I had heard of player pianos... those that don't require a pianist to actually play the piano... Now I see they have come out with a player mandolin. It played the last few bars of the reel for you Dan, that is so cool... where can I get one of those?
Somehow the A/V sync got lost when youtube convered from the camera format I used :-) I have another recording of the same set uploaded that doesn't suffer from the same issue though!
awesome video sir. Was wondering if you had any advice for someone looking to learn more celtic standards on mandolin and guitar. I know how to play the insturnments, i just wanted to know of maybe some good songs or tab sites. i would greatly appreciate it.
if you search on "ABC music" you'll find many good libraries of tunes. The best way to learn is to find a good session to listen in on, and listen to as many recordings as you can. It's mostly "aural", learned by ear, and nothing can really beat a good teacher or session!
@sonofsatchmo : Not these two.. Someone told me "Maids of Castlebar" for the first.. even though I've heard "Johnny Doherty's" as an alternate for the first.. JD was a great Donegal player, and many tunes bear his name if folks can't remember the title.. Second is "The Wise Maid"
ilikefluffycow: a quick up/down/up or down/up/down. Some of them are done with a normal down/up picking rhythm and a hammer-down or pull-off in the middle.
After the first 3-4 years of doing them they become fairly automatic, it's mostly muscle memory!
I am going to put my mandolin back in the case for a month!
Lovely picking! You have set a wonderful standard to work for. It is pretty amazing but those triplets are approaching the same speed as a fiddle cut -- I have pretty fast hands but I don't see how you can do it!
You can't beat the sound of those old Gibson -- lovely torch and fire inlay!
this is such a beautiful mandoline!! woow.. where do u get this one? awesome realy! i want to learn that but theres no one who could show me.. how did u learn it?
gibsons make the best in the wrld i myself have a gibson lg-1 1964 acoustic guitar gibsons are guitars that can never be surpassed =D very nice my freind
re lack of "synchronisation" - I think it's a youtube problem as well - I find it happens on a lots of vids - the pic comes through slower than the sounds ...
lol... great playing.. I recently bought a mandolin after seeing the Song The Blacksmith... Know of any good websites where I can learn celtic music on the mandolin?
Looking good Dan! I'm most curious about your technique though. The ability to make notes come out of that mandolin even after you've stopped playing is amazing! --Jim
