live action?

    I'd like to see that

  • this movie is awesome, i love it, but one thing i don't understand, i've seen the movie twice and still don't get when he has sex with that girl and then after the sex he see's her as donna and then it goes back to looking like the other girl and then he see's the change on the camera and hologram, is it donna wearing some kind of scramble type suite or is he hulicinating? If some one could clue me in that would be great thanks.

  • hallucinating. the scramble suits are like a full body jumpsuit. can't have sex in it.

  • i thought so but in one scene, i think it maybe where he's watching the footage of them having sex, bob is seen taking some sub-D caps through the suite so could that lead to the conclusion things can pass through parts or areas of a scramble suite and if she were wearing a scramble suite it would be a different kind than to what he wears due to it's not 'scrambling' its just masking her identity. So would this lead to the assumption that there would certain areas things can pass through thesuit

  • In certain scene you can clearly see the surface of the suit. the suit is easy detected even if the image projected is one instead of multiply images

  • They filmed it, then projected the film onto a piece of frosted glass and traced each frame, then they cartooned up the tracings and used them for an animation.

Sounds like a bit of a fucking mission to me.

Couldn't they just apply an effect to each frame in paint shop pro?? would've saved millions.

  • they didnt you paintshop pro or photoshop because they believe it wouldnt give the same ginuine effect they wanted. They way this movie was done makes it special.

  • Where the heck did you get the idea they used frosted glass? They used their own in-house software called Rotoshop.

  • Rotoshop is a piece of software for interpolated rotoscoping. Rotoscoping is the process of hand-tracing the animation using the glass. The interpolation fills in some of the frames, saving the animators the trouble of tracing every single frame.

  • i heard that every minute of this film was created in 500 hours of work

  • i fucken love that movie. i hope another philip k dick books gets this kind of treatment. total recall was another but bad.

  • didnt they draw every individual animation?

  • This Movie is Awesome it had such a cool cast and such a cool animation.

Robert Downey and Woody Harrelson were hilarious.

  • I like watching that chubby drug addict, the animation is awesome

  • It is a fantastic movie!!! I could watch it all day!!!

  • They made this movie on 12 mac pro 8 core computers I seen how they made it on dvd

  • So how did they do this, they shot it on a panasonic dvx100b and then added the cartoonish/comic book effect to it in post? If anyone knows what program does this please tell me.

  • It was added in post production in Rotoshop. I'm warning you though, it took them 15 months to get it to this standard, its probably a difficult program.

  • Right, the rotoscope program makes it a lot easier with some really convenient features, but it still takes a heck of a lot o time.

  • They actually used a process that is taking me quite awhile to recreate in a picture form. It's known as interpolated rotoscope. This process takes forever because what it is basically doing is taking each film frame and rebuilding it with layers of solid color. This process takes for ever for just one picture on photoshop, think about the same process for film...

  • They dont take all frames, just enough. The program calculates the animations in between keyframes, kinda like tweening in flash. Also, I'm guessing it could be partly filter assisted.

  • this movie is about the NEW WROLD ORDER. it must be STOPPED

  • Why?

  • pretty sure phil is too messed up from drugs to have any coherent thought on the matter

  • I think it's more, or less, about the war on drugs... I think you're seeing the big picture a little too big.

  • I'd like to see you try.

  • filmed in 23 days, animated in 18 months. Why not keep the original?

  • The animation seemed a little nauseating for my liking, without the animation I would've been fine, why not just simply focus on the script rather than fancy effects? Then again the animation is what contributes to differentiating from other "mature" films out there..

  • For me, the animation added to the sci-fi effect. I don't think it would've been the same without it.

  • GOD DAMN i love this movie.

  • Had to see this movie twice to really like it, but it's great. I know it's rotoscoping but it kind of looks like the watercolor effect on Windows Movie Maker, great effect...

  • I loved this movie. acting was totally off the wall and great and the rotoscoping technique captured it brilliantly, unlike motion capture and CG, which loses so much of the character and human-ness of the acting. However, it did work better for Waking Life, mainly because every scene was drawn by a different person, giving each scene a different look and feel. In this one, they didn't take advantage of it so well.

  • I liked Darkly better than Waking Life, simply because it was more plot than philosophical dialogue, know what I mean?

  • fair enough. i just meant that the visuals were better in WL.

  • I agree with that much, the art added a story of its own. Don't watch it at 5 in the morning, you just feel like you're doing acid.

  • wasnt quite animation, its called rotoscoping. You take each frame of the live action film and trace over it, and merge similar colors in the real film into bigger pools of color. Its very expensive to do to a lot of film, and it looks great :)

  • very nice movie but doesnt tops waking live

  • All around great movie, from the acting to the visuals. In my top ten of best movies of all time.

Anyone know what happened to Radiohead doing the music for the movie?

  • wow what a coincidence i also saw this yesterday and a few hours ago,i like it that they got Robert Downy Jr. to play Jim Baries

  • One of the most true movies ever

  • where geting close to that now.Big brother watching over you.

  • From the RV Primer, Anagram Compression constructs and application of an Alphametrical Pi Code Configuration format "A Scanner Darkly; New Path Recovery Centers" cyphers to: "GRANTS PASS HIV-14 HEAD GELD LAB, NEVER DECENT, & NECK RAY RAN CODE PLAN WAS NY TERROR FUSE".

  • what?

  • Yeah its out on DVD.

    Fantastic movie.

  • it came out in summer 2006

  • when did this movie come out?

i saw the trailer a while ack but never heard when it came out

  • this movie portrays how the U.S. will be seven years from now, NWO is coming my friends

  • time to grab my aluminum hat eh?...dont forget to respond to me telling me I need to "wake up" and "stop being a sheep"

  • HEY!

    wake up you fucking sheep

    lol

but ah, in all seriousness, nwo IS coming

  • No, it portrays a personal account of the world as told by philip k. dick, who had several friends arrested by the FBI for drug use, and had his house broken into.

  • what is this movie about?

  • drugs

  • Well, kinda... Actually it's a social critic movie and one of those who stick you with your nose into the piece of crap instead of just making a few remarks here and there. The drugs are more of an excuse to be able to do that without you (the viewer) getting mad about that.

  • Hehehe, obvisiouly havent read the book, fuckstain.

  • hey u dikheds scanner darkly isnt just made to not hear their voices..have u seen the fuking trailor

  • this was a weird movie. but i liked it.

  • ciaooooooo

  • What two songs are on this trailer? The first one preferably. Does anyone know?

  • Sorry I can't tell you the first song but the second is 'Teen Angst' by M83.

  • jo3ash is right drugs are good to those who can enjoy it not for dead beats

  • Oops. I put two. :p

  • Yo, DUDEABIDES, Substance D would fuck you up worse than your mom. When you take a drug and start seeing people turn into cockroaches, you know that's a bad sign. Dumbass...

  • ur just a drug coward, some people can handle and enjoy drugs some people arwe WEAK and can't

  • Yo, DUDEABIDES, Substance D would fuck you up worse than your mom. When you take a drug and start seeing people turn into cockroaches, you know that's a bad sign. Dumbass...

  • no thats cool to me actually

  • I dont think this movie is really anti-drug or pro-drugs. theres an underlying message thats more important than that and I dont think Phillip K. Dick was opposed to drugs...

  • Yeah, phillip K. Dick was an avid user of drugs.

  • A Scanner Darkly was the only Book P.K Dick wrote without the use of drugs, but yet, P.K Dick was an avid drug user and he wrote A Scanner Darkly to confront the drug issue.

  • All u dumbasses asking to score substance d this movie is against drugs if u have any clue wtf is going on

Phillip K Dick wrote the book because back in the day alot of his friends died from drugs

Btw whats the song that plays at 1:10?

  • Play simple scrabble with the title: NECK RAYS LAND RAN. This indicates something secret and of this world...as opposed to typical PKD fare of outerspace interaction.

  • These types of secret surveillence activities are conducted from deep inside the mountains of Southern Oregon in the Rogue Valley. Massive super computers & psycho-subliminal weapons technology help the 666 beast accomplish their mememical & eugenetical objectives.

  • are you...are you serious man.

  • Yes. Get out the scrabble letters and spell out "A SCANNER DARKLY". And then think of possibility of bio-microchips smaller than a grain of rice being surrepiously placed in the neck.

  • Substance D = 2C-B-fly....... closest comparision I can think of from experiance...

  • i wish substance D was real :(

  • Drugs are bad. Go to hell. >:(

  • Drugs are bad. Go to hell.

  • Drugs are bad. Go to hell.

  • Sweet movie. But anyone notice if you goto 1:26 that the scene isnt the movie of freck walking up behind donna!? Although it is in the book, right at the start. I guess they removed it, or am I mistaken?

  • fictional drug ...

  • awesome. This movie actually made me want to read again.

  • i love this movie the ending was so good iloved the whole thing such a story

  • this was a wierd but awesome movie

  • I loved this movie vary much, all of Phillip K. Dick's stories are awesome

  • i don't like the way they created barris...he's ugly

  • It was a very good movie, only a lot of scènes with Bob Archers roommates were, not really of any real importance to the story.

  • i loved the movie... it was almost the exact opposite of those drug-movies a`la "cheech and chong"... it kind of remided me of "a requiem for a dream" which was a hell of a movie as well.

  • I want you hit you in your stupid fucking face so hard your teeth fly out your ass

You are a fucking idiot, the lowest level, below the ignorance of a kid with Down Syndrome

This movie isnt made for dipshits like you, it takes an IQ over 2 to fucking understand, so go back to cartoons bitch

  • yeah

    most people dont understand it

    they hear "substance"

    and they think

    'yeah man, drug movie!!"

    not at all

theres much below the surface of this one

  • Awesome film, I just watched it last night. Downey, Jr. was fantastic!

  • so let me get this straight. this movie isnt about watching while your stoned??? fuck i rented it just cause i thought it was sci-fi and trippy to look at. T_T

  • That's rather ignorant of you.

  • lol, ah yeah, because i didnt watch the movie then? i just watched it though, its pretty good, still looks trippy, but very annoying even watching crackheads be stupid. "give her blue flowers"

  • It's a referance to the flowers used to make substance D.

  • wow i am choking on the irony of your comment.

because the movie is about the negative impact of drugs.

or were you too high to get that.

  • ....and birds go "tweet"

  • Read the book fuckstain.

  • This movie has definitely put me off drugs.

  • You need to have experience with drugs to fully appreciate it. The paranoia and delusional lifestyle and how it can break down your ego and sense of self.

  • some you guys just dont understand good movies. this movie was fucking brilliant, i of course had to watch it again, i finally got it. crazy crazy

  • so, someone answer please

    THIS MOVIE IS ALREADY OUT?

    not, "comming soon"?

  • it's out on DVD

  • i jus watched it once so im not rly sure if i got the whole movie right

but a fukin great story and sick pictures..

    im gonna re-watch it soon

i didnt understand whats up with donna, was he the blonde or the brunette one or were they the same person ??

i think same person but not sure

  • This is the most impressing movie I have ever seen in my whole life.Maybe my brain is more experienced than others but to say that this movie´s crap shows that you have no idea of art.

  • I love this movie..so fuck all ya'll that say it sucked! I loved it b/c i can possibly realate to it. Kthnx it's about addiction..we all have it..weather it's caffine at the least or Herion at the most...so HA fuck you!

  • its also about paranoia... just saying...

  • OMG GUYZ I WAS ADDICTED LOVE ME

  • i hated this movie..... i thought it would be a good one... but it came a peice of crap

    a very BAD story....

  • Story is fucking excellent, really subtle and hard to get.

  • i loved it

  • oh yeah also has anyone noticed how this trailer makes the movie seem to be some dystopian police state story? It's not really about that.

  • they developed a program called rotoshop to draw over the scenes they filmed. the technique is called "rotoscoping"

  • Is it all made with CGI or it's just a colour filter?

  • neither, its live action then traced and colored

  • man awesome movies

  • krass...

  • Whats happened to the colours, they look all messed up

  • That's the look of the film. They made it so.

  • its called rotoscoping.

  • they took live action film and traced it and colored it to make it an animation, its called rotoscoping

  • God this movie is so depressing even though I got some laughs through some of the character's psychotic moments, such as beginning with the bugs that just wont dissapear or the attempted suicide with a transdimentional being reading the sins one guy committed, taking 1000 years just to reach 6th grade when he started masturbating. This movie just makes me want to stay away from hard drugs in fear of shit like permanent psychosis which to me is on par with brain cancer.

  • it depends on what drugs you take and how you take them..and why you take them.

  • you don't got anything right there... the film is not about drugs.. it's about our future.. a surveilance-state

  • not entirely true...Dick himself was a drug addict, and if you read the dedication at the end of the film (it's a lot more detailed in the book), "this has been a novel about some people who were punished entirely too much for what they did..." It's as much about the battle against drug addiction as it is about a surveillance-state.

  • its not about that either.

its not clear about what it is, but not a blunt topic like drugs or police stating.

  • what the author (i read up on his goal of the movie and novel) was shooting for was about drugs and the events that he endured and the paranoia that i brought about from drugs.

  • What's the song that starts at 1:09?

  • Sorry found it.

  • i love this movie

  • yes,nice
