As far as Japanese being better, in Car and Driver, they did a comparison test with the Lexus LS460 and the Equus here. Guess which one came in first place??? The cheaper price one prevailed in that battle.

We have to sue to get them to fix it since they claim all the engine Gunk was our fault but running a CarFax we found out that Hertz owned the car & they drove almost 27,000 miles in less than a year. They're are plenty of affluent Koreans in the US. I'm sure this car is specifically aimed in their direction. A large number of Koreans in the US drive Lexus and I'm sure Hyundai could "pick off " a few of those customers. Why not? They were building the car anyways.
I think many people are missing the point. This car was built for the domestic market(in Korea). As Skoreans become more affluent, they purchase foreign cars and pay huge tariffs to bring them in. So any intelligent SKorean would enjoy a car w/similar luxury and w/out the added taxes. Notice how the rear seats offer added amenities. This is because anyone in SK who could afford this car prolly has a driver and the owner is sitting in the back. The US market is a 2nd teir concern for Equus.
At this point I don't see why Hyundai doesn't just make it's own seperate luxary line rather then change it's image. I actually like the Genisis and Equuis but for their price tags, there's no reason why I wouldn't got for a BMW, Lexus or other luxary sedans

Remember the Toyota Avalon before Lexus existed, this is Hyundai attempting to launch a luxury line. It will happen in a few years, and people will feel better about spending the money. This car is more of a test than anything else, Hyundai wont make any money on this car, but that's not the point.

I have ridden in these and they are very luxurious,smooth,quiet and very fast. The ultimate is designed as a chaffuer car and has the 4.6 liter 385 horse tau engine and the german ZF 6-speed auto. later this year we should get the 5.0 or the 5.5 liter if you order the bulletproof package.Every where I go in Incheon korea these are at upscale hotels as limos and there is NO HYUNDAI LOGO ON THEM just EQUUS on the back and a winged hood ornament on the front USA will get a winged badge on front

Besides can people really tell whats a quality interior besides people that are well off? hell people think the plastic wood trim in my car is real wood! It's interior may not be on par with the german automakers but it get the job done. And we all know we Americans like things bigger, why would they get something smaller than it?

I personally test drove the Equus the other day, it's a beautiful car no doubt, but it's no LS600h or a S class mercedes.The Equus have great features, but the instrument panel needs some improvements. It feels cheap compared to a LS600h. However! You cannot beat the Equus price, for what Hyundai is offering.
Honda and Toyota are the TOP 2 USA selling car makers. They also have publicly stated that the biggest fear they have is HYUNDAI. This car is sweet, this jerk doesn't give it its justice. The rear seats recline & are heated & cooled. There are 17 speakers and it parks itself. LEXUS AND BENZ look out. As soon as thepicky americans get over the 'name" HYUNDAI will dominate the US market. I'd buy it over a BENZ, it's using GERMAN technology engineering on the transmission. Nice job, Nice car.

Had a chance to check out this car at Auto Show but.....seriously......who would buy this car? I mean it's good entry level luxury car with all these features but the quality of leather and wood is kinda cheap. This car should be in the same class as Genesis. Why is the Genesis so expensive in Russia, it sells for like 2,260,000 Py6 ($73,000 USD) which can get you an Infiniti M56, Range Rover or even BMW 7 series here in the US. And are you kidding me the New Equus sells for like 3,300,00 Py6 ($107,000 USD) with that money I would rather have a Maserati.

A maybach, a RR phantom has a 3840mm wheelbase... maybachs and rolls are vastly larger in the back. In both these cars, final assembly, including all body, paint, wood, and leather work, is completed to each customer's individual specification- making nearly every one custom built

@Johncarson9113 Hyundai is expensive in Russia because Russia has 30% tariff. BMW is cheap because they have manufacturing plants in russia, thus doesn't pay 30% tariff. So, it's not Hyundai that's charging more, it's Russian government. Since they plan to raise tariff for next 5 years, expect the price to rise. Hyundai just opened their plant in St. Petersburg in Russia, but I don't think they will be making Genesis there. At least other models will become cheaper.

We dont have Mercedes nor BMW manufacturing plants here in the US and the prices are still tolerable enough to buy them in the states but Russia on the other hand is an exageration. Thats sucks. The Genesis in the US is like $30,000 but in Russia its twice as much.
@Johncarson9113 I am in the U.S. too. :) I think BMW is actually assembled in South Carolina, and Mercedez-Benz is assembled in Alabama. That's how they can keep cost lower. Russia is raising tariff to make foreign car companies to assemble cars within their border, which is working. That 30% tariff increases in each step, i.e. middle mens, dealers, etc. Hyundai doesn't make money with Equus in the U.S. They are using it to improve Hyundai image, though they are thinking about separate brand now

I test drove both the is300 and 06' sonata when I bought my last car. If I would have like the Sonata more it would be in my garage. No comparison at all
@mmartin0617 And I am just curious on why sonata vs is300? Sonata is against Camry. That being said, next time, compare with Genesis V6 lambda or even V8 tau engines. These engines ran for 800,000+ miles. As far as the history goes, I can tell you that Toyota is following the footsteps of GM, while Hyundai is like Toyota 20 years ago. Lexus got recalled for engine problems, then transmission just few month ago. Not only that, their safety rating is terrible under the new rules.

Both cars have Hyundai or Toyota emblems on them, but in the places where people don't look for the emblem. As far as Japanese being better, in Car and Driver, they did a comparison test with the Lexus LS460 and the Equus here. Guess which one came in first place??? The cheaper price one prevailed in that battle.
I'm not saying that Lexus and various other Japanese cars are no good. Neither reall is German cars. But hey, it's your money!

We purchased a used 2007 Sonata from them and the engine just seized. We have to sue to get them to fix it since they claim all the engine Gunk was our fault but running a CarFax we found out that Hertz owned the car & they drove almost 27,000 miles in less than a year. They're are plenty of affluent Koreans in the US. I'm sure this car is specifically aimed in their direction. A large number of Koreans in the US drive Lexus and I'm sure Hyundai could "pick off " a few of those customers. Why not? They were building the car anyways.

I think many people are missing the point. This car was built for the domestic market(in Korea). As Skoreans become more affluent, they purchase foreign cars and pay huge tariffs to bring them in. So any intelligent SKorean would enjoy a car w/similar luxury and w/out the added taxes. Notice how the rear seats offer added amenities. This is because anyone in SK who could afford this car prolly has a driver and the owner is sitting in the back. The US market is a 2nd teir concern for Equus.

I have ridden in these and they are very luxurious,smooth,quiet and very fast. The ultimate is designed as a chaffuer car and has the 4.6 liter 385 horse tau engine and the german ZF 6-speed auto. later this year we should get the 5.0 or the 5.5 liter if you order the bulletproof package.Every where I go in Incheon korea these are at upscale hotels as limos and there is NO HYUNDAI LOGO ON THEM just EQUUS on the back and a winged hood ornament on the front USA will get a winged badge on front

2. No Carpet but clean porcelain ceramic floor.
3. Re-thought windshield wiper blade position.
4. Smaller circle or different style steering wheel.

I personally test drove the Equus the other day, it's a beautiful car no doubt, but it's no LS600h or a S class mercedes.The Equus have great features, but the instrument panel needs some improvements. @Johncarson9113 It's not stupid. It's the alternative to spending between $100,000 to $150,000 on a luxury liner like the Maybach and the Jaguar XJ, Bentley Flying Spur, Rolls Royce, etc.
I wouldn't spend more than $100,000 on a car if it was absolutely necessary, but Hyundai is making a go for affordable luxury line limousine style cars. What's stupid about that, considering Hyundai is now the American Luxury Choice of 2010?

Will have people who would not consider a Hyundai knowingly thinking the Equus is in the same tier as an S class.Even more to the point is the S class has a base price of 90k where as the Equus is loaded at 65k.
One can only imagine what hyundai could do with the additional 25k added to the Equus budget.
Its funny how even the Genisis sedan is rated higher than any benz in reliability..today.

This hyundai is out to compete with Lexus, infiniti and perhaps some german brands as well... although its tough to see why this equus would be a favorable alternative to some upscale infinity offerings.

Are you a bit misinformed here? Because it appears you are. Hyundai has a much larger wheelbase and back room than most of the cars you mention. It has the luxury equals to an entry-level Rolls Royce Mulsane.
So yes, it's in the same range as this car, do you know why? Because the stuff they put in a Maybach is equals to the stuff they put in a Bentley. You're only paying for a brand

@ArcanineKing... again you're completely wrong, the maybach has a twin turbo v12 that is handbuilt. the Equus an unproven low torque V8 ... the wheelbase of the Equus is 3,045 mm, the maybach 62S is 3928 mm. A maybach, a RR phantom has a 3840mm wheelbase... maybachs and rolls are vastly larger in the back. In both these cars, final assembly, including all body, paint, wood, and leather work, is completed to each customer's individual specification- making nearly every one custom built

THe maybach even features a photosensitive sunroof that works like the shutter of a camera! So no what you're doing is effectively comparing a fake louis vuitton suitcase to a real one. Look at the Hyundai Elantra, it's winning by far from Honda Civic and Toyota Corolla as well as the Chevy Cruze in both price, reliability, comfort, and sell value.

@Johncarson9113 Hyundai is expensive in Russia because Russia has 30% tariff. BMW is cheap because they have manufacturing plants in russia, thus doesn't pay 30% tariff. So, it's not Hyundai that's charging more, it's Russian government. Since they plan to raise tariff for next 5 years, expect the price to rise. Hyundai just opened their plant in St. Petersburg in Russia, but I don't think they will be making Genesis there. At least other models will become cheaper.

@the5threvolution Thanks for the info, very informative. I know the currency is different in every country but for god sakes too charge that much for a Hyundai is insane in Russia. We dont have Mercedes nor BMW manufacturing plants here in the US and the prices are still tolerable enough to buy them in the states but Russia on the other hand is an exageration. Thats sucks. The Genesis in the US is like $30,000 but in Russia its twice as much.

@Johncarson9113 I am in the U.S. too. :) I think BMW is actually assembled in South Carolina, and Mercedez-Benz is assembled in Alabama. That's how they can keep cost lower. Russia is raising tariff to make foreign car companies to assemble cars within their border, which is working. That 30% tariff increases in each step, i.e. middle mens, dealers, etc. Hyundai doesn't make money with Equus in the U.S. They are using it to improve Hyundai image, though they are thinking about separate brand now

@mmartin0617 And I am just curious on why sonata vs is300? Sonata is against Camry. That being said, next time, compare with Genesis V6 lambda or even V8 tau engines. These engines ran for 800,000+ miles. As far as the history goes, I can tell you that Toyota is following the footsteps of GM, while Hyundai is like Toyota 20 years ago. Lexus got recalled for engine problems, then transmission just few month ago. Not only that, their safety rating is terrible under the new rules.

Both cars have Hyundai or Toyota emblems on them, but in the places where people don't look for the emblem. If you really understood the topic, you would have understood that we were really saying "why are they not in front and back of the car where they usually are?" So, learn to analyze the statements before criticizing others.

Instead of Lexus, I am gonna look at Lincoln or BMW, or maybe even this car after Christmas. I don't need a Japanese car when a Japanese kid is being insane and insulting us Americans.
